Goodman Theatre announces that Tony and Grammy Award-winning performer Leslie Odom, Jr., known for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Hamilton, will headline the Goodman Theatre Centennial Gala, performing a set of favorites from his wide-ranging and critically acclaimed stage and recording career. Celebrating 100 years, the black-tie event begins with a cocktail reception, followed by the performance and an elegant three-course dinner, and concludes with dancing to the sounds of The Gentlemen of Leisure. Leslie Odom, Jr. is a multifaceted Tony and Grammy Award-winning, three-time Emmy and two-time Academy Award-nominated vocalist, songwriter, actor, and New York Times bestselling author. With a career that spans all performance genres, Odom has received recognition for his excellence and achievements in Broadway, television, film, and music. Most recently, Odom made his long-awaited return to Broadway starring in, and co-producing, the six-time Tony-nominated Broadway production of the classic American comedy Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch by the legendary Ossie Davis, which opened in September 2023 to widespread critical acclaim and earned Odom a Tony nomination for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.” In January 2024, PBS recorded the play live at the Music Box Theatre, and Great Performances: Purlie Victorious premiered on PBS stations nationally on May 24. Additionally, Odom recently starred in the highly anticipated sequel to the original iconic film The Exorcist for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures in October 2023, as well as in Rian Johnson’s 2022 Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which broke records for Netflix. In 2020, he starred as legendary singer Sam Cooke in the award-winning Amazon film adaptation of One Night in Miami…, directed by Regina King. His critically acclaimed and highly lauded portrayal of the soul icon and musical performance of original song “Speak Now” earned him multiple awards and nominations. He also starred in The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to David Chase’s award-winning HBO series The Sopranos, released in October 2021. Well known for his breakout role as ‘Aaron Burr’ in the smash hit Broadway musical Hamilton, Odom hosted “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!” on CBS in September 2021 (2022 Emmy nomination). Additional film and television credits include Apple TV+’s Central Park (2020 Emmy nomination), Hamilton on Disney+ (2021 Emmy nomination), Abbott Elementary, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Love in the Time of Corona, Harriet, and many more. Co-written with Nicolette Robinson, Odom’s first children’s book, I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know, was published by Feiwel & Friends on March 28, 2023. The book debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at #7 in its first week. Odom is a BMG recording artist and has released five full-length albums. · The Lizard Y El Sol (appears through February 2) After drawing more than 2,800 to Chicago Parks this summer, the family-friendly musical event returns to the Loop. This 60-minute play about a lizard in search of the sun is the Goodman’s second “Theater for the Very Young” production, programming developed for audiences aged 0-5 and their adult friends and family. · All The World’s A Stage: Finding Your Voice in Shakespeare (February 15; FREE) Chicagoland teens join Fat Ham director and founding Artistic Director of Definition Theatre Tyrone Phillips for an immersive exploration of what it means to perform Shakespeare and classical texts in the modern day. Participants learn how to make Shakespeare’s words their own and discover their unique voice within the story.

· Alice ACTivation Series (8-week classes offered twice a year) Lifelong learners can experience a series of curated workshop intensives at the Alice Rapoport Center for Education and Engagement. Goodman Theatre was founded by William O. Goodman and his family in honor of their son Kenneth, an important figure in Chicago’s cultural renaissance in the early 1900s. The Goodman family’s legacy lives on through the continued work and dedication of Kenneth’s family, including Albert Ivar Goodman, who with his late mother, Edith-Marie Appleton, contributed the necessary funds for the creation on the new Goodman center in 2000.

THE SECRET GARDEN 

IN MEMORY OF CHICAGO ARTIST MOLLY LECAPTAIN

 

Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre Artistic Director Fred Anzevino and Producing Director Christopher Pazdernik announced today that they will partner with Sarah Siddons Society to honor the late Molly LeCaptain and her contributions to the company and Chicago theatre community.  With the blessing of her family, the Sunday, November 24 6:00pm performance of The Secret Garden will be dedicated to LeCaptain with 50% of all tickets being donated to the Society.

“The Sarah Siddons Society is extremely grateful to Theo and Cathy and Jeff LeCaptain for selecting us as the beneficiary of the November 24th performance of The Secret Garden,” said President Martin Balogh. “The university theatre arts scholarships we fund are a very meaningful way to honor their daughter, Molly.”

Since its inception, the mission of the Society has been to fund scholarships to promising theater arts students at top Chicago area universities including; The Theater Department, Columbia College; The Theatre School at DePaul University; Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University and Northwestern University School of Communications. Additionally, they offer support through their Artistic Council. Producing Director Christopher Pazdernik is proud to have recently been asked to join the Sarah Siddons Artistic Council, dedicated to the mission of the Council being a conduit between the Society’s Board of Governors, recent scholarship recipients, and members of the Chicago area professional theater community offering mentoring, networking, and guidance.

LeCaptain passed away January 19, 2024 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on September 29, 1987 in Green Bay Wisconsin. LeCaptain charmed the Chicago arts scene and crawled into the hearts of Theo audiences in her notable performances in The Bridges of Madison County,  The Fully Monty, and Hello Again.

The Bridges of Madison County was awarded the Jeff Award for Best Musical. In 2018, she was celebrated for her work in Yank! A WWII Love Story, with a nomination for both a Non-Equity Jeff Award and a Chicago Theatre Award, for Performer in a Supporting Role - Musical /Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. In 2017, she was nominated for a Chicago Theatre Award (Best Actor in a Musical) for her work in Strangest Things! The Musical.

The Bridges of Madison County

“I had the honor of directing Molly LeCaptain in two productions here at Theo - The Full Monty and The Bridges of Madison County,” said Artistic Director Anzevino. “One of the most GLORIOUS voices to ever grace our stage. Molly was charming, talented, humble and hard working. I told her once that she should be singing to sold out crowds in her own concert show at the United Center - she was that gifted. A young beautiful soul gone too soon. We are grateful to be able to honor her memory with this extra special performance in November.”

Performances of The Secret Garden, directed by Theo Producing Director Christopher Pazdernik, take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 6:00pm November 8-December 22, 2024. There will be no performance on November 28. Single tickets are available and range from $30 to $60. Subscription packages are available featuring 3-pack options for the remaining shows this season.

Theo was founded in 1997 by Artistic Director Fred Anzevino. ABOUT THE SARAH SIDDONS SOCIETY

The Sarah Siddons Society was founded in 1952 by a small group of eminent Chicago theater-goers. Modeled after the fictional Society of the same name featured in the 1950 film “All About Eve”, the Society was named for one of England’s most prominent 18th-century tragediennes, and presented an annual award to the actress and later actors deemed most outstanding in a production based or touring in Chicago. The criteria no longer requires the awardee be featured in a production based or touring in Chicago.

Shortly after its founding, the Society also began sponsoring scholarships for promising local drama students of the Goodman School of Drama (located first at the Art Institute of Chicago and now known as The Theatre School at DePaul University) and, more recently, students of Northwestern University, Columbia College and Roosevelt University.

Recent endeavors include an annual Susan Glick Grant to the Black Ensemble Theatre’s Plays with a Purpose, a series of musical productions reaching hundreds of school children, written to teach children positive life lessons for the purpose of fostering development, self-esteem, confidence and self-respect. In past seasons, the Society supported Chicago Humanities Spring Festival—Stages, Sights and Sounds—exposing disadvantaged students to theatre going experiences.

In addition to presenting these awards and hosting its annual Gala, the Society has organized year-round events for its members, including theater outings with talks, and trips, often involving members of the local and national theater community. Officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1960, the Sarah Siddons Society is governed by an elected President and Board of Governors. monumental main-auditorium revitalization project in August

MUSIC BOX: REVIVE AT 95 

Campaign to include New Seats, Flooring & Lighting Upgrades, and More 

 The Music Box Theatre is announcing a major revitalization of its 740-seat main auditorium as part of the MUSIC BOX: REVIVE AT 95 campaign, celebrating the 95th anniversary of the venue. During this project, the main theatre will be closed from August 12 to September 5, with upgrades including new seats (with cupholders!); improved auditorium lighting; refinished carpeting and flooring; refurbishment of our original proscenium arch; and expanded ADA capabilities with T-Coil Hearing Loop System.

This closure marks the first time since 1982 that the Music Box's larger theater has been shut down for any type of upgrades. The rest of the theater, including our smaller house and garden movie screenings, will remain open as normal. "Thinking about the historical value that the Music Box has to the City of Chicago, it's incredible to me that this 95-year-old institution has lasted as long as it has and continues to inspire filmmakers and filmgoers to walk through its doors," says General Manager Ryan Oestreich. "As the guardians of the Music Box Theatre, it's up to us to ensure that its history and vibrancy are preserved into the next century."

For nearly 95 years, the Music Box Theatre has been a haven for countless passionate moviegoers, providing unique programming 365 days a year. Described in 1929 as a place of “lasting beauty and great durability,” we’re still going strong as our 100th birthday quickly approaches. The goal is to keep this venue a community institution long into the future.

Because all those memories and all that cinema have taken their toll on the space, the MUSIC BOX: REVIVE AT 95 campaign will be open to audience participation. There will be two options for the public to participate, where our dedicated audience can either "Sponsor A Seat" or "Make A Donation" and actively see their contribution payoff to these revitalizations.

1. Sponsor A Seat: Our seats have seen a lot of audiences and are ready for a well-deserved retirement. While keeping the same style as our current seats, we’ll be installing new, more comfortable seats with cup holders. These seats will last us for years to come, and sponsoring one is a chance to leave a lasting legacy at the Music Box.

You can sponsor a seat in honor of yourself, a loved one, or your business, and the name will be permanently engraved on a plate on the armrest (Seat plates are 7/8 x 2-1/2 inches). You'll also be recognized on the Music Box website. Plates can contain messages of one or two lines, up to 15 characters per line (including spaces).

We also accept payments in installments (split evenly over 6 or 12 months).

A limited number of seats are available. Seat locations are chosen randomly and do not guarantee your seat location for screenings. Plates will remain for the duration of the usable life of the new seats. Please note that contributions to MUSIC BOX: REVIVE AT 95 are not tax deductible. 

2. Make A Donation: For those opting not to sponsor a seat, you can still contribute to the revitalization of the Music Box in the donation amount that suits you. Support starts at $25, and all donors will be listed on our website. Gifts of $100 or more receive a free Music Box merch item (poster, mug, etc.).

Porchlight Music Theatre is proud to announce Chicago Sings Broadway Pop, its annual fundraising concert, Monday, March 27, 2023 at the House of Blues Chicago, 329 N Dearborn St, directed by Porchlight’s Artistic Director Michael Weber+. This concert includes live performances by Chicago music theatre’s best loved artists, the presentation of the 2023 Guy Adkins Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Music Theatre in Chicago and more. Chicago Sings Broadway Pop offers attendees two ways for patrons to participate in this unforgettable night: the “One Night Only” Experience, which includes seating on the main floor or in the boxes of the House of Blues and access to the VIP cocktail hour before the performance and the “Oh, What a Night” Experience, hosted by the Porchlight Young Professionals, which includes seating in the balconies of the venue. Since its earliest days, songs that have appeared on Broadway have crossed over to the music charts and popular songs heard on the radio have found their way to Broadway stages. ABOUT THE GUY ADKINS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ADVANCEMENT OF MUSIC THEATRE IN CHICAGO

For more than 10 years, Porchlight Music Theatre celebrates an individual who has made an exceptional and lasting contribution to the state of the art of Chicago music theatre, with the prestigious Guy Adkins Award. Guy Adkins was an award-winning Chicago actor who passed away in 2010. Among his significant stage credits were Oklahoma! Windy City and A Funny Thing Happened… at Marriott Theatre; The Taming of the Shrew at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre; Pericles, Twelfth Night, The Invention of Love and the title role in Hamlet at Court Theatre; The Time of Your Life at Steppenwolf and the world premieres of the musicals The Return of Martin Guerre and The Visit, both at The Goodman Theatre. The Chicago Sun-Timescalled Adkins, “…a smart and invariably graceful actor” and The New York Times called him “outrageously talented” for his turn at “Puck” in A Midsummer Night’s Dream' at the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey. Porchlight commemorates Adkins’ spirit and life with this annual award and celebrates the many gifts he shared with our theatre community and the world.

The company’s many honors include 178 Joseph Jefferson Award (Jeff) nominations and 49 Jeff awards, as well as 44 Black Theatre Alliance (BTA) nominations and 15 BTA awards. In 2019, Porchlight graduated to the Large Theatre tier of the Equity Jeff Awards and has been honored with seven awards in this tier to date including Best Ensemble for Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies (2019) and Best Production-Revue for Blues in the Night (2022). 

Through the global pandemic, Porchlight emerged as one of Chicago’s leaders in virtual programming, quickly launching a host of free offerings like Sondheim @ 90 Roundtables, Movie Musical Mondays, Porchlight by Request: Command Performances and WPMT: Classic Musicals from the Golden Age of Radio. Northlight Theatre’s Board of Directors proudly presents the premier fundraising event for the 2022-2023 Season “Purpose. Passion. Progress” on Thursday, October 6, 2022, 6:00pm, at the Theater on the Lake, 2401 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60614. Northlight supporters and friends will celebrate a year of entertaining theatre during a benefit evening of dinner, music, and gorgeous skyline views.

Guests will a picturesque view of Chicago’s skyline as they celebrate a year of purpose, passion, and progress - from the art on Northlight’s stage to its education and community engagement programs.

The Gala evening's master of ceremonies is Emmy Award-winning Co-Anchor for the ABC7 Weekend News Karen Jordan. 

Entertainment is by vocalist Rashada Dawan. The evening will kick off with appetizers, cocktails and music by Evanston Township High School string quartet. The event will also include a silent auction filled with a variety of unique experiences, followed by dinner, a live auction and paddle raise, lively music, and more!

Proceeds from the event will benefit Northlight Theatre’s imaginative and inclusive arts education and community engagement programs, as well as the ground-breaking Arts for Everyone Free Ticket program which breaks down the barriers to accessing theatre starting with the price of a ticket.

The New Musical Film from Hershey Felder shares the Story of What Happens when Time, Art and Love Collide and is Available for Streaming Through Sunday, Dec. 5

Porchlight Music Theatre is proud to partner with Hershey Felder Presents - Live from Florence and its second season of productions. The launch of this new season from Hershey Felder is the new musical film, “Dante and Beatrice in Florence,” premiering Sunday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. CST and available through Sunday, Dec. 5.  Tickets are $55 per household and are available for purchase at PorchlightMusicTheatre.org. Tickets are now on sale at PorchlightMusicTheatre.org and include the premiere and a week of extended “on-demand” viewing access to the world premiere film. Viewing and access for all ends Sunday, Dec. 5 at 11:59 p.m. CST. 

“Dante and Beatrice in Florence” is a love story with an original musical score by Hershey Felder inspired by one of the most famous love stories in history and set in Florence, Italy. Florence is a city of spirits and ghosts and a magical city of love.

Florence is also the city where the piano was invented, and when a modern pianist in the city encounters the ghost of the 700 year old poet of love, Dante - mystical things happen. This is the musical story of what can happen when time, art and love collide! 

The cast of “Dante and Beatrice in Florence” includes Hershey Felder, Hila Plitmann, Debi Mazar, Theo DiFlorio, Olivia Merchant, Gabriele Giaffreda, ISF Cantabile Chorus, Members of Maggio Opera Academy, Mascarade Opera Academy, I Musicisti Fiorentini, Ensemble Symphony Orchestra of Tuscany and more!
