ChiIL Out With FREE Tickets To An Advanced Screening of One Direction: This Is Us

ChiIL out with FREE tickets from ChiIL Mama and our friends at GOFOBO. Passes are limited/first come first served.  Hey Naperville area readers... and those willing to truck on out to the burbs.   We have free passes for YOU.

We dig Morgan Spurlock's work.   Back in the day, my husband was the sound guy on 4 seasons of Insomniac With Dave Attell with Morgan Spurlock's cameraman.   He even got called to do audio for one of Spurlock's films, but he was already booked.   We still try to catch everything he directs.

ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US
IN THEATERS AUGUST 30th

We already gave away a slew of advanced screening passes in the city and now it's your turn, chiIL burb dwellers.  We have another advance screening of ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US.  Redeem a free admit-two pass to the screening this Saturday, August 10th at 11:00AM at the Hollywood Palms Theater (352 Illinois Route 59, Naperville, IL 60540). Please note the passes are first-come, first-served and a pass does not guarantee a seat. Those with passes should arrive early.

Synopsis: ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US is a captivating and intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon. Weaved with stunning live concert footage, this inspiring feature film tells the remarkable story of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis' meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor, to conquering the world and performing at London’s famed O2 Arena. Hear it from the boys themselves and see through their own eyes what it's really like to be One Direction.

Directed by Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and produced by Simon Cowell, Adam Milano, Spurlock and Ben Winston.

This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a fantastic participatory art event for families and fellow artists. If you're not familiar with FIGMENT, see the information below. We hope to see you next Saturday at the second GPC fire jam and FIGMENT Chicago!

What is FIGMENT?
FIGMENT is an explosion of creative energy taking place at Garfield Park Conservatory August 10-11. FIGMENT is a FREE, annual, family-friendly celebration of participatory art and culture where everything is possible.

FIGMENT wants to see imaginations blossom with thousands of visitors interacting directly with nearly 50 participating art projects and more than 300 artists and volunteers.

Artists have heard about FIGMENT germinating the seeds of its Chicago debut for the past year. The idea itself has spread worldwide for over a half-decade since its NYC roots. Like many new happenings, some haven't heard the call. Organizers have high hopes for a large contingency of West Side and Chicago families to converge at the Conservatory and relish a one-of-a-kind Saturday and Sunday adventure of pure expression.

**Sample artwork by a talented West Chicago youth at FIGMENT's July 10, 2013, Meet n' Greet.

Several of these individually enhanced posters are popping up all around Chicago including one by ChiIL Mama and a hord of kids from toddlers to tweens--made at the last Garfield fire jam.**

Highly Recommended Lolla Bands On Our Radar: Houndmouth & Saturday Heartless Bastards 6PM on The Grove

Did you catch Houndmouth's Lollapalooza set yesterday or opening for Heartless Bastards at another fav of ours... City Winery last night!   Put them on your must see list.   You can still catch Heartless Bastards TODAY at Lollapalooza

After Houndmouth's debut album dropped last month, the band several people have called "the Alabama Shakes of 2013" has been one of the busiest of the summer with two late night TV appearances on Conan and Letterman and nonstop touring and festivals. By Lolla, the quartet will have already hit Bonnaroo, Newport Folk, High Sierra, and their hometown Forecastle, where they were upgraded to the main stage at the last minute due to demand.

Rolling Stone has called them "earthy melancholy with a rude garage rock streak" and American Songwriter writes that their guitar "blows gates open at a full speed gallop."   ChiIL Live Shows will have a full album review up shortly.

Watch their Letterman performance of "Ludlow" (and see how they tweaked Dave on-air!): http://youtu.be/Q_eEx3N5Le0

This past weekend, Houndmouth made their Newport Folk Festival debut to glowing reviews. Rolling Stone called their Dylan cover with Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes a "highlight" of the weekend, Billboard said they "proved their mettle," and Paste called them the #2 Band to Watch.

Festival booker Jay Sweet pegged them as the next Newport breakout on NPR All Songs Considered, saying they "are just going to grow and follow that Avett Brothers kind of path." And during the NPR Music broadcast of their set, WFUV host Alisa Ali said "Even though they just released their debut album, they are so well seasoned, like good curly fries" and Ann Powers tweeted a Vine of them "rockin it": https://vine.co/v/hAg7qLTHilE

Next up for Houndmouth: Outside Lands, Austin City Limits, and a headlining fall tour (details coming soon).

Charleston, SC's Shovels & Rope (Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent) will make their Lollapalooza debut Saturday, August 3 on the Red Bull Sound Select Stage (12:45-1:30pm) in support of their most critically acclaimed album, O' Be Joyful. With the release, Shovels & Rope made their network television debut on The Late Show With David Letterman, debut on Austin City Limits and debut on Billboard Heatseekers chart while receiving accolades from a wide variety of press.  NPR Music, Associated Press, Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, New York Daily News, The Washington Post, SPIN, Nylon, Filter, American Songwriter, Relix, UTNE, American Public Media, CMT, Austin American Statesman, Garden & Gun and many others have praised the duo's compelling songs and sweat soaked live performances.  Click here for highlights

This week, NPR featured Shovels & Rope in Five New Faces Of Folk saying, "On stage, South Carolina singer-songwriters Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are geysers of goodwill: The husband-and-wife duo's chemistry and ramshackle playfulness make them difficult to resist. But listen to "Hail Hail," from last year's O' Be Joyful, and you'll also hear musicians for whom a smile is just one way to bare one's teeth."

The electrifying road warriors are making their debut on the major festival circuit this year, beginning with a thrilling performance at Coachella to which the New York Times said, “Of all this afternoon’s young bands, they were the softest, but they might make the loudest crash.” They won over fans at Sasquatch, Hangout, Wakarusa, & Forecastle festivals, with upcoming festival appearances scheduled at Newport Folk Festival, Austin City Limits, Voodoo Experience.

Shovels & Rope just wrapped an opening tour for Dawes with select opening shows for Dave Matthews Band. In September, the duo will hit the road for the remainder of 2013 on a headlining tour. For tour dates and more info, visit: http://www.shovelsandrope.com/

Highly Recommended Lolla Bands On Our Radar: O'Brother Sunday at Noon on BMI

O'Brother to Play Lollapalooza

Sunday
August 4th
12:00PM on the BMI Stage

5:00PM at the Toyota + SpinMedia Soundwave Tent
w/ Guards

O'Brother Premiere "Perilous Love" Exclusively with AV Club!

"'Perilous Love' is equal parts Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, a throwback thrasher that is pretty unrelenting." - A.V. Club

“Genre-bending rockers O’Brother beat the sophomore slump on Disillusion, an album as complex and textured as it is loud. Think Deftones meet Radiohead meet Alice in Chains. From distorted, sludgy guitars (there’s three of them in the band!) to frontman Tanner Merritt’s haunting vocals, this is an album with a beginning, middle, and end—each song building upon the last and masterfully bleeding into the next....Don’t let the name fool you; this is an album that won’t let you down.” – Revolver

“...genre-bending post-metal that is as operatic as it is destructive... Expect this record to end up on a lot of year-end best-of lists.” – Alternative Press

"As far as I'm concerned, there really isn't an active band that blends ethereal and skull-crushing heaviness as well as O' Brother do. Disillusion has the spacious soundscapes of a Sigur Ros record, the nuance-laced inventiveness of a Radiohead record, the haunting melodies of a Jeff Buckley record and the head banging heaviness of Isis' early work. And it's all blended together tastefully and seamlessly, with a perfect dose of patience to maximize the impact of shifts in dynamics. They set the bar awfully high for themselves after they released Garden Window, and somehow they've manage to raise it again with Disillusion. It's phenomenal." - Riley Breckenridge, Thrice
