Having previously announced details of their new album Dionysus, Australian duo DEAD CAN DANCE share new recording ACT II - The Mountain which premieres via Pitchfork.

The follow-up to 2012’s Anastasis and taking its lead from the myth of Dionysus, the new work consists of two acts across seven movements representing the various facets of the legend - conveyed via an array of folk instrumentation,  field recordings  and chants. Its inspiration drawn from across the world, Dead Can Dance continue to harvest an intriguing trajectory both in spiritual and creative terms.

ACT II - The Mountain is the first new recording from Dionysus and the first movement of the album’s second Act where, explains Brendan Perry; “listeners will find themselves visiting Mount Nysa. This mountain was Dionysus’ place of birth, where he was raised by the centaur Chiron, from whom he learned chants and dances together with Bacchic rites and initiations. “

Driven by Perry’s exploration of religious rites and rituals, Dionysus nevertheless sees ally-in-arms Lisa Gerrard convey the feminine aspect of Dionysus's dual nature through song in both solo and mantric choral forms and ultimately to play the role of Psychopomp, signifying Dionysus's role as an agrarian deity returning to winter’s underworld to reassume the role of guide to dead souls.

Physical pre-orders are available via Relapse.com HERE with various physical bundles including a super deluxe 2XLP boxset (limited to 100 copies), a white/gold splattered deluxe version (limited to 300 copies), various merchandise and other formats including cassette and CD. Digital downloads can be found at the AT THIS LOCATION and include an instant download of “The Screen.”

Our Raw Heart was co-produced by the band and Billy Barnett at Gung Ho Studio in Eugene, Ore., with mastering handled by Heba Kadry (The Mars Volta, Diamanda Galas, Slowdive). Decibel Magazine and Stereogum named the release as one of their most anticipated albums of 2018.

Our Raw Heart tracklist:

YOB’s most recent release, Clearing the Path to Ascend, was one of 2014’s most heralded releases, with Rolling Stone saying the music “makes perfect bedfellows of volume and beauty, pain and transcendence.” Stereogum said the four-track album offers “a universe unto itself” while Decibel said the songs were “as riveting as you could ever hope for them to be.”

NEW RELEASES: SONS OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS FATHER Announce new album Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla Out June 1st, 2018

SONS OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS FATHER

Announce new album
Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla
Out June 1st, 2018

"When Things Fall Apart"

New York City's Sons Of An Illustrious Father - comprised of Josh Aubin, Lilah Larson, and Ezra Miller - are proud to announce their brand new album, Deus Sex Machina:  Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla, which will be released on June 1st, 2018.  Following a brilliant video for the song "Extraordinary Rendition," which came out earlier this spring, the band today share another taste of the album with the song "When Things Fall Apart," which premiered today via Clash.  Click HERE to listen to it.

Sons Of An Illustrious Father were born from an inherent need to represent Otherness within personal identity, continuing the astounding lineage of punk rock icons before them who pushed the boundaries of popular culture via explorations of gender definition and sexual fluidity.  Theirs is a sound that leans back towards the outsiderdom and recklessness in music that paved the way for the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, X-Ray Spex, Bikini Kill, and so many more.

It is from this path that Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla has sprung -- a daring record stuffed to the brim with socio-political ideas and sprawling gender theory which also just happens to be their most epic, most infectious to date.  The album is a distinctively literate statement of intent, an act of resistance from the outsiders and the fighters, aimed at the cerebral cortex even as it inexorably moves your hips. It's a specific direction they have charted ever since they first emerged a few years ago, before finally coalescing into a glorious, head spinning whole on this triumphal record.

Casting a critical eye over a society rotting from the inside out - in their own words, "it's a funeral march for our world we have lost" - the music is anything but bleak and morose. Instead, it sounds enormous, weaving in sepulchral folk, punk, electronica, rock, and much more to dizzying effect. They define their undefinable sound as "genre queer," which sounds idiosyncratic to say the least, but self-analysis is not a preoccupation of this band.  And why should it be? Their obsession with the wholly immersive and visceral experience of music makes them wilfully flippant where particulars and details are concerned, and this record makes good use of their heart-and-gut-wrenching reactions to the dismal current state of affairs.  Indeed, Sons of An Illustrious Father have a miraculous way of turning the atmospheric anger, confusion, and turmoil into chest-bursting anthems meant to bring people together during disparate times.

Over the 9-song span of Deus Sex Machina:  Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla, Sons Of An Illustrious Father's particular vision is celebrated fully and without cliché. Like all the seminal oddballs and aliens that came before them, they are looking at the chaos and disorder in the world right now with resourceful, refined eyes, and they see the glorious opportunity and enormous responsibility that affords. These songs are the end result; listen on and marvel.

Sons Of An Illustrious Father will be touring America this spring; tour dates are below.

The New York Times Premieres Jon Langford's New Album Here Be Monsters - Out April 1 #FreeStreaming #AlbumStreaming #NewRelease

Here at ChiIL Live Shows & ChiIL Mama, Jon Langford has been a favorite of ours for decades! He's a musician, artist and Chicago legend with international appeal and an alt-country-punk-folk sensibility.  And now he's got a new album out!  Check out Here Be Monsters.  We're grocking the album art already and can't wait to review the new tunes.

Flavorwire Premieres Paintings by Langford Inspired by Each Song

Here Be Monsters, the new album by Jon Langford & Skull Orchard, finds the band scanning the outskirts of popular culture, its title born of medieval cartographers’ term for the dragons, sea serpents, and other mythical beasties that reside beyond the boundaries of the known universe.  Earlier today, The New York Times premiered the full album stream a week before its release date on April 1st.  Check it out HERE.

“There’s a lot of explosive stuff on the record,” Langford said.  “I don’t know if I was fashioning songs to exploit that, but I definitely wanted to make a band album.  It’s not just me strumming an acoustic guitar, sitting ‘round in my basement."  Jon continued, “It just turned into a really great band.  We existed and it seemed like a time to get everybody fully involved rather than it just being me.”

Langford plots a clear-eyed, sharp-elbowed course through such far-flung subjects as alternative hierarchies and astronomy, perpetual war for perpetual profit, the culture of detachment, middle age, fatherhood, fame, and the fleetingness of love.  Songs like “If You Hear Rumors” and the rather glorious power ballad, “Sugar On Your Tongue” are provocative and playful, with the hard-charging Skull Orchard kicking out genre-agnostic rock ‘n’ roll as rich and surprising as anything found in Langford’s far-reaching canon.  Added sonic color comes courtesy of New Orleans’ Bonerama Horns, who contribute big brass to “What Did You Do In The War?,” while Leeds’ own Barkley McKay (The Waco Brothers, The Pretty Things) adds Hammond B3 licks to the cheeky “Lil’ Ray O’ Light.”  A seething, stem-winding broadside, “Drone Operator” suggests that raining death from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles named “Reaper” and “Predator” might create a few “boundary issues” in their joystick-wielding, computer-jockey pilots.  It reaches its own frontier with “Don’t Believe,” a declaration of true faith penned and first performed by Langford’s longtime friend, musician/filmmaker/punk icon Viv Albertine.

“She’s a pal,” says Langford. “I just thought it was such a great song, it said a lot of things that really fit with my subject matter for this album.  It’s kind of like a star map of things not to believe in alongside a star map of things that are solid and tangible and real.  ‘I believe in corrugated iron’ – just fantastic.”

Best known for his work in The Mekons and the Waco Brothers, Langford has been a leading pioneer in the assimilation of folk/country music into punk rock since the genre's first evolution over 30 years ago.  Also a renowned and prolific visual artist, he will include individual artwork images specific to each track on the album, marking this release as the most complete unification of his dual creative careers.

Last week, Flavorwire premiered the full artwork along with the track "Sugar On Your Tongue."  Check it out HERE.

For the upcoming seventh annual Record Store Day on April 19, Jon will release an exclusive 7" titled Days & Nights which will feature two brand new studio tracks, "Days & Nights" along with B-Side "Here's What We Have."  Langford also recently released a FREE EP via Noisetrade that includes demo tracks from both releases and the studio version of the first single from Here Be Monsters, "Mars."

In celebration of the new releases, Langford has extended his US tour well into April and May.

NEW RELEASES: The first solo album Toujours from critically lauded artist and performer Sabina is available now! #FreeStreaming

SABINA’S SOLO DEBUT TOUJOURS RECEIVES CRITICAL ACCLAIM; OUT NOW ON
BAR/NON RECORDS

ALBUM STREAMING AT THE NEW YORK TIMES

EAST COAST TOUR DATES CONFIRMED

“Hard to imagine a better poster girl for polyglot New York pop than Sabina.”—The New York Times

“…a hip gyrating cocktail shaker of wiggy bossa nova and squally Farfisa.”—Mojo

“Glamorous”—Rolling Stone

The new music has received early critical acclaim and is streaming in its entirety at The New York Times HERE.

To celebrate the release, Sabina will embark on select tour dates on the east coast.

The first solo album Toujours from critically lauded artist and performer Sabina is available now on Bar/None Records. The new music has received early critical acclaim from The New York Times hailing, “She’s still the nonchalant, elusive, sophisticated and resolutely hedonistic figure she plays in Brazilian Girls songs… She’s charming when she shows her wry bravado…” while Boston Globe exclaims, “Sabina Sciubba is a goddess” and Consequence of Sound notes, “There’s a kind of global interplay with her vocals.”

Best known as a co-founding member of the Grammy-nominated band Brazilian Girls, the debut record rediscovers Sabina’s unique voice, anthemic songwriting, and her signature multi-lingual story-telling, albeit this time within a quite different musical setting.

Toujours was recorded, produced and arranged by Sabina as well as Brazilian Girls producer Frederik Rubens. Of the recording process, Sabina notes, “I started this project on the acoustic guitar, as an escape, in a way, from the party music I’ve been doing for some time. But after a while I felt like I had gone off too far, I was out in the woods, so I came back to the city—And the city was Paris. Frederik and I started working on a few of the songs with an electric guitar. It took a more rock, more lavish direction, still intimate, but not sleepy. It felt right.”

The new music is inspired by the rock and pop classics of the ‘60s and ‘70s but within more contemporary recording techniques. On the song “The Sun,” Sabina duets with ADANOWSKY (alias Adan Jodorowsky)—singer and filmmaker in his own right and son of Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Born in Rome to a German mother and an Italian father, Sabina lived in Italy, Germany, then France before coming to the U.S. She was in New York City for a decade before returning to Paris, where she now resides. Her own story is really what set the background for her sound.

INCOMING: Nick Waterhouse at Lincoln Hall 2/21 #FreeStreaming #NewRelease

Nick Waterhouse is one of our current top favorites here at ChiIL Live Shows.   So we're eagerly awaiting the March release of his new album, Holly.   He'll be playing Lincoln Hall on February 21st in celebration of his latest release, as part of a nationwide tour.

We had the great pleasure of catching him twice last year, and shooting stills at Lincoln Hall.   Click here to check out our prior coverage and more live Nick Waterhouse show shots.

SOPHOMORE ALBUM HOLLY SET FOR MARCH 4 RELEASE ON INNOVATIVE LEISURE

NATIONWIDE TOUR DATES CONFIRMED

“A timeless talent…”—NPR’s “World Café”

“The real deal…”—GQ

“…he’s a tightly wound, meticulous rock & roll scholar who commands up to a dozen musicians onstage beside him with the authority of a seasoned bandleader.”—LA Weekly

The video for “This Is A Game,” the lead single off Nick Waterhouse’s latest album Holly (due March 4 on Innovative Leisure), is now streaming at Esquire http://bit.ly/1e2AdQQ. The new record, which follows Waterhouse’s 2012 debut Time’s All Gone, has received early critical acclaim—Rolling Stone explains “Nick Waterhouse is a soul man, through and through,” while Paste Magazine praises the music as a “…cohesive selection of work that, presented together, tells a story.” To celebrate the release, Waterhouse will embark on a nationwide tour. See below for details.

Holly was produced by Waterhouse and Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) and includes song writing collaborations with friend Ty Segall, as well as covers of tracks by Young Holt Trio and Mose Allison among others. Of the new music, Waterhouse notes, “Thematically this record feels more like a novella, or poem with sections, or even a film, than a collection of songs. It is a work of fiction, with a protagonist, but also a floating omniscient narrator, and fragments of conversation from other characters. I was heavily influenced by my surroundings in young Los Angeles, as well as the concept of fate.”

Waterhouse grew up in Huntington Beach, CA. He established his musical sensibilities in the middle of the burgeoning Southern California psych-garage scene, while retaining his unique perspective on the spirit of American rhythm & blues and rock & roll. Waterhouse started performing as a teenager. “I found it had the same feeling I got racing motorcycles as a kid, which is a fight-or-flight feeling of things happening in ‘real time’…I felt like that was the most focusing thing about playing music versus other forms of art. You have to live with what you do in an immediate moment,” he explains.

Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar:

Chicago’s North by North will celebrate the release of their debut, double LP, Something Wicked, with a show at the Empty Bottle on Thursday, Jan. 23: http://emptybottle.com/show/3933594/.

The album streams at http://northbynorth.bandcamp.com/.

Harnessing a love of gritty, classic rock and dance music, THE IVORYS a trio of young Chicago whipper-snappers who walk the line between power pop, indie-rock and good ol' rock'n'roll. The band has played Chicago extensively and toured around the U.S. with stops at SXSW over the past two years while building a steady fan base her at home and around the country. Come witness THE IVORYS' animated, electrifying live show with your own eyeballs and remember to clean the drool off your face.

Another power-trio of sorts, Chicago's NORTH BY NORTH veer in a completely different direction, playing more angular, heavy rock that's veers in spastic-but-anthemic directions. Tonight the band is celebrating the release of their first LP, Something Wicked, which is the perfect titled for the ball of hook-laden, noisey fury they've created in all EIGHTEEN songs. Fans of fuzzy, bluesy rock'n'roll aren't gonna want to miss their set tonight - be sure and pick up a copy of the record on your way out.

Opening tonight's show and making their EB debut is AKTAR AKTAR, a Chicago four-piece who meld Brit-pop with American folk-rock on their debut LP, Mothershipman. The album was released in late 2011 and we're excited to hear what new tunes they'll have for us tonight.

Queens of the Stone Age-meets Mastodon. …a violent one, from its burly riffage to its apocalyptic lyrics.”
--REVOLVER

“Whales And Leechesthe thing just stomps from the first drum hit, but when it shifts into the brain-frying bridge two-thirds of the way through, it takes flight and soars.”
--STEREOGUM

“As brutally bacchanalian as a Viking on shore leave, it’s an infectious reminder of what Queens of the Stone Age once sounded like-and how powerfully Whales And Leeches makes the case for Red Fang’s sludgy godhood.
--ALTERNATIVE PRESS,

“While inherently heavy and sonically adventurous, at the heart of every Red Fang album there are hooks and fist-in-the-air choruses that are among the most accessible and unshakable in the underground.”
--MAGNET

Red Fang are primed for a breakout this fall with their new album, Whales and Leechesa blistering hard rock release that should translate well to the live stage.’
