Destinos, 6th Chicago International Latino Theater FestivalChicago’s annual citywide festival showcasing Latino theater artists and companies from Chicago, the U.S. and Latin America, returns September 28-November 9, 2023.

Each fall, Destinos is a cultural high point of Chicago’s Latino Heritage Month, showcasing Latino theater artists and companies from Chicago, the U.S. and Latin America. 

The festival is produced by the Chicago Latino Theater Alliance (CLATA), and is presented annually to drive Chicago’s vibrant Latino theater scene to a more prominent level locally, nationally and internationally.
 
Today, CLATA unveiled the 2023 Destinos line-up – 17 productions all new to Chicago debuting at theaters large and small all over the city, including four world premieres, two North American premieres, one U.S. premiere, and five Midwest premieres. Tickets to most productions go on sale Friday, August 18 at destinosfest.org

The 2023 Destinos Festival is bringing three exciting international productions from Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia to Chicago: 

La Tía Mariela, written and directed by acclaimed Mexican theater artist Conchi León, is a tale about 12 Mayan aunts whose names all begin with “M.” Co-presented by CLATA and the National Museum of Mexican Art for three shows only: October 3-5. Opens Tuesday, October 3.

The North American premiere of Puerto Rico Theatre Lab’s Armonía, written by Ricardo André Lugo, directed by Edgardo Soto. This is a story of a passionate love triangle that entangles Vincent, and his ex-partners, Daniel and Lucía. One weekend only: October 19-22 at The Den Theatre in Wicker Park. Opens Thursday, October 19.

Yo No Estoy Loca via Teatro Petra in Colombia, a North American premiere written and directed by Fabio Rubiano, featuring theater, television and film actor Marce Valencia. Rubiano and Valencia are co-founders of Teatro Petra, one the most prestigious theater companies in Colombia. Performances are October 26-28 at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in Hermosa. Opens Thursday, October 26.


U.S. productions, traveling from out-of-town for their Chicago debuts, include:

Taxilandia, a Midwest premiere written, directed and performed by Modesto Flako Jimenez, presented by ¡Oye! and Flako Studios, New York City. This one-man show, developed in Jimenez’s neighborhood, Bushwick, Brooklyn, was drawn from his nine years driving a taxi, documenting conversations with passengers, locals and immigrants to his neighborhood. Taxilandia runs October 12-14 at The Den TheatreOpens Thursday October 12.

Acclaimed California-based artist and poet Yosimar Reyes takes audiences on a journey into his experience growing up queer in the ‘hood of East San Jose in his one-man show, Prieto. This Midwest premiere from Living Word Project in San Jose is co-presented by CLATA and Chicago Shakespeare Theater one weekend only, October 20-22. Opens Friday, October 20.

Destinos Spotlight Weekend kicks off this year’s festival September 28-30 at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theater with four nights of Chicago Latine artists performing four different genres: comedia, improv, musica and teatro fisico. The weekend kicks off with Vanessa Garcia’s sketch comedy revue La Carne Asada, Thursday, September 28; a comedy improv night Friday, September 29; Cabaret Parodia’s Dramaticas: A Telenovela & Musical Revue, Saturday, September 30; and an all-Latine Scratch Night with Physical Theater Festival Chicago, Monday, October 2. 

A witch wants to get rid of all numbers, but discovers math is a beautiful subject in El Baile De Los Númerosa world premiere production for families by Tomas Urtusastegui, directed by Karla Galvan. Presented September 30-October 8 by Teatro Tariakuri in Marquette Park, featuring the company’s Los Chilpayates Youth EnsembleOpens Saturday, September 30.

Peter Malmo, a world premiere “ScandiMexican tragedy” by Raúl Dorantesand Mark Litwick, in a co-production from Colectivo El Pozo and Akvavit Theatre. This new play, inspired by Juan Rolfo’s classic novel "Pedro Páramo” and reset in wintery Wisconsin, runs October 6-29 at Raven TheatreOpens Friday, October 6.

The American Dream, a world premiere by Juan Ramirez Jr., about a Guatemalan immigrant held captive by her human coyote, presented by Subtext Studio Theatre at Madison Street Theater in Oak Park. Omar Vicente Fernandez, formerly with 16th Street Theatre, directs. Performances are October 5-29. Opens Saturday, October 7.

Goodman Theatre and the Chicago Latino Theater Alliance (CLATA) present Prism Movement Theatre (Dallas)’s Lucha TeotlPro wrestling bursts onto the stage in this high-octane, immersive, 90-minute thrill ride, written and directed by Christopher Llewyn Ramirez and Jeff Colangelo. Audiences will sit ringside as actors and luchadores in masks representing Aztec gods play out an exciting wrestling story about family, honor, tradition and redemption. This Midwest premiere runs September 29-October 29. Opens Monday, October 9.

Teatro Tariakuri in Marquette Park presents the world premiere of Lotería: Dichos, Proverbios, Albureswritten by Tomas Urtusastegui, co-directed by Karla Galvan and Esteban PantojaLotería re-imagines the game of Mexican lottery, using traditional expressions and proverbs instead of the usual iconic images. Performances are October 14-29. Opens Saturday, October 14.

Lace up your gloves for Visión Latino Theater’s That Must Be The Entrance To HeavenFranky D. Gonzalez’s play about four Latino prize fighters chasing their dreams of a world boxing title. Xavier M. Custodiodirects this Midwest premiere, a poetic collision of combat and cosmos, October 14-November 5 at UrbanTheater Company in Humboldt Park. Opens Wednesday, October 18.

Repertorio Latino Theater presents the world premiere of La Jom Atendaby Dio-genes Abreu, about the deep human relationship developed between a home attendant and her aging client. Performances are October 19-November 5 at Chess Live in Bridgeport. Opens Saturday, October 21.

Aguijón Theatre, Chicago’s oldest Latino theater, will present a Spanish-language production TBA at the National Museum of Mexican Art, November 7-9. Opens Tuesday, November 7.

A witch wants to get rid of all numbers, but has a change of heart when she learns that math is a beautiful subject in El Baile de los Números, a new production for family audiences featuring Teatro Tariakuri’s Los Chilpayates Youth Ensemble.

Peter Malmo is a reinterpretation of Mexican writer Juan Rolfo’s classic novel "Pedro Páramo." Johnny, the protagonist, arrives in a small town in wintery Wisconsin in search of his father. While encountering the ghosts of former residents, Johnny discovers his father’s, his family’s and the town’s past. He also meets a newly arrived immigrant couple determined to revitalize their new hometown. Strap in for this “ScandiMexican Tragedy” that brings new light to Rolfo’s themes of death, desolation and rebirth.

Corina is a Guatemalan immigrant who has smuggled her way across the border guided by her coyote Efren. Instead of finding freedom, she finds herself imprisoned by her human smuggler, who now holds her inside a safe house, awaiting final payment from her husband. Set in the last hour and twenty minutes, Corina begs for her freedom. But letting her go is against everything Efren stands for.

American Dream is written by Juan Ramirez, Jr. It was selected for the New American Voices Play Reading Series at The Landing Theatre in Houston, was part of the inaugural Broadway Bound Theatre Festival at the 14th Street Y, and was a semifinalist for Stage Left Theatre’s 2016 Downstage Left residency. 

This world premiere is directed by Omar Vicente Fernandez, a Mexican American theater artist, born in Berwyn, a former staff member at 16th Street Theatre, and co-founder of Subtext Studio. In 2022, he joined forces with Dragonfly Theatre Company’s Jean Gottlieb to create Subtext Studio Theatre Company. subtextstudiotc.org

Taxilandia, created by Dominican-born Modesto Flako Jimenez, immerses its audience in the flavors, sounds, sights, and dynamic history of a neighborhood confronting social stigmas and the realities of gentrification. Originally developed in Jimenez’s own neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, the piece was inspired and drawn from his nine years driving a taxicab and his documentation of conversations with passengers, residents, locals, and immigrants to the neighborhood. 

Weaving a dramatic, performative ‘tapestry’ that interconnects generations, social classes, races, and cultures, Taxilandia complicates our notion of what it means to be a local, an immigrant, or a resident of a place, challenging us to answer: “What is my personal roadmap of home?”

Exciting Changes to League of Chicago Theatres' Hot Tix Nonprofit Discounted Ticket Service

Hot Tix

Chicago’s only local, nonprofit discounted ticket service for

theatre, dance and comedy 

The League of Chicago Theatres announces exciting changes to Hot Tix, Chicago’s discount ticket service for the League’s 200+ members. To remain competitive and to best serve the needs of its members, Hot Tix, historically a half-price ticketing service, will now offer all discounted tickets beginning July 3, 2023. Half-price tickets will also remain an option, but discounts will now vary.

HotTix operates online at HotTix.org and in-person at Guest Services inside Block 37 Shops on State, 108 N State Street. The Block 37 location is open Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 11am-5pm.

Tickets sold through Hot Tix are meant to be the lowest offered by any third-party tickets service. Proceeds provide revenue through ticket sales to individual theaters and by supporting programs of the League of Chicago Theatres, which promotes, supports and advocates for the theatre industry.  

League of Chicago Theatres Executive Director Marissa Lynn Jones comments, “Hot Tix is an important program on many levels. It provides an affordable entry point to theater for audiences, supports individual theatres in neighborhoods across the city and suburbs, and sales directly support the League of Chicago Theatres, a non-profit that uplifts the industry through its grants, programs and advocacy.”

Since reopening after the pandemic in August 2021, Hot Tix has sold over 86,000 tickets and has served more than 18,000 patrons at the in-person outlets downtown. Hot Tix has sold tickets for 500+ productions since reopening, putting more than 1.5 million dollars back into the Chicago Theatre community.

They're seen everywhere. The theatre industry is rife with narcissists, abusive bosses, toxic workplaces, misleading ads, and new talent hungry for a chance to break into the field of their dreams. Being Seen brings the audience along for the ride on an audition from hell. I adore the dynamic of two person shows, and Will Clinger and Kelly Anne Clark are amazing to watch in this high energy, psychologically wrenching production. It's a timely piece, especially relevant in our current era of gig workers, toxic politicians, and cancel culture. This delightfully insidious production brings abuse of power to light with equal parts horror and hilarity.

Kelly Anne Clark in particular, just killed it in this invasively soul baring audition. This tour de force comedy asks the question: “What would you do for a dream?”, and she shouts back with physical, mental, and emotional gymnastics. The audience is left to question why we've let fame and acclaim excuse indecent and even illegal behavior for far too long. 

Being Seen is a gaslighting bonanza and a must see for anyone embarking on the audition or interview process. If you've ever been in a relationship, job, or friendship with a narcissist, this show will ring true. Highly recommended. Don't miss this limited run.

Milwaukee Ave.  The preview date is Wednesday, June 14 at 8:00.

This captivating, fast-paced comedy by Richard Gustin looks at launching a “fresh start.” An actor answers the audition notice of a highly acclaimed director and finds herself navigating his outlandish creative process.

The original production at the New York International Fringe Festival starred Broadway actor William Youmans and Allison Minick and premiered at the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival to critical and audience acclaim. “The most nonstop laughs at FringeNYC this year (2015) were provided by a show about theatre… simultaneously comedic and thought-provoking,” said HYReviews.com about the New York production and Theatre in The Now wrote, “the script Gustin has written is wickedly smart. The dialogue is snappy, the conversations are genius. . . There was never a dull moment and every beat has a purpose. The storytelling is sharp and precise.”

It’s 1984 and Becky, Billy and the gang have the closing shift at the local Venture and the store has to be ready in the morning for a big inspection. There is a huge party happening after work and they just might have to figure out their future. They all join forces to get all the work done which means facing end caps of Speed Stick and racing to get those carts collected.

ABOUT LEN FOOTE, playwright

Len Foote (he/him) is excited to see the play he co-wrote with Scott OKen on The Factory Theater stage. He acted in two plays at The Factory, “Siskel and Ebert Save Chicago” (2007) and “Mop Top Festival” (2009) and is in the improv/sketch group HippoHorsey DonkeyMonkey, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a reunion show on July 29, location currently TBD.


ABOUT SCOTT OKEN**, playwright and director

Scott OKen (he/him/OKen) is very pleased to be returning as a guest Playwright and Director to The Factory Theater. OKen was artistic director from 2007-2018 and his Factory credits include “Oh Sh#t! It’s Haunted,”  “Xmas Endgame” and “Fight City” among countless others.

Trap Door Theatre is thrilled to round out its 29th season with the US premiere of Bowie in Warsaw, Dorota Masłowska’s absurd comedy about freedom of self expression in Soviet era Poland. This new translation by Soren Gauger was exclusively commissioned for Trap Door Theatre. Directed by guest director from Poland Paweł Świątek, Bowie in Warsaw will play May 18 – July 1, 2023 at Trap Door Theatre, 1655 W Cortland St. in Chicago. The women of Warsaw tremble with the rumor of a strangler on the prowl... Set in the landscape of a true crime story from 1970’s Poland, Bowie In Warsaw is an absurd comedy about the repression of self expression and love in a Soviet era Poland. Playwright Dorota Masłowska creates an atomic-era Polish landscape, which might even inspire a visit from David Bowie himself.

Trap Door is honored to invite Polish director Paweł Świątek to direct our third Dorota Masłowska play after our successful productions of A Couple of Poor Polish Speaking Romanians and No Matter How Hard We Try. Dorota Masłowska is one of Poland’s most exciting and influential young novelists and playwrights.

About the Artists

Dorota Masłowska (Playwright) (b. 1983) is one of the most renowned Polish writers and playwrights. Her first novel translated into English as Snow White and Russian Red, was published while she was still a teenager and made her an instant literary sensation in her native country. The novel detailed the growing pains of marginalized small-town youth. In 2005, Masłowska published her second book, The Queen’s Peacock, a 150 page rap poem in prose. Both of these books were adapted for the stage in Poland, Germany and Great Britain. Masłowska wrote her first play, A Couple of Poor-Polish Speaking Romanians, in 2006 (Staged by Trap Door in 2009) and her second one, No Matter How Hard We Try, or We Can Exist on the Best Terms We Can, in 2008. In 2012, Masłowska published another novel, Honey, I Killed our Cats, and in 2014 released her first music album, The Society is Mean, a mixture of punk, rap and dance music with lyrics commenting on current social issues. Masłowska’s writing is characterized by her ironic, pessimistic worldview and extraordinary linguistic power; as a postmodern writer she confronts, disturbs and subverts sacred ideas of selfhood and nationhood.

Paweł Świątek (Director) graduated from the directing department of the Kraków Drama School in Poland. He was a student of Kristian Lupa's and worked as an assistant with influential European directors, among them Renne Pollesch and Maja Kleczewska. Over 30 of the plays Paweł has directed have taken part in important international festivals like ‘Divine Comedy’ in Krakow, and ‘Warsaw Theatre Meeting’. He usually directs classical plays or contemporary adaptations of novels. Paweł is a multiple minister's scholarship recipient. For the last ten years, he has directed in the most notable theaters in Poland: National Old Theatre (Paw Królowej/Queen Peacock, Gyubal Wahazar), Słowacki’s Theatre (Wojna Polsko-Ruska/Polish-Russsian War, Botticelli), Szaniawski’s Theatre in Wałbrzych (Historical play: Narutowicz), Jaracza Theatre in Łódź (Książę Niezłomny/Steadfast Prince), Kochanowski’s Theatre in Opole (Sen Nocy Letniej/Midsummer Night's Dream‚ Szczęśliwe Dni/Happy Days) Impresario Theatre (Cappella Cracoviensis), and IMKA Theatre. Since 2017 Paweł has been a member of the Underground Theatre Wrocław Artistic Council. He prepared with Wrocław’s group an interactive performance based on Nicole Machiavelli entitled "Prince". He has also participated in international projects in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Essen.
