OPENING: World Premiere of Detour Guide Via Silk Road Rising Co-Produced with Stage Left Theatre March 11–April 7, 2019

ChiIL Live Shows on our radar

March 11–April 7, 2019
Detour Guide
The World Premiere
Co-Produced with Stage Left Theatre
Written and Performed by Karim Nagi
Directed by Anna C. Bahow

** RUN TIME: The performance is approximately 90 minutes
with no intermission**

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, we're eager to catch Detour Guide. I'll be out to review on the 16th, so check back soon. In the meantime, grab your tickets to experience Silk Road Rising's latest. In Detour Guide, Karim guides his audience with music, dance, costumes, and language, and he teaches them about the Arab World and Arab America. Come to listen, laugh, and learn.

We go to the theatre to learn about each other. As Karim Nagi says, “I believe familiarity helps people appreciate one another.”

The star of Detour Guide is an Egyptian-born drummer, DJ, composer, and folk dancer. Over the course of his career, Karim has released CDs of this unique brand of Arab House/Electronica, has become well versed in the ultra-traditional styles of Arab music, has promoted the study of Arab dance in the United States, and more. But Karim is also a teacher.

When Karim Nagi plays the drums, it’s to the beat of both the bustling avenues of American metropolises and the busy streets of Cairo.

When he dances, he moves across space and genre, blending traditions and styles.

When he sings, he does so from the heart, allowing his voice to glide along the waves of emotions, and memories of contradictions, frustrations, and optimisms that come out of his immigrant experience.

Detour Guide is Karim’s musical that takes us on an alternative tour of the Arab World and Arab America. Using lyrics, percussion and an urban soundscape, master storyteller and musician Karim Nagi guides us through a social and political labyrinth, extolling the virtues of revolution, immigration, and hummus along the way.

Who is Karim Nagi?

He is a musician. He is a drummer. He is a DJ. He is a folk dancer. He is a storyteller.

As an artist, he weaves together his many talents to create a unique and captivating experience for his audience.

Karim Nagi is your guide for the world premiere of Detour Guide.

“In Detour Guide, I’m imitating the Arabic rawi storytelling style which relies on hyperbole and exaggeration, rhyme and word play,” says Karim.

For this co-production between Silk Road Rising and Stage Left Theatre Company, Karim pulls from different instrumental voices, world experiences, and the rich cultural traditions of the Arab World and Arab America to assemble a journey, an alternative guide, through some of the most pervasive social and political issues of our time.

“My agenda is to demonstrate the depth of Arab art as exemplified in music and dance. My presentations are highly participatory and entertaining. Arab culture, through the universal language of music, becomes demystified and humanized. The beauty and authenticity of Arabic music and dance serve as a convincing demonstration of the simultaneous exoticism and familiarity of this ancient culture.”

OPENING: The World Premiere of Through the Elevated Line at Silk Road Rising Through April 15, 2018

Silk Road Rising Presents
Through the Elevated Line
The World Premiere
Written by Novid Parsi
Directed by Carin Silkaitis

March 7th - April 15th, 2018

Silk Road Rising (Chief Programming Officer Jamil Khoury and Executive Director Malik Gillani) is proud to announce the World Premiere of Through the Elevated Line, written by Novid Parsi and directed by Carin Silkaitis. The production will run from March 7th to April 15th, 2018 at Silk Road Rising located at 77 W. Washington St., Lower Level, Chicago, IL, 60602.

I'll be out for the press opening on March 17th, so check back soon for my full review.

Synopsis

Having fled Iran where he was imprisoned for being a gay man, a damaged Razi arrives at his sister’s doorstep in Chicago only to disrupt the life she and her American husband built together. As the Chicago Cubs vie to make history, rivalries of a different kind simmer in the Uptown two-flat that Razi tries to call home. With echoes of A Streetcar Named Desire, Novid Parsi’s world premiere drama probes the boundaries between family, loss, prejudice, and desire.

Artistic Statements
“With Through the Elevated Line, I wanted to complicate our easy distinction between good and bad immigrants by exploring two immigrant siblings not as types, but as individuals. Razi Gol, like Blanche DuBois, is an unwanted traveller: caught between two worlds, accepted by neither. Attitudes toward our own Blanches, our own others, have progressed … and haven’t. Through the Elevated Line looks at our idea of ourselves as inherently different from others, and above them. It considers the effects of believing ourselves not only exceptional but superior—elevated. In the end, it poses this question: Who do we count among our own?” - Playwright of Through the Elevated Line, Novid Parsi

“In the next few years, we’ll be hearing a lot about playwright Novid Parsi. He’ll be championed as an exciting new voice in the American theatre and his plays will be produced nationally. He’ll be in the company of playwrights being lauded for bringing new energy and new consciousness to theatrical storytelling. And I say this knowing just two of Novid’s plays, both profound in how they negotiate vulnerability and courage: Our Mother’s Meal and Through the Elevated Line.

Whether or not I’m a reliable prognosticator, only time will tell. But I believe my predictions are more than just wishful thinking. On American stages, the complicated, the questioning, and the curious, are enjoying newfound currency. Novid Parsi, with his impressive capacity to create characters that are charming, prickly, compromised, and resilient, understands that one can be challenged by adversity without being defined by adversity.” - Chief Programming Officer and Mission Trustee, Jamil Khoury

OPENING: Wild Boar Via Silk Road Rising 11/9-12/17/17

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

Silk Road Rising Presents
Wild Boar
The U.S. Premiere
Written by Candace Chong
Translated by Joanna C. Lee and Ken Smith
Adapted by David Henry Hwang
Directed by Helen Young

November 9th - December 17th, 2017

Silk Road Rising (Chief Programming Officer and Mission Trustee, Jamil Khoury and Founding Executive Director, Malik Gillani) is proud to announce the U.S. Premiere of Wild Boar, written by Candace Chong, translated from Chinese to English by Joanna C. Lee and Ken Smith, adapted by Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang, and directed by Helen Young.  The production will run November 9th to December 17th, 2017 at Silk Road Rising located at 77 W. Washington St., Lower Level, Chicago, IL, 60602.

Synopsis

A gripping investigation of journalistic integrity, city planning, and social conscience, Wild Boar is a new play from one of Hong Kong’s most acclaimed playwrights. When a controversial professor goes missing, an editor and his student band together to publicize the truth. Old flames spark and friendships are tested in the U.S. premiere of this turbulent thriller about media manipulation, fake news, and who gets to speak for the poor.

Artistic Statements

“We love Wild Boar not only because it’s smart, sexy, and topical, but because, in a rare combination, it exudes both confidence and self-doubt simultaneously. It builds and unpacks all at once, seemingly unable to differentiate right from wrong without flip-flopping, which is part of the play’s inherent strength. At a time when journalism, governance, nation-states, and citizenship all feel in flux, Wild Boar probes those feelings with an air of mystery, flirtatiousness, and whodunit intrigue. “  - Chief Programming Officer and Mission Trustee, Jamil Khoury

“As a fable, Wild Boar is a cautionary tale. It sounds an alarm. Today, this call has crossed the oceans, traversing 12,518 kilometers to Chicago. I believe the power of art will shorten the physical distance between us. Watching the fire from the other shore, will you feel the pain less acutely? I hope not. If this fable hasn’t provided a proper warning for my own city, let its ending be a mirror for audiences elsewhere.” - Playwright of Wild Boar, Candace Chong

“In giving this play its American premiere, Silk Road Rising builds a road connecting Candace’s community with our own. In our current national moment, Wild Boar has also become an American story.”- Adapter of Wild Boar, David Henry Hwang

“We make choices to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. Some of those choices touch on self-censorship or the censorship of others. Wild Boar’s challenge is this: we must not forget to examine and reflect on those choices. We may be giving up a deeply held long-term gain for a short-term smaller good. And in the case of an ideal, once it’s given up, it takes a fight to get it back.” - Director of Wild Boar, Helen Young

Cast/Crew

The creative team for Wild Boar includes Candace Chong (Playwright), Joanna C. Lee and Ken Smith (Translators), David Henry Hwang (adapter), Helen Young (Director), Corey Pond (Production Manager), Joshua Baggett (Stage Manager), Yeaji Kim (Set/Projections Designer), Tony Churchill (Projections Designer),  Melissa Ng (Costume Designer), Lindsey Lyddan (Lighting Designer), Thomas Dixon (Sound Design and Original Music), Katy Vest (Props Master), Jason Pikscher (Tech Director), Carol Ann Tan (Dramaturg), Brent Ervin-Eickhoff (Assistant Director), and Bailey Howard (Assistant Stage Manager).

The cast includes Christine Bunuan* as Tricia, F. Karmann Bajuyo as Ruan, Fin Coe as Yam, Emily Marso as Karrie, and Scott Shimizu as Johnny. Understudies include Zhanna Albertini, Harrison Hapin, Dwight Sora, Marie Tredway, Ian Michael Smith, and Marie Tredway.

* Denotes member of Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers.

About the Artists

REVIEW: Ultra American Offers Hilariously Insightful Take on Inciteful Topics

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:
Ultra American: A Patriot Act
Through September 26th

Azhar Usman's Ultra American is ultra funny, and both witty and wise. He does a stand up job poking fun at the absurdities of latent and blatant racism through his own experiences as an Indian American Muslim in 2016. This show was simultaneously enlightening and laugh out loud funny. Ultra American should be recommended if not required viewing for every American over 13. Highly recommended.

The set design is simple, but highly effective, and more set than we had expected for a 1 man stand up show. Ultra American: A Patriot Act's set has an asymmetrical aesthetic and excellent use of wall sized projections. The open and close features flocks of birds flying in hypnotic patterns, which fits with the show's ultimate take away. People are all similar birds in different cages. The external trappings of skin color, clothing, heritage, race, religion, economics, and culture matter far less than what's on the inside, where we're all more alike than different. It's powerful imagery and easy to grasp.

Usman also urges everyone to just take the simple step of holding people accountable for their own individual behaviors, beliefs and actions, not those of one's entire race, ethnic background, etc. Simple and effective attitude changes like this across society would help diminish fear and hate crimes immensely. Humor is such an effective tool, too, far beyond preaching or debate. Azhar Usman's a gifted comedian, astute observer of the absurdities of racism and our modern American society, and a true treat to see in action. Don't miss this!

Famed comedian and former lawyer Azhar Usman uses wit and knowledge to tackle some of America's most pressing issues.

Race, identity, and national politics are all fair game in Azhar's comical commentary on what it means to be an Indian American Muslim in 2016.

Ultra American: A Patriot Act runs September 5 - 26, Tuesdays thru Sundays. Tickets are $25 General Admission or $15 for Students. All performances held at Silk Road Rising (77 W. Washington St, Lower Level, Chicago, IL) Buy Tickets »

September 6th - 25th

Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has just proposed an ideological litmus test for Muslims and immigrants attempting to enter the United States. According to Trump, "those who support bigotry and hatred” and fail "to embrace a tolerant American society" should be denied visas. Famed comedian Azhar Usman skewers these ironies and more in his brutally honest, one-man show. Ultra American: A Patriot Act explores the tensions and paradoxes surrounding the double consciousness of American Muslims living in an ever-polarizing world. This three-week engagement will run Tuesdays thru Sundays.

Azhar Usman has toured the world performing stand-up and opening for a variety of stand-up comics. See what other comedians think of the man CNN calls, "America's Funniest Muslim."

"One of the most important, relevant, and hysterically funny guys out there!"
-Margaret Cho

"Azhar Usman is untouchable. He is like a comedian from the future."
-Dave Chappelle

"I think Azhar is hysterical."
-John Oliver

"Azhar Usman is funny. Also, he turned me on to halal bacon, and I thank him for that."
-Jim Gaffigan

"He's like Zach Galifianakis meets Deepak Chopra and funnier than you'd expect that combination to be."
-Russell Peters

From Artistic Director Jamil Khoury:

Yes, there's the fact that Azhar Usman is a critically-acclaimed, nationally renowned stand-up comedian and soon-to-be household name (hint: it has something to do with a television show, that's all I'll say), and yes, there's the fact that he's been crowned "America's funniest Muslim" and that he is, indeed, America's funniest Muslim, and yes, there's the fact that this lawyer turned humorist provocateur is developing his first-ever play at Silk Road Rising (a testament to his impeccable judgement), but all of that notwithstanding, the real reason you need to see Ultra American: A Patriot Act is because you've been to a lot of plays in your day, but you've never seen anything quite like this. I'm telling you, this guy is truly unique and he's super talented. He's Dave Chappelle's opening act for God's sake! He can take W.E.B Du Bois' theory of double consciousness, in all its brilliance, and make it funny AND smart. And if you think Muslims are scary, well—okay, in Azhar's case you just may have yourself a point. But I'm talking edgy, no apologies, in-your-face, raise-the-roof scary. Hell, ISIS tried to recruit this guy. Fortunately, we got him instead.

Look, it's not easy being Muslim in America. My husband's Muslim. I know the struggle well. And our pal Azhar manages to mine the complexity and irony and insanity from that rocky road he travels. He not only invites us into his journey, he makes us part of his journey, and in the end, well, maybe we should all walk a mile in another person's shoes.

In other words, you need to see Ultra American. Seriously. This guy looks like Taliban #3 straight out of central casting. By his own admission, he's the guy you don't want to board a plane with. I'd even argue that the future of Western Civilization depends on your seeing this show. So come on. You've got three weeks (September 6-25). We're performing Tuesdays thru Sundays. As busy as you may be, surely you have 90 minutes to spare for the United States of America, right?
