OPENING: Dark Comedy BELOW THE BELT at Red Twist May 17 through June 16, 2019

ChiIL Live Shows on our radar

HUNDO4U PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES DARK COMEDY
BELOW THE BELT
By Richard Dresser Directed by Jon Dambacher

Redtwist Theatre announces an upcoming production of a bizarre dark comedy BELOW THE BELT, running May 17 through June 16. This Off-Broadway hit has been compared to NBC’s The Office as if written by Samuel Beckett and was named “Best American Play of 1996” by the Wall Street Journal. Since its debut it has found especially high popularity in Europe, with over 40 productions in Germany alone.

BELOW THE BELT takes place within the guts of an industrial compound sitting far off in an unknown location. Three men, a power-obsessed boss (played by David McNulty), an emotional middle manager (played by Michael Lomenick) and an eager newcomer (played by John Hundrieser) are isolated from their wives and the other unseen people occupying the factory. They must form a bond out of necessity, while battling sabotage, one-upmanship, and secret alliances among each other. But their need to compete is as strong as their need to connect. The play is about trust, betrayal, and the deep existential pettiness of people attempting to co-exist. Someone always wins and someone always retreats or loses.

Richard Dresser (Playwright) plays have been produced in New York, regional theater, and Europe. They include Rounding Third, which started in Chicago, appeared off-Broadway and has had hundreds of productions and BELOW THE BELT premiered at Actors Theatre of Louisville, moved Off-Broadway, then was made into the film “Human Error” which premiered at Sundance.

From May 17 through June 16 the performances are Thursdays at 8pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm and Sundays at 3pm. Individual tickets are $20 at the door and are available online at www.Hundo4u.com, or over the phone at (847) 906-3209.

THE THEATRE SCHOOL AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY TO HOST A READING OF THE LARAMIE PROJECT

THE THEATRE SCHOOL AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY TO HOST A READING OF THE LARAMIE PROJECT
DePaul Students Respond to Ole Miss Incident Through Performance

Bullying awareness month (October) is over, but huge (potentially lethal) societal issues like bullying should be front and center year round.   We've seen The Laramie Project & the thought provoking follow up, The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later at Red Twist Theatre   We highly recommend coming out for this free reading.   Bring your mature tweens and up. Teach tolerance.

WHO/WHAT:
The Theatre School at DePaul University will host a staged reading of THE LARAMIE PROJECT by Moisés Kaufman and The Members of the Tectonic Theater Project, directed by Theatre School adjunct faculty member Carolyn Hoerdemann. The reading will be followed by a moderated question/answer session, and breakout discussions.

As a response to a group of students heckling a production of THE LARAMIE PROJECT at Ole Miss, DePaul University students enrolled in a theatre course have organized a reading of THE LARAMIE PROJECT at The Theatre School at DePaul University, in order to promote tolerance and to show active solidarity with all students at the University of Mississippi.

Ole Miss student, Garrison Gibbons, who was a member of the cast during the reading at the University of Mississippi, will be reprising his role and joining the ensemble of DePaul University students for this reading.

Also in attendance will be Susan Burk, Laramie Project Specialist at the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Ms. Burk is also an alumna of The Theatre School at DePaul University.  She will participate as an ensemble member in the reading, and will facilitate the post-show conversation.

This event is co-sponsored by:  DePaul University's Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, LGBTQA Student Services, the Center for Intercultural Studies, and ACT OUT DePaul.  Members of the DePaul Athletic Department Captains' Council are involved as student leaders in the break-out discussions. The Theatre School at DePaul University (Dexter Zollicoffer, Diversity Advisor) is pleased to partner with these organizations and departments.

WHEN:
November 18, 2013 at 6 PM

WHERE:
The Merle and Harold Reskin Lobby at The Theatre School at DePaul University. 2350 N Racine Ave (at Fullerton), Chicago, IL 60614

PARKING & PUBLIC TRANSIT:
Please call the Box Office for more information, specific directions, and suggestions to help plan your trip.

STATEMENT OF INTENTION FROM THE STUDENTS:
"The students of DePaul University's Performance 290 course for non-majors, and our special guests, are proud to present a reading of The Laramie Project to be held at the university campus in Lincoln Park on November 18th, 2013. The recent events at Ole Miss have brought into public attention that there are many people who still suffer from discrimination for their personal identity.  A group of Ole Miss football players made derogatory and homophobic remarks to the cast of The Laramie Project being produced at the school.  As a response, we have been inspired to continue carrying the message of acceptance and unity."

ADMISSION:
Admission is free.  All are welcome to attend.

ACT OUT: Reverb at RedTwist Review #review

Red Twist strikes again with a twisted little music world masterpiece that melds genius and insanity, consensual S & M, abuse, and near homicide in an intense live theatre experience that will reverberate around your brain long after the final curtain call.  This compelling exploration of complicated family relationships and coping mechanisms is not without horror and humor.  And the multifaceted, brilliantly troubled characters ring true.  Highly recommended.   Do note this is a mature audiences show and may also be a trigger for those who are sensitive or have experienced past abuse.

ACT OUT OPENING: A Body of Water at Red Twist

A Body of Water
By Lee Blessing
Directed by Mary Reynard
Opens at Redtwist Theatre Saturday, Mar 2, at 3pm

We'll be checking out the press opening today, and we'll have a full review up shortly.   Red Twist remains one of our favorites for bold choices and high quality, frequently Jeff recommended productions.

Redtwist announces the Chicago premiere of Lee Blessing's charming, clever, frightening, witty, and mysterious drama about lost identity and rediscovering love.
Jeff Award-winner, Brian Parry, and Jan Ellen Graves reunite on the Redtwist stage as husband and wife for the first time since their acclaimed performances in Three Hotels (2007). Only this time, their characters, Moss and Avis, meet each other for the first time, everytime they wake up in the morning.

PLAY
A middle-age couple awaken every day and don't know who they are, where they are, or the why of anything. And an unfamiliar young woman uses extreme measures to reach them. Funny and charming, this is a lyrical, intriguing drama that examines the wisdom of embracing a pure moment of joy...when nothing else is certain.

Broken Glass

Company member and Jeff Award-winner, Jacqueline Grandt, plays a woman with a mysterious illness in Miller's 1995 award-winning period drama about the demons of your past that become your present nightmare.

Redtwist Production History of the Play
Redtwist (then called Actors Workshop Theatre) produced the play in 2001 at the then-Victory Gardens studio as an itinerant company, opening just days before 9/11. During that production, Michael Colucci directed and played the role of Harry Hyman. He cast Jan Ellen Graves as his wife Margaret, who later became his actual wife and producing partner. They moved into the Bryn Mawr location in 2002, and producedBroken Glass as the opening show in their first full season in 2004-05. Jan again played Margaret Hyman, and Michael directed. It was Redtwist's first show for Jacqueline Grandt and Neal Grofman (as Sylvia and Phillip Gellburg), who are reprising their roles for this production. Michael is revisiting the role of Harry Hyman, and co-directing with Jan Ellen Graves. "I'm thrilled to have Jacqueline Grandt recreating a role that very few people saw in 2004 when Redtwist was a new company," says Artistic Director, Michael Colucci. "Broken Glass will be a reunion of sorts as we are celebrating our 10th year in Edgewater." Steve Scott was originally scheduled to direct but needed to tend to health matters. Jan Ellen Graves comments, "We'd like to thank Steve Scott for laying the foundation for this production."
