TONIGHT: Dueling Caesars In More Ways Than One

ACT OUT OPENING:

Beware the Ides of March indeed!   (That was March 15th, for those of you wondering...  an infamous line from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and thought to be his assassination date.   In lucky 2013, Chi-town has not one but TWO productions of Julius Caesar currently playing.   Babes With Blades dueling Julius was in previews and Chicago Shakespeare's version was well into their run for the Ides of March.

ChiIL Live Shows will be there for opening night tonight, and we can't wait.    They're one of our local favorites for sure.   I've been a sucker for stage combat since I took college level classes in fencing, and stage fighting as part of my theatre/pr/marketing degree at Miami of Ohio.

As far as this Julius goes, Babes With Blades is doing an all female version...fair play turnabout for all the years Shakespearian women were played by men!   We've been impressed for years by their creative staging, and adept casts.   We'll have a full review up shortly.

BWBTC's All-Female-Cast Production of
"Julius Caesar"

Babes With Blades Theatre Company reprises our popular all female-cast format to present Shakespeare's tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal.  As classical simplicity meets modern ambiguity -  when the honorable path is clouded by conspiracy - how do you choose where to stand?

3/9 - 4/20/13
Raven Theatre
6157 N. Clark St., Chicago
(Lot parking / easy street parking)

Opening M 3/18, 8:00

The performance on Thursday, March 21 will be a Theatre Thursday event, held in collaboration with The League of Chicago Theatres. Patrons are invited to come to Fritzy’s Tavern, directly across the street from Raven Theatre at 6156 N Clark, at 6:00PM for a pre-show wine tasting event. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $25, and reservations can be made online at babeswithblades.org or by calling 773-904-0391 and mentioning “Theatre Thursdays.”

Praise For Supercute!:
“The next Supremes”-- Kate Nash
"It’s, you know, supercute stuff (especially since it’s sung over a single keyboard melody), but the girls throw in some hilarious details, like during the band’s mid-song argument, their insults are: “You shop at Old Navy / You wish you were indie.”-- Stereogum
"Quickly winning fans the world over with their sweet, low-fi, feminist brand of bubblegum pop" -- Portable TV
"Hook-rich folk pop"--Village Voice
"[Rachel] is a powerhouse personality, with tons of creative talent and drive – think Wednesday Addams’ precocious smarts mixed with Rainbow Bright’s kaleidoscopic color sense and the 1970s earthy vibe of one of her idols, Joni Mitchell."-- Style Like U

Meet New York City’s fastest-rising-all-girl-indie-bubblegum-group --- SUPERCUTE!

Rachel Trachtenburg (of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players) founded SUPERCUTE! in 2009 with friend Julia Cumming. Trachtenburg, veteran of the indie rock scene at 19, has been playing drums in her family band since she was six years old. Ever since she was a kid, she had dreams of creating her own girl group when she got older. This dream came true in 2009; SUPERCUTE! supported UK artist Kate Nash on a U.S tour, followed by a 11 country European tour in 2010, wowing audiences with what the New York Times calls “incisive, tidy, clever bubblegum pop.”

SUPERCUTE! writes and performs amazingly witty, catchy and refreshing songs on such subjects as animal rights (“The Pigeon Song”), and their joy for sweets (“Candy City” and “Dumb Dumbs”). They also have a knack for brilliantly re-framing ‘70s rock classics such as Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” and Led Zeppelin’s “Misty Mountain Hop”. Their video for “Not To Write About Boys” has been spotlighted by well-known websites Stereogum and Boing Boing. The girls of SUPERCUTE! raised their own money via KickStarter to record their first full length album produced by Kate Nash in London. The album showcases the dreamy, psychedelic, dark direction that their sound has evolved into, incorporating complex instrumentation and harmonies that have become one of the group’s signatures. The combination of SUPERCUTE!’s underground attitude and Nash’s pop intellect created the album “DON’T PoP MY BUBBLE’’ to be released on Secret Code Records distributed by The Frenchkiss Label Group.

Since SUPERCUTE!'s inception, the band has created quite the stir, garnering an impressive array of raves from respected media outlets like The New York Times, The New York Post, Time Out New York and The New Yorker. They’ve been blogged about by Teen Vogue, featured in a full 2-page spread in Bust, and were named Deli Magazine's "Band of the Month" for April 2010. They have played alongside artists such as Adam Green, The Shaggs, John Spencer Blues Explosion, The N’ere Dowells, Ira Glass, Janeane Garofalo, R. Stevie Moore, and Jeffrey Lewis. They have also performed at SXSW, the CMJ conference, at the 92nd Street, and at such big venues as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York’s Bowery Ballroom, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Minneapolis’s First Avenue and the Los Angeles’s El Rey Theater.

In the spring of 2013, SUPERCUTE! will tour the east coast with Kate Nash, premiering the tunes off their new album. There are plans of more touring when the album is released June 11th 2013.

TONIGHT: Nashville Pussy LIVE at Reggies #originalshowshots

Nashville Pussy LIVE at Reggies Rock Club 11-7-2011

ChiIL Live Shows will be there...will YOU?!   We've shot these guys a couple times before and they do shine LIVE.   Come on out for what's sure to be a rockin' good time with wickedly witty lyrics and sexy guitar riffs.   Then check back like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often for our photo filled recap.

Check out more of our past Nashville Pussy coverage here, including our original photo filled features from an earlier Reggies show and Chi-Town's Bottom Lounge.

Tonight:

Yeah, yeah I know there's potentially record setting hockey in the works for tonight--We love you Blackhawks!!   But we'll be recording the game and heading out to Reggies for some kick ass live music instead.

 NASHVILLE PUSSY
True rock n’ roll doesn’t require definition. It’s self-explanatory based on a gut feeling and the unconditional devotion to the musical genre. Nashville Pussy have celebrated their brand of genuine rock n’ roll for more than a decade, in classic style at times, surprising at others, but always earthy, raw and unadulterated. Band mastermind Blaine Cartwright (vocals, guitar), his wife Ruyter Suys (guitar), Karen Cuda (bass) and Jeremy Thompson (drums) poured their heart and soul into the latest rock release, entitled From Hell To Texas, which saw the band hone their most impressive recording to date alongside the non stop touring, from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Japan, and almost a year straight with the Reverend Horton Heat, “We allowed ourselves this time to give the songs the chance to turn out as perfect as possible,” Cartwright explains. “We kept playing the new tracks at our rehearsal room until they really clicked. I feel they’re heavier and grittier than previous releases. The whole creative process took three long years, but the result has been worth the trouble.”
Their songs are mostly about fun and good times, but occasionally – as in the case of ‘Late Great USA’ – they also stick the finger into an open wound. “Although Blaine’s comical and satyrical themes mostly prevail on From Hell To Texas, there are two or three numbers which deal with more serious subjects. ‘Late Great USA’ is a political song, we simply had to vent our anger at certain grievances in this country.”

Rescheduled (All Tickets for 10/31 Will Be Honored)

  • Doors: 7PM / Show: 8PM-10PM
  • All Ages

We've been promoting Emilie Autumn's Metro appearance for months, before and after her Halloween show was postponed.   But today is finally the day!  Click here for some of our past coverage.

World-class violinist. Fashion icon. Famously bipolar. The list goes on, but one thing is certain: We're talking about Emilie Autumn. With world tours, glossy magazine covers, and guest spots on the albums of such artists as Courtney Love (with whom she performed on Leno and Letterman), Otep, Billy Corgan, and TV's 'Metalocalypse' under her corset strings, Emilie Autumn's devilishly dark lyrics, metal-shredding violin solos,

pink-glittered pasties, and industrial-strength voice reinvent "gothic" for the masses, and goths have never had so much fun.

More akin to a Broadway musical than a standard rock performance, the Los Angeles-born starlet's highly theatrical stage show is a sexy circus of glam-rock burlesque, backed by a scantily-clad girl band known to EA's devoted fans as the Bloody Crumpets.

Featuring EA's signature electric violin pyrotechnics, heartbreakingly lush orchestrations, hard-core beats, and menacing lyrics growled with enough intensity to make your hair stand on end, the resulting noise is a harpsichord-heavy romp through Victorian asylums where screaming is allowed and girls always get revenge.
