08-13-2012 Common Shiner
Brand new Acoustic album out now! Although the individual members of Common Shiner hail from different cities, in 2008 they decided to make Chicago, IL they're musical home. It's here that they've crafted their sound and came up with the notion that Pop music can be more than just a hook…it can be meaningful as well. Influenced by not only the music they listen to, but also by their friends and the wonderful community of artists they've discovered through local shows and open mics, Common Shiner is ready to bring their music and bare their souls to the world. Having recently released an acoustic album "Before They Sold Out (Part 1)" full of brand new material, Common Shiner is showing just what can be done with a song when it's stripped to its core. Their calendar is planned with playing all the shows they can in their great region of the Midwest, and later in the year recording another full-length album….this time with all their instruments.

The New Folk celebrates the release of their debut album Sea Fever with an August 2012 “Practice Space Presents:” residency at Schubas, but the story behind The New Folk began in 2005 as Singer/Songwriter Todd Kessler went in to the studio to record his debut album. That album, entitled We Are The MusicMakers, was released in 2006 and with the backing of his original band helped Kessler to make his name and music known in the local Chicago music scene. In 2007 and 2008, in the midst of touring the Midwest, Kessler teamed up with Producer Greg “G-Ball” Magers to record his next two albums, The Veronika EP and Boomerang, only garnering him more praise and recognition on the road and at home. It was while recording The Veronika EP that The New Folk began to take root with the addition of Bob Parlier on Drums, Sam Smiley on Guitar and Graham Burris on Bass. The quartet began playing out in 2008 in support of Boomerang, still under the name of Todd Kessler, but it was during the next two years and the addition of a String section (Elana Hiller and Chris Bauler), a Horn section (David Ben-Porat and Ben Bell Bern) and a second vocalist (Molly Parlier) that the band began to make waves with their signature Alt-Folk-Pop sound. 2009’s double-single release Golden Bird, along with headlining shows at Schubas, Lincoln Hall, Double Door and Millennium Park, solidified the bands place as a respected group in Chicago, and in 2010, the band began playing shows under the name Todd Kessler and the New Folk. With over two years, countless shows and a slew of new material, the band, now billed simply as The New Folk, teamed up with producer Manny Sanchez to begin work on their debut album, Sea Fever, in August of 2010. Two years and hundreds of studio hours later later, Sea Fever will be released this August under Kessler’s label Wyzguy Records.

DRAGONY Debut Album Legends Streaming In Full

Legends Available Tomorrow 14th Via Limb Music
Austrian power metallers DRAGONY will release their debut album Legends, tomorrow on Limb Music.  Today the band is giving fans a sneak peak to listen to the entire album one day before it is released.  Get a first listen HERE, courtesy of AOL Music's Full Album Listening Party Series.

What first began as a project in the idyllic alpine republic has solidified into a real band. Everyone knows that Austrians don't do things half-heartedly and it was only to be expected that the former DRAGONSLAYER PROJECT had evolved into a solid lineup by 2008. Since then the road led ever upwards for the six lads from Vienna.

Being professional enough to recognize that the band name was a bit bulky, they changed it to DRAGONY in 2011 and continued their march forward. Their excellently produced debut album comprised of melodic, symphonic power metal with traditional character which stands up well against comparisons with the productions of long-standing international acts.

So it is also no wonder that the DRAGONY musicians have become well known on the Austrian circuit. Legendscombines the entire know-how of the six lads in ten songs, which span sounds from tough heaviness to high-powered melody lines. Overall, Legends can be summed up as high quality, symphonic power metal with ass-kicking melody inserts, powerful guitars and lyrics with insight.

The work on the debut album lasted until the end of 2011, but for good reasons: They had been able to talk numerous guest musicians into contributing their skills, for example Tom Tieber of Ecliptica, Katie Joanne of Siren's Cry and naturally Ralf Scheepers of Primal Fear, all of whom give their best on the album, as do many other guest musicians from the Austrian scene. And it is exactly because of these additional performances by their guests, that the material retains a certain rock opera character. Fine-tuning the result was carried out by Mika Jussila during his wonderful mastering work in the Finnvox Studios in Helsinki.

Legends unites a powerful wall of guitars with huge choruses in songs, which are predominantly kept in mid-tempo style. The impressive, charismatic voice of Siegfried "The Dragonslayer" Samer, is hugely admirable, with its incredible volume driving every song forward. After a classical intro,DRAGONY get down to business with "Burning Skies", a bone-shaking, fast power metal number with a great rhythm, gilded by the exceptional voice of Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear). After an ass-kicking headbanger beat in the first third of "Land Of Broken Dreams", the guitar duo Andreas Poppernitsch and Daniel Stockinger continue with brilliant riffs, clearly influenced by Avantasia and Hammerfall. This is pure steel being hammered into shape! The rather epic and theatrically configured "The Longest Night" changes speed and feeling during its entire playing time, making the track extremely varied. Of course, as far as DRAGONY's overall sound goes, one finds similarities with bands such as Edguy, Kamelot, Sabaton and Stratovarius, bands with unforgettable, attainable, melodic elements, somewhere between traditional, classical heavy metal and epically configured song structures.Legends and its high quality will not disappoint any fan of those bands - this album is far too good for that!

Wizard World Favs--DC Super Pets,Tragonia, Pinups for Pitbulls, House of Darkley, Legos, Threadless, Gorilla Tango, & Kangoo

We've reviewed and given away DC Super Pets books at ChiIL Mama, and it was truly a treat to meet the author!

Check out our past coverage here and our contest winner here.

Speaking of authors and illustrators whose work we dig......do NOT miss Traegonia!    We're working up a give away for our readers and a review of both books, to run in late fall--pre-Christmas, so check back early and often.    We devoured The Sunbow Prophecy and the Ember Rune and were so excited to hear another sequel is in progress!    These mid-grade chapter books are whimsical, creative, eco-friendly and very well written.    And the sculpture creatures the books are based on are truly unique works of art.

This booth also has sweet book marks--silver sticks with magical little vials of colored stones or fairy dust.    We scooped up half a dozen for gifts for ourselves and our friends who love reading.

This is one of our all time favorite booths.    We've  publicized some of Pinups for Pitbulls Chi-Town fundraisers before.  They get bonus points for being dog friendly, punk rock, and uber creative.  Check out their punk band parody tees.    I bought the 7 Seconds one--Walk Together Rock Together and we had a good chat.    Turns out the artist and mastermind behind the catchy twists on lyrics is a good friend of Kevin Seconds.

Can you find the pit friendly versions of Minor Threat, Sex Pistols, Descendants, and more?

There are a plethora of plushies at Comic Con.    But we're suckers for creative, well made, and of course funny signage is a big plus, too.   These were one of our favs.   Show House of Darkley some love and some cash.    These are very cool, hand made, funky and fun.    Please DON'T just stand around and take a ton of pix and then leave without buying anything (this is a reoccuring problem for them at shows!!).   Support the arts.    If you take pixs it's polite to either buy something or put up a feature so other people can.

There were also LOADS of Legos ranging from full sets, hard to find, vintage collector, and more.   Our fav was what I dubbed "the Lego graveyard".   What they lack in presentation and display, they make up for in price.    Kids flocked to the mix n match....everything's $3 table.    And they played there longer than just about anywhere.

Threadless makes the most creative, limited run, artist designed tee's out there.   They also share their time and talents by running kids workshops with great non-profits like Girls Rock! Chicago and 826Chi creative writing workshops.   We adore Threadless!!

Though you have to be 18+ to see their Burlesque shows, all ages are welcome to pose with the Gorilla Gals.    Click here to check out our past coverage on Gorilla Tango here, including a run down of all the fun parodies they have running this weekend.

We're intrigued and would love to try out a pair of Kangoos.

Enjoy all Wizard World Chicago Comic Con has to offer.  If you think you've hit  everything wall to wall....check again.    Some of our favs are in yet another section to the front of the main hall.   See you out there.

Wicked Wild Wizard World Comic Con 2012 #Photo Filled Recap

ChiIL Mama's Adventures at Comic Con 2012

We had a blast at Wizard World Comic Con 2012 Thursday.   This show is massive, with something for all ages.   Steampunk costume pieces abound, and collectors and autograph hounds will have a field day.   There's also a robust "Artist's Alley" where you can see illustrators in action, and numerous authors are available for book signings.

Vintage toy and comic collectors as well as gamers can gather and geek out all weekend.

The people watching's prime!

We went last year--you can check out our 2011 photo filled recaps here and our hints about kids' day this Sunday.

Thursday, my kids were elated to find an Elope Dragon hat & Totoro backpack.   We've been searching for both for a year, after they sold out locally.   We also got some rockin' steampunk goggles, 2 blind box punk unicorn collectable characters, 2 tiny steampunk hats and a Skelanimals backpack.

There are loads of unique, hand made items.   Our fam has called all barrettes, clips and hair hoo-has "hair babies" since Sagezilla was 3 and had some wooden doll heads on bands.   So, we were amused by these actual hair babies.

Space....the final frontier.   Get in a relaxing space and ChiIL Out at Wizard World Comic Con.

Pros of going on a week day....crowds were down, so we got first pick of the merch and could move quickly or spend time getting more in depth info from the vendors.

Cons of going on a week day....crowds were down, so we didn't get as many outrageously cool costume shots as we do on Comic Con weekends.

Must See:

Chevy is everywhere!    Stop by their booth front n center--ya can't miss it.   Fill out a short form and leave with some hot shades and a chance to win some serious cool cash!!

"Skully Business"

Pricey Favorites we wish we coulda' bought but restrained ourselves:

I dig their symbol, too.   Kinda like a sweet celtic tat version of those plastic dealies that went in the center of 45's back in the day...

We're all about the UtiliKilt.   In fact we were just on their web site Wed night, drooling over the cool styles and colors.   Then there they magically were at Wizard World.   What can I say...  I dig dudes in skirts and have a soft spot for Scots.   Price range $200-$525.

You can enter on their web site to win one free, but only if you've already got one.   Sigh.   You've gotta photograph yourself in it (complete with feet) and send the shots in with a cool back story, for your chance to win one.

Xtra hot with punk boots--can I win one for taking a picture of HIM in it...including the feet?!   There's gotta be some loop hole...

h. NAOTO
Upscale Anime Punk Boutique Fashions from Japan

This kitten's got style.  Meee Yow!   I'd love to fill my closet with these dark, Japanese goth goodies.

They also have a web site right here with some sweet deals that'll make you puuuurrrrrrrr.

To the bat cave!!   Wizard World Comic Con 2012 will be gone after Sunday, so go already!   Then check back with ChiIL Mama/ChiIL Live Shows like we vote in Chi, IL....early and often.   We'll have more Top Picks and Must See Tips for Wizard World all weekend!
