OPENING: World Premiere of Detour Guide Via Silk Road Rising Co-Produced with Stage Left Theatre March 11–April 7, 2019

ChiIL Live Shows on our radar

March 11–April 7, 2019
Detour Guide
The World Premiere
Co-Produced with Stage Left Theatre
Written and Performed by Karim Nagi
Directed by Anna C. Bahow

** RUN TIME: The performance is approximately 90 minutes
with no intermission**

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, we're eager to catch Detour Guide. I'll be out to review on the 16th, so check back soon. In the meantime, grab your tickets to experience Silk Road Rising's latest. In Detour Guide, Karim guides his audience with music, dance, costumes, and language, and he teaches them about the Arab World and Arab America. Come to listen, laugh, and learn.

We go to the theatre to learn about each other. As Karim Nagi says, “I believe familiarity helps people appreciate one another.”

The star of Detour Guide is an Egyptian-born drummer, DJ, composer, and folk dancer. Over the course of his career, Karim has released CDs of this unique brand of Arab House/Electronica, has become well versed in the ultra-traditional styles of Arab music, has promoted the study of Arab dance in the United States, and more. But Karim is also a teacher.

When Karim Nagi plays the drums, it’s to the beat of both the bustling avenues of American metropolises and the busy streets of Cairo.

When he dances, he moves across space and genre, blending traditions and styles.

When he sings, he does so from the heart, allowing his voice to glide along the waves of emotions, and memories of contradictions, frustrations, and optimisms that come out of his immigrant experience.

Detour Guide is Karim’s musical that takes us on an alternative tour of the Arab World and Arab America. Using lyrics, percussion and an urban soundscape, master storyteller and musician Karim Nagi guides us through a social and political labyrinth, extolling the virtues of revolution, immigration, and hummus along the way.

Who is Karim Nagi?

He is a musician. He is a drummer. He is a DJ. He is a folk dancer. He is a storyteller.

As an artist, he weaves together his many talents to create a unique and captivating experience for his audience.

Karim Nagi is your guide for the world premiere of Detour Guide.

“In Detour Guide, I’m imitating the Arabic rawi storytelling style which relies on hyperbole and exaggeration, rhyme and word play,” says Karim.

For this co-production between Silk Road Rising and Stage Left Theatre Company, Karim pulls from different instrumental voices, world experiences, and the rich cultural traditions of the Arab World and Arab America to assemble a journey, an alternative guide, through some of the most pervasive social and political issues of our time.

“My agenda is to demonstrate the depth of Arab art as exemplified in music and dance. My presentations are highly participatory and entertaining. Arab culture, through the universal language of music, becomes demystified and humanized. The beauty and authenticity of Arabic music and dance serve as a convincing demonstration of the simultaneous exoticism and familiarity of this ancient culture.”

Lolla Bands on Our Radar: GRiZ Sax Playin' DJ #lolla

Check out GRiZ Saturday at Lollapalooza. Just off a tour with Bassnectar, 23-year-old Grant is an adorable music nerd. He plays the saxophone during his set for a funky vibe unlike any other DJ.

Grant's chill, upbeat presence and sophisticated music style has won him tons of admirers.  Jason from True Blood fanboy'd him during Kanye at Gov Ball, and Edward Sharpe (GRiZ's favorite singer) also paid his respects.

He's got a new full-length album due out in fall,  and lots of exciting things coming up!

HELP OUT: AVICII, Grammys, and Planet Wide Collaboration

AVICII COLLABORATES WITH ENTIRE PLANET FOR NEXT SINGLE

”AVICII X YOU” LAUNCHES TODAY – 2X GRAMMY NOMINATED DJ/PRODUCER INVITES MUSICAL CONTRIBUTIONS FROM FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD

Superstar DJ and producer Avicii, aka Tim Bergling, today announces ‘Avicii x You’ – a collaborative project urging fans and producers from all corners of the world to create and submit the beats and sounds that will turn into his next hit track.

The collaboration project will be run in five stages and last for six weeks. Each week, artists will be able to join the collaboration by creating and uploading samples based on specific themes determined by Avicii.

Avicii will act as executive producer, curating sounds like the baseline, effects, melody, rhythm, and vocals. Avicii will then pick his three favorite contributions on a weekly basis and put these samples up for a public vote. Once all the sounds have been selected, Avicii will start producing the track with all the beats, which is to be premiered on February 26, 2013.

“My main ambition with this project is to create a large, worldwide music collaboration. It will be incredibly cool to create a house piece out of so many talented artists’ different ideas,” says Avicii.

“With the 'Avicii x You' project we are trying again to shift a paradigm and for it to become another ‘first’ using today's possibilities through social technology. As usual, we hope to raise awareness not only for Avicii being an amazing producer, but also for the electronic dance music scene and how song producing is not exclusive to only trained musicians. It's a world-inspiring, community-engaging and fun project," says Ash Pournouri, Avicii’s business manager and producer in his own rights.

‘Avicii x You’ is made possible by the constantly evolving digital society, where new ways of working creatively across borders are allowed to emerge. Here, creation is not done individually, but rather collaboratively – as a shared process between people from all around the globe. The partners behind the project are At Night Management, telecom technology and services provider Ericsson and Universal Music.

All royalties from everyone creatively contributing to the final track will be donated to the charity foundation House For Hunger. House For Hunger was founded in 2011 by Avicii and Ash Pournouri to fight the constantly growing hunger problem worldwide. The organization kicked off in early 2012 with a massive US Avicii tour enabling Avicii and Ash Pournouri to personally donate 1 million USD to Feeding America.

The creative process will be documented on camera, and those videos will be premiered throughout the project across VEVO. The world’s leading all-premium music video and entertainment platform will make all videos available on VEVO.com as well as its mobile and tablet apps and recently launched Xbox and Roku channels.

‘Avicii x You’ is set to be an electronic music journey to remember and aspiring participants will be able to upload their sounds and enter the collaboration by submitting their work here, until February 13th.

About Avicii
Hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as “one of the Princes of the contemporary renaissance of EDM,” Grammy-nominated Avicii – born Tim Bergling – is best known for his acclaimed live performances and for his international mega-hit ‘Levels’: The hit which conquered club charts worldwide, racked up over 50 million YouTube views, and was declared David Guetta’s “Tune of 2011” in DJ Mag. He was recently ranked as the second-most influential under-30 person in music by Forbes magazine.

Following an intense and prolific touring schedule as well as the worldwide release of his summer smash hit ‘Silhouettes,’ the Swede soared to #3 in the 2012 DJ Mag poll listing the Top 100 DJs – this, after just three years as a performing artist.

In 2012 alone, Avicii has headlined festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Lollapallooza, as well as having his first summer residency at Ushuaïa Beach Hotel in Ibiza smashing the party island to smithereens. Avicii is also one of the genre’s most sought after samplers and collaborators. His ‘Superlove’ collaboration with Lenny Kravitz, and remix of Madonna’s ‘Girls Gone Wild,’ are among the most acclaimed tracks of this year.

About At Night
At Night Management, founded by Ash Pournouri in 2009, represents a new generation of music management, and brings a fresh and innovative perspective to the music business based on the realities of the future over the traditions of the past.

At Night Management and the Ash Alliance team, with offices in Stockholm, New York, and Los Angeles, has combined a creative approach to building modern music careers with a hard-nosed, relentless business acumen required in today’s highly volatile entertainment industry. Pournouri’s penchant for creating new paradigms for success stems from an ability to force his vision into reality, and forms the basis of the company’s motto—“we don’t discover artists, we create them.” His eye for raw talent and the experience to nurture it is combined with a strategy that’s based on leveraging fame into a brand that transcends music into areas such as fashion, movies, charity and more.

At Night’s oversight of Avicii’s career is marked with a mix of new media savvy and old-school moxie, as illustrated by his eschewing commitments to any one record label, booking agent, or residency offer, while striking brand and licensing deals with Bud Light and Ralph Lauren’s “Denim & Supply” line—the first ever celebrity relationship for the venerable brand. With his oversight, Avicii has in three years rocked to the #3 spot on DJ Mag’s list of top 100 DJs in the world.

At Night has since added the dubstep duo Cazzette to their roster, creating the innovative and first-ever launch of an artist project on Spotify.
