GWAR to Embark Upon the
"GWAR Eternal Tour 2014"

Chi, IL Live Shows On Our Radar
ChiIL Live Shows #ChiILPicksList

Thinking of ducking out of a day job early on Friday? As sad as we are that GWAR is now Brockieless, they're still well worth getting to Riot Fest early for (4:15 early in fact). They're kicking off a sick string of our favorites on the Rebel stage: GWAR, Clutch, Mastodon & Slayer!  Come rage with ChiIL Live Shows.

You just have to see GWAR to believe em. They defy definition. They're some of the most colorful metal monsters out there and so are their fans by the end of the show. Are you ready to get wet?! Some of my all time favorite original Riot Fest shots came from the aftermath of a GWAR set in 2012. I didn't want to risk my gear on the front lines, so I lurked stage right and caught all the crowd surfers as they emerged.

Been living in a cave? Not up on your recent GWARhistory? Here's our past coverage on our communal loss of a creative genius this past March:

MORE GWAR LORE & TOUR DATES:

Oderus is missing. Once the Scumdogs in GWAR finally notice this (it takes them a while to notice stuff) they will set off on a journey to find their departed brother using every resource available - including recruiting an ancient Scumdog warrior. GWAR will need the help from everyone, even the lowliest Bohab, as their enemies are plotting to take advantage of the hole in GWAR's ranks.

BalSac The Jaws of Death on The "GWAR Eternal Tour 2014" and what to expect:

"Dark clouds of war and ill omen have gathered around GWAR. In our hour of greatest peril, Oderus has left us and our enemies stand poised, ready to strike while they sense weakness. But we shall no longer cower in our Antarctic stronghold, awaiting Destiny's final blow. This Fall GWAR sets out on the most trying quest of our career. We shall scour our leader's favorite stomping ground, North America, leaving no city unsearched, no venue unraised, and no sheep unmolested. GWAR will venture to the depths of Hell or to the very end of Time itself, and though I fear what we may encounter out there, I know that we can never return home until we have the answer we seek: 'Where is Oderus Urungus?'"

GWAR fans have been mourning the loss of Dave Brockie, GWAR's founder and lead singer, since March. The "GWAR Eternal Tour 2014" gives them an opportunity to gather and share a bunch of feels as a community while experiencing the sickest band in this or any other world.

Jamison Land, Beefcake the Mighty's personal slave and bass tech:

"Dave was our friend and anchor for as far back as anyone can remember.  He's held us together, and sometimes he drove us apart.  He is our brother and we love him. Unlike a lot of prominent musicians, he was friends with all of the fans. He made GWAR fans feel special on a personal level.  The fans love Dave as much as we do and 'The GWAR Eternal Tour 2014' is our way of getting together and sharing that love."

The first leg of the tour will include direct support from Decapitated; the second leg will have direct support from Corrosion of Conformity.  American Sharks will open all shows.  The tour kicks off October 15th in Norfolk, VA and runs through December 13th in Baltimore, MD.  A complete list of dates can be found below.  Tickets go on sale this weekend.

Hail Oderus! Hail GWAR!

Team Spirit bring us another dose of comic relief with their video for "Surrender" from their upcoming debut LP Killing Time.  This time around, the band are shown as Crank Yankers reminiscent puppets who would do just about anything to have a hit song including sell their souls to the devil.  Suddenly, the band embarks in a shred-fest to prove to the adorably sinister devil that they are totally serious about their willingness to surrender their souls. The amazingly directed video makes its debut appropriately on AV Club.
The band's last video "Teenage Heart" is nominated for MTVU's The Freshman, where users can vote for the video they want to see get on air.  Vote here for "Teenage Heart" before polls close Friday, Sept. 12th at 2/1c.
After tours with Peace, Surfer Blood and Skaters, Team Spirit will return to the stage this Fall performing at Riot Fest in Chicago as well as a hometown album release show October 1st at Baby's All Right. The band also just announced a slew of New England tour dates with Alvvays.  Killing Time is due for release September 30th via Vice / Warner Bros.
Head over to AV Club for the world premiere of their video for "Surrender"!  Don't forget to vote for the band to be MTVU's The Freshman as the video that gets to go on air!
____________
More than just a frontman, Ayad Al-Adhamy plays the team captain. Literally shredding his way to guitar-hero status, the soul of Team Spirit is all about epic hooks, killer solos, crunchy licks, and home-town heroics. In a past life Ayad was the keyboard wiz behind Passion Pit's gushy synths until one day, rediscovering his first love, that six-string siren, he rallied like a frantic pep-squad and rocketed last years self-titled Team Spirit EP into the finals for the comeback-kids and punk rock parking lot tailgaters everywhere.
Calling upon teammates Kieren Smith (guitar, vocals, running back), Dan De Lara (bass, vocals, tackle), and Alex Russek (drums, fullback), Team Spirit are in position to slam-dunk their debut LP, Killing Time, dropping this fall. Standing on the shoulders of guitar greats like Chuck Berry and the Exploding Hearts, Team Spirit’s first full length is a lean, mean, shredding machine that will surely make September 30th when it comes out on VICE / Warner Bros Records a day to remember.
High on adrenaline and taking cues from the legends of pop guitar, Team Spirit run the gamut of introspective emotion and self-reflective rebellion, to teenage obsession and exuberant all-out high-school keggers. Team Spirit burst onto the field pom-pons waving; sound-tracking that bottom-of-the-ninth-full-count-last-ditch-all-or-nothing-no-guts-no-glory god-damn rock and roll and the end result is a sweat-soaked victory lap.

Press Quotes
"Even those who regularly spend their rent money on 7-inches don’t often come across a song that surges like “Teenage Heart,” the lead single from Team Spirit’s upcoming Killing Time. The album is coming this fall, but you have all summer to test the limits of your car speakers with this one. Take it for a test drive now." - Stereogum

""Teenage Heart" seems neater, crisper and more thoughtfully put together than anything on their previous release, but also keeps the band’s big, fast guitars and high-intensity fun in full swing. The largest growth can be seen in Al Adhamy’s vocal melody, which goes a long way in elevating this tune to possible hit status." - CMJ

"But for all the mania, South by Southwest can still amaze....One night, I went to see a very accomplished band on the back patio of a bar near Red River Street. As I made my way through the dark, sweaty room in front, I noticed an insistent sound and turned to see Team Spirit, a beery collection of punkish rockers having the musical time of their lives." - New York Times

Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar #ChiILPicksList

Check back with ChiIL Live Shows like we vote in Chi, IL... early and often. We'll be featuring a few acts that caught our eye... and ears. And some must see band we'll drop everything for.

Adele Stein, Ciscandra Nostalghia, Roy Gnan

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, we haven't seen Nostalghia live, but I must say we're intrigued enough to check 'em out. Other options in the 6pm Sat time slot are Wu Tang Clan, Dashboard Confessional, The Crombies & The Get Up Kids

One of the most exciting new bands to come along in some time.  If you're a fan of artists like Kate Bush, Bjork, NIN, the Knife, Mirah or post-apocalyptic gypsy punk, this is a don't-miss band.  Early supporters include Skrillex, Marilyn Manson and Amy Lee of Evanscence.  If you like discovering something exciting, daring, off-the-wall and maybe a little ahead of the curve, then this is the band to check out.

And yes. Yes we do dig post-apocalyptic gypsy punk, Siouxsie Sioux, NIN, Bjork and Kate Bush.

ABOUT NOSTALGHIA:
Nostalghia is comprised of vocalist/songwriter Ciscandra Nostalghia, keyboardist/ producer/drummer Roy Gnan, who met each other on Craig's List, and touring cellist Adele Stein.  With Gnan's BA in jazz performance and cache of instruments, computers and other electronic gear, combined with Ciscandra's artistic bravery that is the product of the collision of two entirely different worlds - Los Angeles and Tehran, Iran, they make provocative, uncompromising and cinematic music.  The band has been embraced by a wide variety of audiences, having shared the stage with artists including Jared Leto's 30 Seconds to Mars, Gogol Bordello, Green Day, The Orb, Serj Tankian, and Avenged Sevenfold. With Chrysalis, the band's debut album that was mixed by multi-Platinum producer/mixer Dave Fortman and released April 8 (110 Recordings/INgrooves), Nostalghia proves they are not your average alt/rock band.

**"...theatrical, poignant, unflinching and desperately meaningful.  Her name is Ciscandra Nostalghia and she's out of this f**king world." -
SYFFAL

"...one of the most original new artists on the music scene today,  A journey between light and dark, 'Chrysalis' has enough pop-like elements to push it forward, though with a noir and avant-garde framework...an artist with a vision and a unique style." - RockSubculture

"Euphoria meets rage on this chaotic, dramatic debut by Nostalghia.  FIVE STARS"  - Examiner

"Vocal splashes of Diamonda Galas, Kate Bush and Siouxsie Sioux, combined with the artistic freedom and sight of a Perry Farrell, Nostalghia are relevant, current and have their finger on the pulse of the future."  - PlaybackStL

INCOMING: Slayer Friday 8:45 #ChiILPicksList #RiotFest

Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar #ChiILPicksList

SLAYER
Friday, September 12
Rebel Stage
Onstage at 8:45PM

With loads of tough calls ahead for this weekend, like Slayer, Jane's Addiction & Rise Against all playing simultaneously... How DO you decide? Sometimes it's a no brainer. Or you follow your friends. Or you go with the band less likely to come back around on tour soon or the one you dig but haven't seen live.

Check back with ChiIL Live Shows like we vote in Chi, IL... early and often. We'll be featuring a few acts that caught our eye... and ears. And some must see band we'll drop everything for.

First up... our group is divided over Janes Vs. Slayer, but look these guys in the eye and tell em you're picking Perry... and things might get ugly. At this point Slayer's winning our vote.

L-R:  Gary Holt, Tom Araya, Kerry King, Paul Bostaph

Slayer has just entered the studio to record its first album since 2011's critically-acclaimed, Grammy-winning World Painted Blood This is an album of firsts - the band's first album without Jeff Hanneman, the first album to be released on the band's own label (through Nuclear Blast), and Slayer's first since 2001's God Hates Us All with returning drummer Paul Bostaph.

Slayer surprised its fans back in April by making a brand new song available as a free download - "Implode" - written by Kerry King.  You can check out "Implode" HERE.   The new album is expected out in early 2015.

For Chicago's RiotFest performance, Slayer will be joined by guitarist Gary Holt who continues to fill in for Hanneman.

ABOUT SLAYER:
The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot wrote that the five-time-nominated, two-time Grammy winning Slayer is "one of the great American rock bands of the last 30 years, forget about genre."  Their membership in "The Big Four" - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - the four bands that defined the thrash/metal genre - secures their place in music history.  Indeed, few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer brings to its live shows, having been named "Best Live Band" by numerous media outlets including RevolverSPIN, and Metal Hammer With songs that mirror the turmoil and aberrations of our society - God's terrifying global genocide, the chaos of our broken political system, chemical warfare, the hideous minds of serial killers, and the way-too-close proximity of world horrors that technology has brought us - Slayer remains crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the Mainstream. Slayer's founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2013, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in since.  Paul Bostaph, Slayer's drummer from 1992 to 2001, rejoined the band on a full-time basis in 2013.

ACT OUT OPENING: Highly Acclaimed Smokefall Returns to Goodman On The Mainstage 9/20

ENORMOUS CRITICAL AND POPULAR ACCLAIM CATAPULTS NOAH HAIDLE’S SMOKEFALL, “THE BEST OF CHICAGO THEATER IN 2013” (CHICAGO TRIBUNE), TO THE GOODMAN’S MAINSTAGE FOR AN ENCORE PRODUCTION,
DIRECTED BY ANNE KAUFFMAN

***THE ORIGINAL COMPANY—CATHERINE COMBS, ANNE FOGARTY, KATHERINE KEBERLEIN, GUY MASSEY, MIKE NUSSBAUM AND ERIC SLATER—RETURNS FOR THE ALBERT THEATRE OPENER, SEPTEMBER 20 – OCTOBER 26***

Last year, ChiIL Live Shows was blown away by Smokefall, at the press opening, and we were not alone. Critics and audiences alike raved about this stellar drama which broke ticket sales records and will now be remounted as a mainstage production to open the fall 2014 season.

Smokefall launches the Goodman’s All-New Fall, celebrating nine decades with new inspiration: three months of new American plays, each developed in the Goodman’s new play programs.

Exactly one year after its world premiere in the Owen Theatre, Noah Haidle’s Smokefall, directed by Anne Kauffman, makes its Albert Theatre debut—becoming the third production in Goodman Theatre’s 90-year history to transfer from the theater’s smaller stage to the mainstage in order for more audiences to experience an acclaimed new play.

An exploration of the power and fragility of love through three generations of family life, Smokefall in its debut set the record of highest number of individual tickets sold in Owen Theatre history, and the production topped the “Best of 2013” lists among major Chicago media. The original six-member company remains intact for the play’s Albert Theatre premiere—including Chicago favorite Mike Nussbaum as The Colonel, whose performance “just weeks from his 90th birthday…had my chin on the floor” (Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune) was hailed as “miraculous…so emblematic of the play’s homage to the life force itself…a rare treat” (Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times).

Smokefall runs September 20 – October 26 in the Albert Theatre (opening night is Monday, September 29). Tickets ($25-$81; subject to change) are on sale now at GoodmanTheatre.org/Smokefall, by phone at 312.443.3800 or at the box office (170 North Dearborn). The Goodman is grateful for the generosity of its production supporters, including Abbott Fund, the Sponsor Partner; the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, the Foundation Partner; and Mayer Brown, the Corporate Sponsor Partner.

Smokefall is an artistic triumph. From its auspicious beginnings to an outstanding fully-realized mainstage production, this project perfectly exemplifies what we hope to achieve in our new play development efforts,” said Artistic Director Robert Falls. “Noah’s voice is unique among American theater artists; his imagination, sense of playfulness and honest emotion are an unusual combination. To produce Smokefall again with the same fine company of artists is the rare opportunity to revisit, or experience for the first time, a singular ephemeral moment.”

Smokefall’s page-to-stage journey began in 2006 during Haidle’s production of Vigils at the Goodman, when he conceived and developed Local Time—a 12-play cycle spanning one 24-hour period in the life of a Midwestern family, each act named for the time in which it took place (11am to 1pm and 5 to 7pm, etc). Falls was drawn to the project and commissioned Haidle to develop it, including a workshop of three of the 12 plays in the Goodman’s New Stages festival. Working with the Goodman’s Director of New Play Development Tanya Palmer (for whom the play is dedicated), Haidle further reworked the project and ultimately created a single play—Smokefall, whose title refers to the time of day immediately before nightfall—that tackles thematic questions about the meaning of life and the nature of love and commitment. The Goodman’s 2013 world-premiere co-production with South Coast Repertory appeared in the Owen Theatre (October 5 – November 3) and was hailed as “achingly sad, transcendently lovely” (Chicago Sun-Times) “relentlessly honest and believable” (Chicago Tribune), “one of the best plays of the year” (New City) and “echoing of Wilder with a dram or two of whimsy” (Time Out Chicago).

“To do the play again with this remarkable group of people is a blessing in a really wonderful way,” said playwright Noah Haidle. “Annie has a true gift, and is one of the lights of her generation; she is as much a creator of this show as I am. And as a writer, I can’t imagine anyone supporting my work more than Bob Falls, Tanya Palmer and the entire Goodman.”

Change is in the air as Violet (Keberlein) prepares to bring twin boys into the world. Inside her womb, her unborn sons (Massey and Slater) contemplate life after birth, the fragility of love and the meaning of home, while outside her body her world is in transformation: her husband, Daniel (Slater) is making plans of his own, her father The Colonel (Nussbaum) is slipping into senility and her daughter, Beauty (Combs) has taken a vow of silence. In the third act, one of the twins—now an old man—reflects on his life and family when an unexpected visitor arrives. The design team includes Kevin Depinet (set), Lindsay Jones (sound), Ana Kuzmanic (costumes) and David Weiner (lighting). Joseph Drummond is the production stage manager and Briana J. Fahey is the stage manager. Tanya Palmer is the dramaturg for the production.

More Glimpses at Goodman’s All-New Fall, celebrating nine decades with new inspiration: (three months of new American plays, each developed in the Goodman’s new play programs.)

In the Owen is Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig’s The World of Extreme Happiness directed by Eric Ting, September 13 – October 12 (opening night is September 22). In addition, six new plays—three workshop productions and three staged readings, all free of charge—appear as part of the annual New Stages Festival in the Owen, October 29 – November 16, with a weekend for industry professionals taking place November 14-16 (titles and artists TBA).

The Goodman is grateful for the generosity of its New Work Sponsors, including The Davee Foundation, Major Supporter of the Expansion of New Stages; Time Warner Foundation, Lead Supporter of New Play Development; The Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation and the Pritzker-Pucker Foundation, Major Supporters of New Play Development;  The Glasser and Rosenthal Family, the  Scenemakers Board and the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, Supporters of New Work Development; The Joyce Foundation, Principal Support of Artistic Development and Diversity Initiatives; Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Festival Sponsor. Edelman is the Major Corporate Sponsor for the Owen Theatre Season.
