Shakespeare’s epic RICHARD III Via Promethean Theatre Ensemble Now Playing Through June 25, 2002, at The Factory Theater

ChiIL Live Shows On Our Radar

Promethean Theatre Ensemble will return from its pandemic hiatus with a modern dress storefront production of Shakespeare’s epic RICHARD III. The play will be directed by Steve Scott, an Artistic Associate with the Goodman Theatre, where he most recently directed VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE. Scott’s other recent credits include KING LEAR and THE HUMANS at Redtwist Theatre. The title character will be played by Promethean ensemble member Cameron Feagin, who was lauded for her performance last fall as President John F. Kennedy in City Lit Theater’s all-female production of THIRTEEN DAYS. Promethean’s RICHARD III will be performed from May 20 to June 25, 2002, at The Factory Theater, 1623 W. Howard Street in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.

"Promethean Theatre Ensemble has done a tremendous job in their performance of William Shakespeare's Richard III at Chicago's Factory Theater."

Julia W. Rath, Around the Town

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A cast of 15 will play over 30 characters of Shakespeare’s epic history play, also considered a tragedy. Director Scott says, “As one of Shakespeare's largest plays, it’s not often attempted by storefront theaters. I've seen the play produced with very few actors (focusing mainly on the character of Richard) and a lot of actors (focusing on the immense machine that was the monarchy). I've decided to split the difference by keeping the cast total at 15--small enough to keep primary focus on Richard but large enough to explore what I think is the major theme of the play, which is the corrupting nature of the acquisition of power whatever the cost, and the chaos that results when that power is gained only for its own sake, without any notion of what that power can be used to achieve.”

"Overall this was a straightforward, well-executed production of Richard III…. Anchored by Cameron Feagin’s thoroughly evil but ultimately still human performance, I thoroughly enjoyed this production."

Kevin Curran, Chicago Theatre Review

The costumes designed by Rachel Lambert (she/her/hers) will be modern dress, but as Scott explains, “with vestiges of generations and fashions past--emphasizing the fact that this is not just the story of one individual's fight for control, but a story that has been played out for generations before (and after).” In addition to Scott and Lambert, the production team also includes Therese Ritchie (Scenic Designer), Benjamin Dionysus (Lighting Designer), Sebby Woldt (Sound Designer), Tristan Brandon (Props Designer), Maureen Yasko (she/her/hers, Fight and Intimacy Director), Paulette Hicks (Text Coach), Lauren Katz (Assistant Director), Alexa Berkowitz* (Production Manager), Jeremiah Barr* (Technical (Director and COVID compliance), and Becky Warner (Stage Manager).

Tickets, priced at $30 general, $25 seniors, $15 students are on sale now at www.prometheantheatre.org.

"Cameron Feagin gives you everything you want in a Richard—smart, scheming, charismatic, funny and self-consciously theatrical….Come out to see Feagin as a fantastic Richard III."

Promethean Theatre Ensemble selects a service organization to support and promote with each production, bridging ideas within the play to real-world efforts to address challenges within our communities. Promethean’s partner for RICHARD III is Chicago Votes – a non-profit, non-partisan organization building a more inclusive democracy by putting power into the hands of young Chicagoans. The company says, “Chicago Votes was chosen as a partner for RICHARD III because the work that they do is a direct response to the kind of unchecked totalitarianism we see in this play, and in the world.” Promethean will promote Chicago Votes throughout the run of RICHARD III, and raise money for the organization through audience donations.

The crown:  the symbol of ultimate power and the goal of one of Shakespeare’s most extravagantly charming (and despicable) creations, Richard of Gloucester. As literature’s most infamous outcast seduces and bludgeons his way to power, who is complicit? Both a mesmerizing look at history and a mirror to our own turbulent times, RICHARD III stands as one of the Bard’s most indelibly entertaining, viscerally shocking dissections of the unholy marriage of greed and complacency.

WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND UNAFRAID

By Sarah Treem

Directed by Sara Pavlak McGuire

May 13 – June 12, 2022 at The Edge Off-Broadway Theater

AstonRep Theatre Company is pleased to conclude its 2020-21 season with the Chicago premiere of Sarah Treem’s courageous drama When We Were Young and Unafraid, directed by Sara Pavlak McGuire*, playing May 13 – June 12, 2022 at The Edge Off-Broadway Theater, 1133 W. The cast includes JoAnn Birt, Halle Hoffman, Sean Kelly*, Julie Partyka and Claire Allegra Taylor. Understudies include Tess Galbiati, Hilary Hensler, Maddy Moderhack, Jack Rodgers and Effie Rose.

*Denotes AstonRep Company Members.

In the early 1970s, before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, Agnes has turned her quiet bed and breakfast into one of the few spots where victims of domestic violence can seek refuge. But to Agnes’s dismay, her latest runaway, Mary Anne, is beginning to influence Agnes’s college-bound daughter Penny. As the drums of a feminist revolution grow louder outside of Agnes’s tiny world, Agnes is forced to confront her own presumptions about the women she’s spent her life trying to help.

Director Sara Pavlak McGuire* comments, “Against the backdrop of the early 1970s, Treem's play shines a light on the faces of women who fought (each in their own ways) to create lasting and powerful change in America. At the same time, this play provides a cautionary tale for today's woman of how close she may be to witnessing an oppression that this generation has not yet seen. And so we hope it provokes her to continue to fight; whether it be quietly from her home or loudly from the front lines. May she be inspired by the women in this story to use her voice and to help the women around her. After two years, we are honored to finally present the story of these four women and are thrilled to premiere it here in Chicago.”

The production team to date includes Jeremiah Barr* (scenic, props and specialty make-up design), kClare McKellaston (costume, hair and wig design) Samantha Barr* (lighting design, production manager), Robert Tobin* and Melanie Thompson* (sound design), Claire Yearman (intimacy director), Kathryn Greenlea (costume assistant), Maryah Paige (assistant lighting designer, assistant stage manager) and Kristi Roshto (stage manager).

OPENING: Athena Via Writers Theatre May 5-July 10, 2022

ChiIL Live Shows On Our Radar

Writers Theatre continues 2021/22 Season with

Athena

Written by Gracie Gardner

Directed by Jessica Fisch

May 5-July 10, 2022

Writers Theatre, under the leadership of Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma and Interim Artistic Director Bobby Kennedy, continues its 2021/22 Season with Athena, by Gracie Gardner, directed by Jessica Fisch in the Gillian Theatre at 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe. I'll be out for the press opening May 13th, so check back soon for my full review. I studied fencing and stage combat in college and loved it, so I'm particularly eager to catch this production with my 19 year old daughter, Sage.

Mary Wallace and Athena are both seventeen-year-old fencers training for Nationals. Mary Wallace lives in a house in New Jersey, loves marine biology and practices at home. Athena lives in an apartment in New York City, takes acne medication and Athena is not her real name. Follow their journey from competitors to confidantes as they form a bond navigating the milestones of adolescence, training together only to learn the future is only certain for one of them.

Fight choreography plays an important role in this production as each performance features live fencing on stage. The cast has taken fencing lessons at Lincoln Square Fencing Club and co-choreographers David Blixt and Christian Kelly-Sordelet are rehearsing with the cast to bring those lessons to life on stage. The sport equally adds action to the production, propels the plot, develops the characters, and deepens the story.

A fast-paced, engaging new play from Gracie Gardner, the winner of the 2017 Relentless Award, Athena received a critically acclaimed premiere in New York in 2018. Director Jessica Fisch (Cry It Out at Northlight Theatre, Every Brilliant Thing at Windy City Playhouse) brings her deft touch for storytelling to this portrait of two high-achieving young women, simultaneously rivals and allies, pushing each other to be the best.

Audiences, including those with little-to-no experience with or knowledge of fencing, can expect to get caught up in the action, tension, and elegance of the sport. The traditionally masculine sport of fencing is positioned it in the lives of these two young characters, reflecting what it is to navigate the tricky world of teenage friendship in a new and surprising way.

The cast includes Mary Tilden (Athena) and Aja Singletary (Mary Wallace). The understudies are Emma Rosenthal (Athena) and Kianna Rose (Mary Wallace).

The creative team includes: David Blixt and Christian Kelly-Sordelet (Co-Choreographers), Arnel Sanciano (Scenic Designer), Mieka van der Ploeg (Costume Designer), Paul Toben (Lighting Designer), and Mikhail Fiksel (Sound Designer/Composer), The assistant director is Grace Dolezal-Ng and the stage manager is Miranda Anderson.

Interim Artistic Director Bobby Kennedy comments, “Writers Theatre is pleased to produce the Midwest premiere of Gracie Gardner’s Athena, following highly successful runs of the play in London and New York. This intimate portrait of the friendship and rivalry between two teenage athletes crackles to life with its charming honesty and kinetic fencing choreography. In the crucible-like Gillian Theatre, the clashing of swords and emotions mere inches from the audience will create a theatrical experience unlike anywhere else. It’s the perfect play for us to continue our 30th Anniversary Season, as it highlights the joys and trials of young women today in a fresh and life-affirming way.”

The World Premiere of NOTES & LETTERS Via Underscore Theatre Company May 10 – 28, 2022 at the Richard Christiansen Theater

ChiIL Live Shows On Our Radar

Tenth Anniversary Season!

Underscore Theatre Company Presents the World Premiere of

NOTES & LETTERS

Book, Music & Lyrics by Annabelle Lee Revak

 Directed by Leah Geis

Music Direction by Anna Wegener

Choreography by Ebrin R. Stanley

May 10 – 28, 2022 at the Richard Christiansen Theater

Underscore Theatre Company celebrates its tenth anniversary season with the world premiere of Notes & Letters featuring book, music and lyrics by Annabelle Lee Revak (she/her), based on letters Revak’s great-great grandfather Joe Loula sent to his family upon his immigration to Chicago from Eastern Europe. Originally slated to open in the spring of 2020, the musical is directed by Leah Geis (she/they), with music direction by Anna Wegener (she/her) and choreography by Ebrin R. Stanley (he/him). Notes & Letters will play May 10 – 28, 2022 at the Richard Christiansen Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Tickets are currently available at victorygardens.org, by calling (773) 871-3000 or in person at The Biograph Theater Box Office, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. I'll be out for the press opening Thursday, May 12th, so check back soon for my full review.

The cast includes Katy Campbell (she/her), Caitlin Dobbins (she/her), Sam Martin (he/him) and Michael Mejia (they/them). Understudies include Aaron Reese Boseman (he/him), Nate Hall (he/him), Jamie Redwood (she/her) and Jasmine Robertson (she/her).

Notes & Letters follows Joe’s journey from war-torn Prague to Williams Piano Shop in Chicago in 1917. He quickly befriends the owner Charlie, his girlfriend Nora and composer Olivia. The foursome become inseparable – until World War I hits the U.S. Businesses, relationships and lives are put to the test. Based on a true story and set to a jazz-contemporary score, four young people struggle to make choices amid complete chaos.

Comments Underscore Artistic Director Whitney Rhodes, "We are proud and grateful to complete the development process we've been on with Notes & Letters now for over four years. Annabelle has written a charming and heartfelt story that is ultimately about friendship in times of complex outside change. While the show is set in the early 1900s, the themes are so present and alive in this moment. Its catchy score will leave you humming and the honest storytelling will leave you hopeful – which I think we all crave as we return to the theater. I'm grateful that Leah, Anna and Ebrin have all stayed with the project and am thrilled to welcome many new faces to our production team to work alongside a few of our stalwart designers. Plus, Notes & Letters had its very first workshop reading at the Richard Christiansen Theater, so this is a true full circle moment."

The production team includes Rebekah Clark (scenic design, they/she), Christina Leinicke (costume design, she/her), Benjamin Carne (lighting design, he/him), Timothy McNulty (sound design, he/him), Kathryn Healy (props design, she/her), Aaron Jamieson Roberts (dramaturg, he/him), Lauren Peters (production manager, she/her), Ben Lipinski (technical director, he/him) and Abby Teel (stage manager, she/her).

CANCELED: FIRST FOLIO THEATRE PRESENTS Jane Austin’s EMMA From March 26th to April 24th, 2022

Canceled as of 3/29

Jane Austin’s EMMA

Running time: 2 hours with 1 intermission

First Folio Theatre has been a longtime favorite of ours here at ChiIL Live Shows. We adore their ritzy digs at Mayslake Peabody Estate and can't wait to see Jane Austin’s EMMA in this historic setting. Check back soon after the opening for my full review.

First Folio Theatre (Mayslake Peabody Estate, 31st St. & Rt. 83) is thrilled to present Jane Austen’s EMMA by Phil Timberlake, previewing March 23rd, 24th, and 25th, opening March 26th, and running through April 24th, 2022. Come revel in Austen’s most joyous and light-hearted romantic comedies as young Emma Woodhouse seeks to prove her skills at matchmaking, in one of Jane Austen’s most delightful works! A refreshing take on this classic novel, patrons will love following the residents of Highbury in their trials and tribulations while they weather the force of nature that is Emma.

From Jeff Nominated playwright Phil Timberlake, Jane Austen’s EMMA follows Miss Emma Woodhouse, a young woman of England’s landed gentry with perhaps too much time on her hands. Good-hearted Emma cannot resist inserting herself into the love lives of her neighbors, leaving a muddle of passions and a tangle of heartbreak in her wake. After successfully playing matchmaker for her governess, she sets her sights on finding a suitable marriageable match for her new friend, the young and impressionable Miss Harriet Smith. Unfortunately, the more Emma continues to meddle in the lives of Harriet and the other residents of Highbury, the more things go awry, until Emma is forced to reckon with not only the disastrous effects of her meddling in the love lives of others, but also face the surprising desire of her own heart.

Jane Austen’s EMMA, written by Phil Timberlake, and directed by Rachel Lambert, features Vero Maynez as Emma and an ensemble that includes Bradley Halverson, Dina Monk, Ethan Miles Perry, and Nate Santana. The artistic team includes Scenic Design by Angela Weber Miller, Lighting Design by Garret Bell , Original Music by Christopher Kriz, Sound Design by Eric Backus, Costume Design by Zach Wagner, Properties Design by Wendy Ann, Vocal Design by Sammi Grant, Dramaturgy by Kaeli Meno and Intimacy & Movement Design by Maureen Yasko. Sarah West is the Stage Manager.

Opening on March 26th, 2022, EMMA runs through April 24th, 2022, with special Preview Performances on March 23rd, 24th and 25th. All performances will take place at historic Mayslake Hall, located at 1717 W 31st St., off Rt. 83 in Oak Brook.
