Run time: 70 minutes, no intermission

When politics gives you Trump, make a musical! Here at ChiIL Live Shows we're ready for a laugh after a year of cringeworthy executive decisions by 45. Flying Elephant Productions is ready to bring it, with the world premiere of WE THE PEOPLE: The Anti-Trump Musical, to launch their first season. I'll be out for the press opening this Saturday, January 27, so check back soon for my full review.

Flying Elephant Productions is pleased to launch its inaugural season with the world premiere of WE THE PEOPLE: The Anti-Trump Musical, a political musical song cycle about the turbulent 2016 election, with six actors playing 55 characters. This powerful new musical features a book by Sean Chandler, music and lyrics by Leo Schwartz, direction by Derek Van Barham and music direction by Ty Miles. WE THE PEOPLE will play January 26 – February 10, 2018 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. WE THE PEOPLE features Dwayne Everett, Bradley Halverson, Elizabeth Rentfro, Carmen Fisher Risi, Alyssa Soto and Timothy Swaim.

The election of 2016: Disappointment, Chaos, Intrigue, Anger, Response! This new political musical song cycle takes audiences from the party conventions through election night and its immediate aftermath into the realization of “Trump’s America.” It all culminates with a call to action from “We The People.”

Comments Flying Elephant Productions Executive Director Leo Schwartz, “Often, an artist’s job is to light dark corners and elucidate a way to a new understanding of the world. We see life differently and we passionately express our vision. Whether it’s to expose the workhouses of Victorian London in Dickens’ Oliver Twist, or the ravages of the Spanish Civil War in Picasso’s Guernica, or the social upheaval of the ‘60s with Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?, art inspires us to reconsider, to act, to challenge. We the People is a call to action to save those things which we hold most dear, our country and our freedom.”

The production team to date includes: Theron Wineinger (scenic design), Cat Wilson (lighting design), G. Max Maxin IV (projections design) and Neill Kelly (stage manager).

OPENING: Skeleton Crew at Northlight Theatre Through 3/3/18

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

Northlight Theatre continues its 2017-18 season with
Skeleton Crew
Written by Dominique Morisseau
Directed by Ron OJ Parson
Featuring Bernard Gilbert, Kelvin Roston Jr., AnJi White and Jacqueline Williams

January 25 – March 3, 2018

Here at ChiIL Live Shows we're eager to catch Skeleton Crew, which concludes Dominique Morisseau's acclaimed trilogy. I had an informal chat with director, Ron OJ Parson recently and he peaked my interest in the production even moreHe's even enlisted input on the show from a long time friend who has first hand experience working in the Detroit auto plants. I've thoroughly enjoyed Parson's directing prowess all over Chicago in the past few years, including Dominique Morisseau's Paradise Blue which was produced at Timeline Theatre in 2017I'll be out for the press opening February 2nd, so check back soon for my full review.

Skeleton Crew is part of a 3-part cycle of play by Dominique Morisseau set in Detroit Previously, Detroit ‘67 was produced at Northlight and Paradise Blue was produced locally at TimeLine. Ron OJ Parson directed all of them.

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, continues its 2017-18 season with Skeleton Crew, written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ron OJ Parson. Skeleton Crew runs January 25 – March 3, 2018 at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie.

At the start of the Great Recession, rumors of impending closure surround one of the last auto plants in Detroit. The nation’s financial crisis gets personal as each of the workers confronts the life-altering choices they must make if their plant goes under, while the supervisor is torn between allegiances to his makeshift family of co-workers and management’s “cost-saving” demands. When pushed to the limits of survival, how far over the lines are people willing to cross?

Playwright Dominique Morisseau was one of the Top 20 Most Produced Playwrights in America in 2015–16, with ten productions of her plays being produced. She is a two-time award winner of the NAACP Image Award, which celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.

The third play in Dominique Morisseau’s Detroit trilogy, Skeleton Crew was named one of Time Magazine’s 10 Best Shows of the Year. BJ Jones comments, “Several years ago Northlight introduced playwright Dominique Morisseau to Chicago with Detroit '67, the first installment of her Detroit trilogy. Paradise Blue was produced at Timeline Theatre in 2017, and Skeleton Crew completes the trio.

Her triptych spans decades of a sociopolitical evolution in her home city. With Skeleton Crew, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Morisseau looks at life on the assembly line—which feels like a conveyor belt to oblivion. Set in 2008, the diminishing workers are in a race to stay ahead of the collapsing economy, fighting for their financial lives. While much of the country has their eyes set on Wall Street, more concerned with their portfolios than their neighbors, the working majority don’t own stock and struggle to pay the rent. Dominique re-focuses our gaze on the majority, whose hourly wage becomes more precious by the day.”

The cast of Skeleton Crew includes Bernard Gilbert (Dez), Kelvin Roston Jr. (Reggie), Jacqueline Williams (Faye) and AnJi White (Shanita).

The creative team includes Scott Davis (Scenic Design), Samantha C. Jones (Costume Design), Keith Parham (Lighting Design), and Ray Nardelli (Sound Design). The production stage manager is Rita Vreeland.

Northlight’s production of Skeleton Crew is supported in part by The Chicago Community Trust, National Endowment for the Arts, The Pauls Foundation, Carol and Steve Mullins, Bill and Eleanor Revelle, Hagerty Consulting, and Alan Zunamon and Nancy Cunniff.

PRESENTS THE TONY AWARD-WINNING BROADWAY CLASSIC

"A triumph for the stage"
- Time Magazine

Here at ChiIL Live Shows we adore Marriott Theatre productions, from their stellar casting choices to their unique theatre in the round staging. We're eager to see their latest extravaganza and kick off for their 2018 season, Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, RAGTIME. I'll be out on February 1st to catch it, so check back soon for my full review.

From the volatile melting pot of New York City at the dawn of a new century, comes the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, RAGTIME, kicking off Marriott Theatre’s 2018 Season, January 24 through March 18, 2018 with a press opening on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m. at 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire. Featuring a powerful score by the Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and book by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally, RAGTIME is a sweeping musical portrait of America. Seven-time Jeff Award winner Nick Bowling (The Bridges of Madison County, Man of La Mancha, The King and I) returns to Marriott Theatre to direct, with Musical Direction by Jeff Award winner Ryan T. Nelson and Choreography by Kenneth L. Roberson.

“RAGTIME is a musical about individual people, but it shows the bigger picture of a struggling country, which is often divided by race, class, and economic standing, working together for American progress,” says Director Nick Bowling. “We live in such explosive times, but often, to move forward, it is necessary to endure hardships, and I think that is what makes RAGTIME such an emotional and beautiful musical.”

At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing and anything is possible. Based on the distinguished novel by E.L. Doctorow, this musical weaves together three distinctly American tales – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together, they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair... and what it means to live in America. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on this Island, Anastasia, Seussical) and noted playwright Terrence McNally, this acclaimed musical is filled with pageantry, emotion and hope, bursting onto the stage like no other musical.

RAGTIME stars Jeff Award Winner Kathy Voytko as “Mother” (Marriott Theatre: The Bridges of Madison County, Les Misérables; Chicago Shakespeare Theatre: Passion; Broadway: Oklahoma!, Nine, The Frogs, The Pirate Queen and Next to Normal); Jeff Award Winner Nathaniel Stampley as “Coalhouse Walker, Jr.” (Marriott Theatre: The Bridges of Madison County, Man of La Mancha; Broadway/National Tour: The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess; Broadway: Cats, The Color Purple and The Lion King; London: The Lion King; Apple Tree Theatre: Big River; Milwaukee Rep: Dreamgirls and Man of La Mancha); Benjamin Magnuson as “Tateh” (Broadway/National Tours: Guys and Dolls, Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables), Katherine Thomas as “Sarah” (Griffin Theatre: Ragtime; Porchlight Theatre: Dream Girls), Adam Monley as “Father” (Broadway: Les Misérables, Mamma Mia!, Tours: Deaf West’s Big River, Phantom of the Opera), and Will Mobley as “Younger Brother” (Writers Theatre: Julius Caesar, Days Like Today; Chicago Shakespeare Theater: Short Shakespeare! Twelfth Night). RAGTIME also stars Paula Hlava as “Little Girl,” Patrick Scott McDermott  as “Little Boy,” Jonathan Butler Duplessis as “Booker T. Washington,” Christina Hall as “Emma Goldman,” Michelle Lauto as “Evelyn Nesbit,” Matt Deitchman as “Henry Ford,” Alexander Aguilar as “Harry Houdini,” Keirsten Hodgens as “Sarah’s Friend,” Terry Hamilton as “Grandfather,” Larry Adams as “J.P. Morgan,” and Ken Singleton as “Willie Conklin,” with Curtis Bannister, Shea Coffman, Autumn Hlava, Christopher Kale Jones, James Earl Jones II, Ron King, Teressa LaGamba, Blace McGraw, Ben Miller, Zoe Nadal, Khadijah Rolle and Elizabeth Telford.

The production will feature set design by Jeff Kmiec, lighting design by Jesse Klug, sound design by Robert E. Gilmartin, properties design by Sally Weiss, and musical supervision and orchestra conducted by Patti Garwood.

Here at ChiIL Live Shows we've caught The Obsessed in Chicago on past tours and they were our favorites of CLUTCH's NYE 17/18 openers. We're Chicago based, but we were more than happy to road trip from Chi, IL to Columbus to catch CLUTCH. We've seen and photographed CLUTCH live numerous times over two decades and this was our 2nd time to catch them for a NYE show. I've even done a video interview with lead singer, Neil Fallon, that's still one of my favorite metal band interviews of all times. Fun fun. Here's our full set of photos of their openers, The Obsessed in the slide show here, with a few favorite shots embedded below. All photos by Bonnie Kenaz-Mara for ChiILLiveShows.com.

Thanks to CLUTCH for providing us with press comps and photo credentials. It's always a joy to shoot them and their openers in action.

REVIEW: Rose Blossoms Again At Greenhouse Theater Bringing Kennedy Family's Dark History to Light

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

"ROSE" Brings Post Chappaquiddick ROSE FITZGERALD KENNEDY to Greenhouse Theater Center

“ROSE,”
By Laurence Leamer
Directed by Steve Scott
Starring Linda Reiter

January 12 – March 11, 2018

Running Time: 1hr, 30mins

Review:

In this brilliant remount, acclaimed Chicago actress, Linda Reiter effortlessly channels Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, from her iconic pearls and fabulous fashion sense, to her unsettling family revelations. She is truly a treat to listen to, and keeps the audience's rapt attention for the duration. The Kennedy saga is fascinating in and of itself, but also as a microcosm of America's story. Theirs is an all American rags to riches, tale of immigrants made good. They lost sons in war, and political assassinations. They lost daughters prioritizing religion, propriety, and appearances over familial love.

Rose was intelligent, ambitious, and upwardly mobile, grooming her sons for greatness from birth, yet very much an American woman constrained by her era. While I chaffed at her ingrained sexism and the infidelity she endured and ignored in her husbands and later in her sons, she has a lovely outburst where she rails again her choices that's nothing short of cathartic and redeeming.

I particularly enjoyed the use of photo albums, projected on the stage curtain, as a storytelling device. Reiter does a lovely job creating a sympathetic character, showcasing Rose's parenting style, and embracing the travails of life in the public eye. History comes to life in this engaging solo show, with Kennedy matriarch as hostess and consumate story teller. Prior to this show, I was familiar with the JFK assassination, Chappaquiddick, and a smattering of Kennedy lore, but in this historical piece directed by Steve Scott so much more was revealed about the lives, loves, and deaths of the many Kennedy siblings, and this period of American history. Rose is well worth seeing, and now playing at Chicago's Greenhouse Theater Center through March 11th.

The Greenhouse Theater Center Presents

An intimate portrait of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Camelot’s “queen mother,” as she retraces the rise and fall of her great family. A break-out hit during the 2016 Solo Celebration! Series following its successful Off-Broadway run, ROSE is based on never-before-heard interviews compiled by distinguished Kennedy biographer Laurence Leamer.

“A lot has transpired in our nation’s political landscape since the first time that we mounted Rose, as part of last year’s Solo Celebration! Series,” comments Artistic Director Jacob Harvey. “The story of Rose Kennedy and her remarkable family has taken on a new resonance, assuring audiences that although our nation can face moments of turmoil and uncertainty, we have the ability to build a brighter future by exploring and understanding our collective past.”

The production team for ROSE includes: Kevin Hagan (scenic design), Rachel Lambert (costume design), Cat Wilson (lighting design) and Christopher Kriz (sound design) and Kasey Trouba (stage manager).

About the Greenhouse Theater Center
The Greenhouse Theater Center is a producing theater company, performance venue and theatre bookstore located at 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Our mission is first and foremost to grow local theatre.
The Greenhouse Theater began its producing life in 2014 with the smash hit Churchill, after which came 2016’s much-lauded Solo Celebration!, an eight month, 16 event series highlighting the breadth and depth of the solo play form. This year, the Greenhouse announced a full subscription season, with a mix of multi-character and solo plays. With a focus on our community, the Greenhouse has also launched the Trellis Residency Initiative, an initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of Chicago theatre creators, as well as the MC-10, an ensemble of mid-career playwrights whose works will be included in future Greenhouse programming.
As a performance venue, our complex offers two newly remodeled 190-seat main stage spaces, two 60-seat studio theaters, two high-capacity lobbies and an in-house rehearsal room. We strive to cultivate a fertile environment for local artists, from individual renters to our bevy of resident companies, and to develop and produce their work. In 2016, the Greenhouse announced a new residency program, which offers a reduced rate to local storefront companies while giving the Greenhouse a stake in the resident’s success. We house Chicago’s only dedicated used theatre bookstore, located on the second floor of our complex.

With new ideas always incubating, the Greenhouse is flourishing. Come grow with us!
