TODAY Lolla Bands On Our Radar: Brick + Mortar play the Lolla BMI stage at 2:10pm on Friday
The band has a great sound and an amazing back story.  They released their debut “Bangs” EP on July 30. The singer's blood diamond smuggling dad inspired a lot of their music.  Check them out.
Brick + Mortar (Asbury Park, NJ) are an indie rock, drum and bass duo formed by Brandon Asraf (bass guitar, vocals) and bandmate John Tacon (drums, electronic samples, vocals).  Brick + Mortar have garnered a notable amount of regional success since their 2008 formation, making them a significant part of the musical and artistic culture of Asbury Park, New Jersey as it is the first electronic drum and bass pop duo to have such success in the area.
Since middle school, the two bonded further over their shared interest in the artistry of songwriting.  As Brick + Mortar, they began focusing more heavily on the use of electronic samples in their music as well as relying less on improvisation and more on structured pop songs.  Brick + Mortar represent the underground, the oppressed, the disillusioned, and voiceless.  Fusing driving percussion, grooving bass, eclectic samples, and anthemic vocals, the band creates a new world sound that is so fresh you truly need to hear it for yourself.
The roots of several of Brick + Mortar's songs stem from the incredible experiences of lead singer Brandon Asraf's childhood as the son of a international blood diamond smuggler.  In the band's lead single "Bangs", the bass hits like a massive punch to the face, and the narrative of the ultra-violent accompanying video, based on the life of Asraf's father, is likely one of the more brutal stories you've ever bore witness to.  "This video opened the door for us to be more than a band.  People seem to wait for that song to sing their hearts out at shows," explains Asraf of the impact the single has had on the band.  To quote Nylon Magazine, “There’s an undeniable energy that charges through New Jersey-based duo Brick + Mortar…Lead singer Brandon Asraf’s voice has a ferocious punch to it and effortlessly moves from solemn croon to savage cry without losing an ounce of passion along the way. Tensions build and tribal beats boom under biting lyrics. These guys will hit you like a delightful ton of bricks (pun intended).”
Brick + Mortar are set to release their 7-song EP titled “Bangs” on July 30th, and includes favorites such as “Bangs”, “Heatstroke” and “Old Boy” along with brand new tracks “Terrible Things”, “No I Won’t Go”, “Locked In A Cage”, as well as “Keep This Place Beautiful” which was co-written by Justyn Pilbrow (The Neighborhood - “Sweater Weather”).
Brick + Mortar's consistent performances quickly gained them a strong following as one of the best live bands in the Asbury Park music scene. Notable support for national acts include performances with Galactic, Jimmy Eat World, H.R. [Bad Brains], and Cymbals Eat Guitars.  Their live show is a party that erupts like a magnetic sonic volcano catching the attention of everyone in the room, drawing them to the stage full of intrigue and energy.
Aside from touring Brick + Mortar will also be busy with several other projects this Fall, including putting out a fully animated music video created by artist Richie Brown and focusing on writing for their debut full length.  "The goal is to make our album an audiovisual experience.  I feel like the songs we are working on are our best yet.  We are ready to make a full length record.  We are not for the faint of heart.  Our brash, gritty, whip-smart sound foregoes guitar in favor of bass, drums, and electronic samples.  At our shows, the audience is part of the band.  That's what makes playing each show uniquely exciting and inspiring. We will give you 100% every time because we truly love what we do.  Hopefully, you give us 100% back".

Lolla DJs On Our Radar: "Harlem Shake" Baauer Saturday at 4:30 at Perry's
Baauer’s behind the “Harlem Shake” which became a YouTube phenomenon and propelled Baauer to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 5 weeks and is one of the biggest selling singles of 2013.  He was the first at the time unknown artist to score a #1 Billboard Hot 100 generated mostly by streams after Billboard revamped the chart to include streaming numbers along with sales and airlplay.
Baauer is definitely one of the most exciting young DJ/producers on the scene.   In addition to his own projects and touring, he has kept impressively busy with superlative remix work for artists including The Prodigy, No Doubt, Disclosure, AlunaGeorge and more.
The next Baauer single is coming through Priority Records on August 13th.
It is a collaboration with Grammy-winning JAY Z producer Just Blaze called “Higher” featuring JAY Z.

Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk Interview With ChiIL Live Shows #originalvideointerview #band #funk
New Orleans princes of funk, Ivan and his cousin Ian Neville (sons of Aaron and Art), continue the family tradition as touring musicians with a talented lineup in Dumpstaphunk. It was our great pleasure to score an interview with them at Summer Camp Music Festival 2013, over Memorial Day weekend.
Check out our interview for their account of a harrowing, near death experience the night before, when another driver fell asleep with the cruise control on, careened across the median and came within feet of a head on collision with their van!!

ChiIL Live Shows congratulates Million Dollar Quartet on their recent exciting landmark.  The Chicago production just celebrated 2000 performances July 11th!
The kids and I thoroughly enjoyed Million Dollar Quartet when we had a chance to catch the show and meet with the cast last winter!   Click here to check out our review and past coverage.   Million Dollar Quartet makes our ChiIL Picks List for multigenerational musical fun.   This is one show that will be as much fun for the grandparents as the kids.
To mark the 2,000th show, original MDQ cast member (now on the National Tour) Kelly Lamont joined the company for a “Sitting in with the Band” appearance during the encore.  The company also celebrated with a specially-designed cake, courtesy of The French Pastry School.
Million Dollar Quartet, now Chicago’s longest-running Broadway musical, is stronger than ever.  Tickets are on sale into January 2014.
Million Dollar Quartet celebrates record-breaking run in Chicago with
new block of tickets on sale now through January 5, 2014!
Million Dollar Quartet, now the longest-running Broadway musical production in Chicago’s history, has extended through January 5, 2014.  With 2,000 performances and 5 smash years in Chicago, the Tony Award-winning rock ‘n’ roll musical has set a new record for the longest-running Broadway musical in Chicago.
The Chicago production continues to break box office records at the Apollo Theater, 2540 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago.  Tickets are now on sale through January 5, 2014 at the Apollo box office, phone (773) 935-6100, and online through Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com.   For more information, visit www.milliondollarquartetlive.com.
Producer Gigi Pritzker comments, “After five incredible years, 500,000 tickets sold, 2,000 performances, 6,000 guitar picks, and 500 cans of hairspray it’s an absolute thrill for MDQ to take its place as the longest-running musical in Chicago history.  Since the very beginning, Chicago has embraced Million Dollar Quartet and we are grateful for the continued and enthusiastic support of our home town audiences.  It’s been a hit in Chicago, New York, London, Japan, Las Vegas and on the national tour.  The show remains as exciting and engaging as always—partially due to the more than 20 rock ‘n’ roll hits in the show and the tremendous talent on stage.”
Million Dollar Quartet has extended performances through January 5, 2014, with cast members Brandon Bennett (Elvis Presley), Shaun Whitley (Carl Perkins), Lance Lipinsky (Jerry Lee Lewis), Chris Damiano(Johnny Cash), Tim Decker (Sam Phillips), Whitney Kraus Jones (Dyanne), Marc Edelstein (Jay Perkins/Bass player) and Dan Leali (Fluke/Drummer).
The Tony Award-winning musical inspired by the famed 1956 recording session that brought together legendary rock ‘n’ roll icons Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, celebrates its long run in Chicago, a Tony Award-winning New York run, a long-running London production, a newly-opened production in Las Vegas, and a national tour that kicked-off in October 2011.

ABOUT MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET
On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis.  The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ’n’ Roll,” who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.
Million Dollar Quartet features a treasure trove of the greatest rock ’n’ roll, gospel, R&B and country hits from these music legends, including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Ring of Fire,” “Whole Lotta’ Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Hound Dog.”  Million Dollar Quartet captures the infectious spirit, freewheeling excitement and thrilling sounds of a singular moment when four of the music industry’s most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history.
