ChiIL Live Shows will be there to review opening night.  Tickets are currently on sale for this award winning Chicago premier.   It's sure to be a stunning season opener.

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, opens its 2013-2014 season with the Chicago Premiere of 4000 Miles, the acclaimed play by Amy Herzog, directed by Northlight Artistic Associate Kimberly Senior.  The production will run at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie, from September 14-October 20, 2013.

At the end of an arduous cross-country bike trip, a rudderless 21 year-old seeks refuge in his elderly grandmother’s West Village apartment.  Though they face ideological differences, these two outsiders ultimately find their way together to build a cross-generational relationship.

4000 Miles was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist; Time Magazine's #1 Play of 2012; the winner of the Obie Award, Best New Play (2012); and received The New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award (2012).

BJ Jones comments, “Amy Herzog, one of America's most insightful and sensitive writers has given us, in 4000 Miles, a meditation on mortality and intergenerational connection. Kimberly Senior, Northlight's new Artistic Associate, directs this Pulitzer Prize nominated play with the grace and intelligence she brought to last season’s The Whipping Man. With humor and bittersweet sensibility, Amy Herzog brings two disparate generations together in an enlightening and thoughtful evening.”

The cast of 4000 Miles includes Emjoy Gavino (Amanda/Lily), Caroline Neff (Bec), Josh Salt (Leo Joseph-Connell) and Mary Ann Thebus (Vera Joseph).

The creative team includes Jack Magaw (Set Design), Rachel Laritz (Costume Design), Christine A. Binder (Lighting Design) and Christopher Kriz (Sound Design).

The Table
October 16-27
World’s Stage Upstairs Theatre
In Blind Summit Theatre’s The Table, a cantankerous puppet with a cardboard head is having an existential crisis—on a table. Blind Summit Theatre, founded by Mark Down and Nick Barnes, is reinventing puppetry for modern adult audiences and pioneering new methods of performing with puppets. Pushing the boundaries of puppetry in their own productions and in international collaborations, they have created puppetry for Anthony Minghella, Complicite, and Danny Boyle’s Olympic Opening Ceremony. Their work is inspired by Bunraku puppetry in which three puppeteers combine to operate one beautifully crafted puppet, communicating through finely detailed movement and gesture. The Table will be performed in the Upstairs Theater at Chicago Shakespeare from October 16-27th, 2013.

On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis.  The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ’n’ Roll,” who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

Featuring a treasure trove of the greatest rock ’n’ roll, gospel, R&B and country hits from these music legends, including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Ghost Riders,” and “Whole Lotta’ Shakin’ Goin’ On,” Million Dollar Quartet captures the infectious spirit, freewheeling excitement and thrilling sounds of a singular moment when four of the music industry’s most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history.

On the day of Mitch's release, he is shocked to see Roy waiting for him, unsure of his intentions. Together they travel down a desolate road stopping at the only lodging around - a fleabag motel where confrontation and tension manifest themselves through darkly comical situations. In the end, the brothers must confront both the past and present as some secrets are revealed and new ones must be kept.

Edward Carr, an ordinary man, an adoring father of four and a successful business owner, sees his world shattered by the death of his beloved wife JoJo. Through his grief, he picks through his past, piecing together the story of his life, like the wrecks of the cars he so lovingly restores. In this fiercely passionate, unflinching and concise powerhouse of a play, LaBute explores the boundaries of love, and the extent of what society accepts as opposed to what the heart desires.

Commissioned and produced by the Everyman Palace Theatre in Cork, Ireland as part of the city's Capital of Culture program, Wrecks premiered in 2005. In 2006, it received its American debut at the Public Theatre in New York, followed by an extended run. Both productions, directed by Neil LaBute, starred Ed Harris as Edward Carr.

Presented last season for its 20th Anniversary, Profiles remounts their acclaimed production for the holidays. Hellcab portrays the story of a cab driver during the longest night of his life as he transports a bizarre and mysterious array of customers through the gritty streets of Chicago. Playwright Will Kern draws from personal experience as a former cab driver to create this alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant journey. Throughout his long shift, the eclectic collection of passengers includes a trio of drug-addicts, a born-again couple, a smug lawyer, and a randy duo on their way to a motel. Set during a bitter cold Christmas Eve, Hellcab presents a rear-view image mirroring the passing parade of humanity.

First produced as a late-night show by Famous Door Theatre in 1992, the play, originally scheduled for twelve performances, ended up running for over nine years, becoming one of the longest running shows in Chicago theatre history. Hellcab, performed all over the U.S. and abroad, including Scotland, Israel, Singapore, and Ireland, won numerous awards, including a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival and later adapted for the screen by Kern in 1998.

When the Lafayettes descend upon a crumbling Arkansan plantation to liquidate their dead patriarch's estate, his three adult children collide over clutter, debt, and a contentious family history. But after a disturbing discovery surfaces among their father's possessions, the reunion takes a turn for the explosive, unleashing a series of crackling surprises and confrontations. Acclaimed director Gary Griffin (Chicago Shakespeare Theater's Sunday in the Park with George and Follies) directs a potent and exciting play about the trouble with inheritance, memory loss, and the art of repression.  Appropriate was developed and workshopped through Victory Gardens' IGNITION New Play Festival in 2012.

Appropriate was developed, in part, at Vineyard Arts Project, Ashley Melone, Founder and Artistic Director; the 2012 Sundance Institute Theatre LAB at the Sundance Resort; and Victory Gardens Theater, Chicago, Illinois, Chay Yew, Artistic Director, as part of IGNITION 2012.

The Old Man and the Old Moon creates an epic new mythology, centered on a man whose job is to collect spilled light to refill the leaking moon.  When his wife unexpectedly leaves home in pursuit of much-needed adventure, he abandons his post to follow her, throwing the world into chaos as he searches for his lost love, his fading memory and, ultimately, himself.

A blend of resonant storytelling, spirited indie-folk music and inventive puppetry creates a theatrical experience that will win audiences over with its wit, style and depth of emotion.

Writers’ Theatre is thrilled to collaborate with the young men of PigPen Theatre Co., who bring the story of The Old Man and the Old Moon to such brilliant, vibrant life that its New York production earned a coveted spot on multiple “Best of the Year” lists.

The Old Man and The Old Moon premiered in New York City, at the Gym at Judson and was produced by: Britt Lafield/BKL Productions, SoHo Playhouse, Inc., Aaron Glick, Ronnie Planalp/Deborah Taylor, and The PigPen Company.

The Midwest Premiere of
PORT AUTHORITY
By Conor McPherson
Directed by William Brown
Featuring Patrick Clear (Joe), Rob Fenton (Kevin) and John Hoogenakker (Dermot)
October 29, 2013 – February 16, 2014
Location:          Books on Vernon, 664 Vernon Avenue, Glencoe
Tickets:            $35 - $70
Box Office:       376 Park Avenue, Glencoe; 847-242-6000 or online at www.writerstheatre.org.

Featuring Patrick Clear (Joe), Rob Fenton (Kevin) and John Hoogenakker (Dermot)

Acclaimed playwright Conor McPherson (The Seafarer, Shining City, Dublin Carol) crafts a series of interconnected monologues that explore the heart and soul of three generations of Irishmen.

A young man escapes his parents’ house to share digs with two alcohol-soaked friends and a mesmerizing young woman; a middle-aged laborer lands a dream job that he’s not remotely qualified for; and a widower receives a mysterious package that touches a hidden part of his memory.

The lightly interlocking stories of these three men at three different stages of life weave together a tale that is both spirited and moving in its portrait of ordinary lives.

Directed by Writers’ Theatre favorite William Brown (The Liar, A Little Night Music, Heartbreak House), Port Authority revels in the rough lyricism of McPherson’s language and the poignancy of these stories of lost love, big dreams and the consequences of even our smallest choices.

ACT OUT EXTENDED: TO MASTER THE ART at Broadway Playhouse #BroadwayInChicago

EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND!
TWO WEEKS ADDED!
Performances through October 20
Broadway In Chicago is thrilled to announce that TO MASTER THE ART, by William Brown and Doug Frew, has been extended by popular demand  and will play an additional two weeks at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut). The six week engagement will begin Sep. 10 and run through Oct. 20, 2013.  The Chicago Commercial Collective will produce the 2010 TimeLine Theatre world premiere hit.

Six of the 10 cast members are returning from the TimeLine production: Karen Janes Woditsch and Craig Spidle return to the roles of Julia and Paul Child.  Other returning cast members include Jeannie Affelder, Ian Paul Custer, TimeLine Associate Artist Terry Hamilton and TimeLine Company Member Juliet Hart, now joined by Sam Ashdown, TimeLine Company Member Janet Ulrich Brooks, Heidi Kettenring and Brian Plocharczyck.

Commissioned by TimeLine Theatre Company, TO MASTER THE ART received its world premiere at TimeLine in 2010, receiving more than 20 rave reviews and five Jeff Award nominations, including New Work and Production.  The play recalls the adventure and romance of Julia and Paul Child’s journey of discovery to Paris during the 1950s.  From the bistro where Julia fell in love with food, to the kitchen table where she recreated everything learned during cooking class, to a room where Paul was grilled by U.S. agents about alleged Communist contact, this is the epic love story of a larger-than-life culinary icon and her remarkable husband as they struggle to find themselves as Americans abroad.

Broadway In Chicago is proud to host this great Chicago-born play as part of its ongoing hope that the Broadway Playhouse will continue to be the home to many home-grown Chicago theatre hits.

About TimeLine Theatre Company and TO MASTER THE ART
The initial idea of TO MASTER THE ART was hatched by TimeLine Company members during an artistic retreat in the summer of 2006. An official commission in 2008 with William Brown and Doug Frew culminated in a developmental workshop and in the play’s world premiere in 2010. The development of TO MASTER THE ART has been partially supported by The Dramatists Guild Fund.

TimeLine Theatre Company, named one of the nation's top 10 emerging professional theatres (American Theatre Wing, founder of the Tony Awards®, 2011), Best Theatre in Chicago (Chicago Magazine, 2011) and the nation's theater "Company of the Year" (Wall Street Journal, 2010), was founded in April 1997 with a mission to present stories inspired by history that connect with today's social and political issues. Over its first 16 seasons, TimeLine has presented 55 productions, including nine world premieres and 19 Chicago premieres, and launched the Living History Education Program, which brings the company's mission to life for students in Chicago Public Schools. Recipient of the Alford-Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence and the Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award from the Association for Strategic Planning, TimeLine has received 47 Jeff Awards, including an award for Outstanding Production nine times. TimeLine is led by Artistic Director PJ Powers, Managing Director Elizabeth K. Auman and Board President Cindy Giacchetti. Company members are Nick Bowling, Janet Ulrich Brooks, Lara Goetsch, Juliet Hart, Mildred Marie Langford, Mechelle Moe, David Parkes, PJ Powers, Maren Robinson and Benjamin Thiem. #NCMF Sets On Our Radar: Big Gigantic #originalphotos #SCAMP

ChiIL Live Shows caught a rare mash up at Summer Camp Music Fest this year...

Click here for our whole photo filled recap of that Saturday.

We got to hear Karl Denson's Tiny Universe with a guest appearance by Dominic Lalli-Saxophone/Producer from Big Gigantic!

BTW... Lalli holds a Masters Degree from the Manhattan School of Music.

I'm a HUGE fan of saxaphone.   My grandfather played and so did my little sister.  I've also seen Karl Denson a number of times over the years, so I was stoked to hear he'd be back at Summer Camp again with KDTU.   They went on my must see list early on.   It was an extra sweet sax bonus to see him rock the stage with Big Gigantic's Dominic Lalli!

Catch Big Gigantic 8:30-10pm Saturday on The Coast Stage at North Coast Music Fest.

#NCMF Bands on Our Radar: Disco Biscuits & Conspirator

Talk about Philly's Best and most people picture a mouth watering cheese steak.   But not this weekend.   Check out THESE tasty treats from Philly-- Disco Biscuits & Conspirator!

They're on tonight at North Coast Music Festival 8:30-10 on the Last Stand Stage

Then they'll be playing a sold out show at Logan Square's hottest new venue, The Concord (close in proximity to but not to be confused with the much larger Congress) Saturday.   ChiIL Live Shows will be there... will YOU?!

Didja Know...CONSPIRATOR (FEATURES MEMBERS OF DISCO BISCUITS)

They're on Sat from 3:30-4:30 at North Coast Music Festival North Stage

Conspirator features Aron Magner and Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits keyboardist and bass player) as an outlet to channel their electronic mad scientist personae. Formed in 2004 with New York DJ/producer DJ Omen, Conspirator has taken on many forms through the years. With the addition of virtuoso guitarist Chris Michetti and a rotating cast of some of the country's best drummers – Darren Shearer (the New Deal), Mike Greenfield (Lotus), KJ Sawka (Pendulum) and Adam Deitch (Break Science, Pretty Lights) – Conspirator has reached another level.   The band issued web only remixes of dance tracks from Porter Robinson and Avicii in 2012 that blew away the electronic music circuit.

According to Brownstein, the idea to do remixes happened one day when hanging out in their studio space in Philadelphia with Khadafi Dub, a rapper from Philly who has become an MC for many of the top dub-step artists in the world.  “We mentioned that we would be interested in getting stems from some of the artists whom he knows and with whom he has worked.  A few days later the stems started to roll in.   The artists included Porter Robinson, Avicii, 12th Planet and more, which enabled us to get to work straight away. When stems from "Seek Bromance,” a dance hit of mega proportions (60 million views on YouTube) come in, you jump on it and remix it immediately. “

The response to the remixes of Avicii’s “Seek Bromance” and the Porter Robinson’s track “Say My Name” were huge after being posted to the popular blog, ThisSongIsSick.com

Conspirator put out a full-length release entitled Unlocked - Live from the Georgia Theatre (release date April 10, 2012), which captures the spirit of these true genre blenders. The collection is a smorgasbord of electronic rock bliss, delving, twisting and diving effortlessly between house, dub-step, drum and bass, and electro.  Coming off of breakout performances at Ultra Music Festival and Nocturnal Festival, Conspirator has begun to catch the eye of electronic music aficionados everywhere.

Action-packed tours filled 2011 and 2012 with groundbreaking performances at venues across the U.S. and festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Nocturnal Festival, Electric Forest Festival, Starscape Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, and CounterPoint Music Festival.

With their utmost experience and mastery of the craft, Conspirator pushes into 2013 with more raw power and drive than ever, starting with the release of their new EP Unleashed on January 29 followed by a 28 city U.S. tour.

Unleashed is a crystal clear demonstration of Conspirator’s heavy, electronically produced core coupled with a skillful and melodic homage to live instrumentation. Electronic rock sensibilities are gracefully smashed into jaw dropping, dance-floor shaking dubstep rhythms to create an effortless fusion of all things deep. This high-impact collision creates an all encompassing, energetic spectacle which will no doubt be used to shock their devoted crowds from coast to coast.
