ACT OUT OPENING: STEPPENWOLF THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS THE WORLD-PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF HEAD OF PASSES 4/4

Performances of Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s highly anticipated world-premiere production of Head of Passes by ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney begin April 4. Inspired by the Biblical Book of Job, ensemble member Tina Landau directs following her acclaimed collaboration with McCraney for the The Brother/Sister Plays (2010), with a cast featuring ensemble members Alana Arenas, Jon Michael Hill (May 21 – June 9) and Tim Hopper with James T. Alfred, Kyle Beltran (April 4 – May 19), Chris Boykin, Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Glenn Davis, Ron Cephas Jones and Jacqueline Williams. Head of Passes begins previews April 4, 2013 (Opening Night is April 14, 2013) and runs through June 9, 2013 in Steppenwolf’s Downstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St). In anticipation of her birthday, Shelah’s family and friends gather at her home in the Head of Passes—–the mysterious shifting marshlands at the mouth of the great Mississippi River. As the guests appear, so do ghosts from the past, and Shelah’s convictions about her life begin to dissolve, along with her home in the Louisiana rain. Ensemble members Tarell Alvin McCraney and Tina Landau team up again for this wise, warm world-premiere drama about faith, family and finding your place in the world.

Head of Passes is intriguing in both its content and form—or rather, in the way that the form moves us into the heart of the play's intensifying interrogation of faith,” comments Artistic Director Martha Lavey. “The divine intervention in our lives may come to us in surprising garb and speak to us the language of humility. The membrane between this world and the unseen world may be porous. We must endure our doubt, we must endure not knowing.  Somewhere in that, is our faith.”

The cast of Head of Passes features ensemble members Alana Arenas as Cookie, Jon Michael Hill as Crier (May 21 – June 9), and Tim Hopper as Dr. Anderson with James T. Alfred as Spencer, Kyle Beltran as Crier (April 4 – May 19), Chris Boykin as Angel/Construction Worker, Cheryl Lynn Bruce as Shelah, Glenn Davis as Aubrey, Ron Cephas Jones as Creaker, and Jacqueline Williams as Mae.

The production team for Head of Passes includes: David Gallo (scenic design), Collette Pollard (associate scenic design), Toni Leslie James (costume design), Scott Zielinski (lighting design) and Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen (sound design and original music). TONIGHT: Dueling Caesars In More Ways Than One



ACT OUT OPENING:

Beware the Ides of March indeed!   (That was March 15th, for those of you wondering...  an infamous line from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and thought to be his assassination date.   In lucky 2013, Chi-town has not one but TWO productions of Julius Caesar currently playing.   Babes With Blades dueling Julius was in previews and Chicago Shakespeare's version was well into their run for the Ides of March.    

ChiIL Live Shows will be there for opening night tonight, and we can't wait.    They're one of our local favorites for sure.   I've been a sucker for stage combat since I took college level classes in fencing, and stage fighting as part of my theatre/pr/marketing degree at Miami of Ohio.   

As far as this Julius goes, Babes With Blades is doing an all female version...fair play turnabout for all the years Shakespearian women were played by men!   We've been impressed for years by their creative staging, and adept casts.   We'll have a full review up shortly.

Barbara Lhota's play Echo is a Semifinalist for the 2013 Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference.  The play has also been selected for the Athena Project Festival in Denver, Colorado, March 14-31.  The play has a one-in-four chance of full production by the Athena Project in 2014. 

Kimberly Logan is super-excited to be a newly-minted Artistic Associate with Stage Left Theatre.  After playing as Brutus in BWBTC's production of Julius Caesar, she will be appearing as Jan Jan in Fight Girl Battle World with Infusion Theatre (5/14 - 6/16).

New York Voices - one of the premier jazz vocal groups at work today - celebrates their 25th anniversary and the release of their new Palmetto Records' CD New York Voices Live with the WDR Big Band Cologne in concert on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the St. Charles High School Auditorium, 255 Red Gate Road, St. Charles, IL. Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. with an opening set by the St. Charles Vocal Jazz Workshop.  Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students in advance; $25 at the door.

The concert is part of The New York Voices Jazz Festival at St. Charles North, a non-competitive invitational event open to high school and college vocal jazz groups from around the nation. A total of six high schools and six colleges will perform a 20-minute set for members of the New York Voices to be followed by a separate 30-minute clinic with one member. 

On their new CD, the Grammy Award winning vocal quartet teams with Germany's acclaimed WDR Big Band Cologne for the vocal ensemble's first full live album to be released on March 5.  New York Voices Live with the WDR Big Band Cologne presents new material and vintage favorites in richly colored big-band arrangements by lauded veteran Michael Abene. The live album resulted from a 2008 concert in Cologne, Germany, that was recorded as part of 20th-anniversary touring by the vocal quartet of Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge. Abene conducts the ace WDR  (Western German Radio) Big Band in a program of freshly conceived pop standards, artful New York Voices originals, beloved songs by Paul Simon and Annie Lennox, and such hip jazz evergreens as Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments."

New York Voices Live with the WDR Big Band Cologne includes three songs new to the New York Voices discography: a jazz vision of Annie Lennox's pop hit "Cold," a swinging update of the 1920s Broadway tune "Love Me or Leave Me" and a virtuoso a cappella take on Lerner & Lowe's "Almost Like Being in Love." The concert recording was preceded by a luxurious three rehearsals with Abene and the WDR Big Band, imbuing the performances with seamless ease and energized confidence. "The concert was a blast - you can hear that in the recording," says Peter Eldridge of New York Voices. "The WDR Big Band is full of great players, who can get in deep with an incredible range of music. People have always remarked on the energy of New York Voices live - and that's what this album captures in full for the first time, I think. The songs are a mix of old and new - which is apt as we come up on our 25th anniversary."

Highlights of the album include that gorgeous take on Oliver Nelson's early-'60s instrumental classic "Stolen Moments," with the lyrics of Mark Murphy. There is a virtuoso rendition of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and a hard-swinging "Darn That Dream," as well as two numbers reprised from the group's 1998 RCA studio set New York Voices Sing the Songs of Paul Simon: "Baby Driver" and "I Do It for Your Love." Then there are two originals: the moody, mellifluous "The World Keeps You Waiting" by Eldridge and Laura Kinhan; and the Chick Corea-influenced showpiece "The Sultan Fainted" by Eldridge and Meader.

New York Voices Live with the WDR Big Band Cologne reunites New York Voices with arranger-conductor Michael Abene, who produced the vocal group's very first studio album, released by GRP in 1989. Music director and principal arranger-conductor of the WDR Big Band since 2003, the Brooklyn-born Abene has a resume marked by stints with the bands of Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and Mel Lewis, as well as work with singers from Liza Minnelli to B.B. King to Patti Austin. He has also composed works for Paquito D'Rivera and Holland's Metropole Jazz Orchestra.

 "Michael has a certain expressive angularity to his writing, but his arrangements swing so hard - there's a real earthiness to the sounds he gets," explains New York Voices member Darmon Meader, co-producer of the album. "Mike is an old-school cat who has really lived this idiom and really knows his band, stimulating the players with the intricacies and blends in his charts, the challenging lines. For what's ostensibly a vocal album, the big band is featured extensively - which is very exciting. And we function in the arrangements almost like another section of the band, with our four-part harmony similar to what a sax section would do. This album really reinforces the idea of New York Voices being connected to the lineage of instrumental jazz."

Celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2013, New York Voices is the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great jazz vocal groups that have come before, such as Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Singers Unlimited and Manhattan Transfer, the foursome of Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Time Out Chicago has said of New York Voices: "We dare say there may be no better way to understand the wit and wink of jazz harmony than via these Voices."

From 1989 to 1994, New York Voices released four albums on the GRP label: New York Voices, Hearts of Fire, What's Inside and The Collection. The group has also starred on albums by the Count Basie Orchestra, Paquito D'Rivera and Jim Hall, among others. In 1998, the quartet released the RCA album New York Voices Sing the Songs of Paul Simon. Of that hit album, All Music Guide says: "The arrangements are brighter and brassier than Simon's originals, but there's a real charm to the performances that makes it a thoroughly entertaining experience." In 2001, New York Voices issued the Concord album Sing Sing Sing, featuring the group's spin on the great big-band songbook. The Los Angeles Times said of that album: "The title track quickly lays down what to expect from the balance of the program: complex, interwoven vocal lines, interactive improvising and brisk ensemble accompaniment. And revivalist swing fans - both players and listeners - would do well to check out the Voices' capacity to bring a contemporary quality to classic material without sacrificing the essence of either."

The interests of New York Voices are rooted in jazz, but the members often incorporate Brazilian, R&B, classical and pop influences. In recent years, the group has been called upon by the Boston Pops to bring a new edge to the pops orchestra circuit across the U.S. In 2007, New York Voices released the album A Day Like This via the MCG Jazz label. The quartet mixed things up again, ranging from Brazilian sounds and swinging trio numbers to a couple of big-band romps and a handful of original songs by the members. New York Voices have appeared on the world's great stages, from Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Blue Note (in New York and Japan) to the opera houses of Vienna and Zurich, plus the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

YUNA Performs “Shine Your Way” Duet with OWL CITY on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”





This past Thursday, one of Verve Music Group’s newest signings, YUNA, graced the stage of the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” marking her second national television performance.  The Malaysian-born songstress performed her duet with multi-platinum recording artist OWL CITY, “Shine Your Way.”  The track is the theme song for Dream Works Animation’s 3D comedy film, THE CROODS, and the performance can be seen here.

In a considerably short amount of time, YUNA has become an internationally recognized name with this past year marking her a breakout in North America.  YUNA released her self-titled, full-length debut and received critical acclaim from numerous press outlets. Rolling Stone championed her as having, “certified indie cred and massive pop potential,” and Complex described her as, “a deeply refreshing addition to America’s musical landscape.”  She’s performed on national television, was a finalist for MTV Iggy’s “Best New Band In The World,” has had multiple songs featured in movies and on soundtracks, and played both Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo.

Meet New York City’s fastest-rising-all-girl-indie-bubblegum-group --- SUPERCUTE!

Rachel Trachtenburg (of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players) founded SUPERCUTE! in 2009 with friend Julia Cumming. Trachtenburg, veteran of the indie rock scene at 19, has been playing drums in her family band since she was six years old. Ever since she was a kid, she had dreams of creating her own girl group when she got older. This dream came true in 2009; SUPERCUTE! supported UK artist Kate Nash on a U.S tour, followed by a 11 country European tour in 2010, wowing audiences with what the New York Times calls “incisive, tidy, clever bubblegum pop.”

SUPERCUTE! writes and performs amazingly witty, catchy and refreshing songs on such subjects as animal rights (“The Pigeon Song”), and their joy for sweets (“Candy City” and “Dumb Dumbs”). They also have a knack for brilliantly re-framing ‘70s rock classics such as Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” and Led Zeppelin’s “Misty Mountain Hop”. Their video for “Not To Write About Boys” has been spotlighted by well-known websites Stereogum and Boing Boing. The girls of SUPERCUTE! raised their own money via KickStarter to record their first full length album produced by Kate Nash in London. The album showcases the dreamy, psychedelic, dark direction that their sound has evolved into, incorporating complex instrumentation and harmonies that have become one of the group’s signatures. The combination of SUPERCUTE!’s underground attitude and Nash’s pop intellect created the album “DON’T PoP MY BUBBLE’’ to be released on Secret Code Records distributed by The Frenchkiss Label Group.

Since SUPERCUTE!'s inception, the band has created quite the stir, garnering an impressive array of raves from respected media outlets like The New York Times, The New York Post, Time Out New York and The New Yorker. They’ve been blogged about by Teen Vogue, featured in a full 2-page spread in Bust, and were named Deli Magazine's "Band of the Month" for April 2010. They have played alongside artists such as Adam Green, The Shaggs, John Spencer Blues Explosion, The N’ere Dowells, Ira Glass, Janeane Garofalo, R. Stevie Moore, and Jeffrey Lewis. They have also performed at SXSW, the CMJ conference, at the 92nd Street, and at such big venues as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York’s Bowery Ballroom, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Minneapolis’s First Avenue and the Los Angeles’s El Rey Theater.

In the spring of 2013, SUPERCUTE! will tour the east coast with Kate Nash, premiering the tunes off their new album. There are plans of more touring when the album is released June 11th 2013.

This fresh urban take on Shakespeare’s tragedy returns home for a limited engagement on the heels of an acclaimed world premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, and wildly successful tours to Germany and Edinburgh. 

The CST-commissioned hip-hop adaptation of Othello is spun out and lyrically rewritten over original beats by The Q Brothers—America’s leading re-interpreters of Shakespeare through hip-hop (Funk It Up About Nothin’, The Bomb-itty of Errors).

As part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad’s ‘Globe to Globe’ festival at Shakespeare’s Globe, Othello: The Remix received its world premiere as one of 37 companies from around the world presenting Shakespeare’s entire canon, each performed in a different language. It was the only production in the festival from North America and was greeted with critical acclaim and sold-out houses. The European tour continued to Germany’s Shakespeare Festival im Globe Neuss and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where the Musical Theatre Matters Awards honored the production with Best Musical and Best Lyrics Awards, and the Stage Awards for Acting Excellence nominated the company for Best Ensemble Award. High praise for the production included a five-star London review from The Telegraph, exclaiming “the show is a triumph from beginning to end,” and The Guardian hailing the production as “well-paced, sophisticated, and at times, very funny.”


The Q Brothers, GQ and JQ, are siblings born and raised in Chicago, who started their professional careers in the off Broadway hit, The Bomb-itty of Errors. Othello: The Remix, written and directed with music by the Q Brothers, is the first Shakespeare tragedy and second collaboration with CST Creative Producer Rick Boynton. Boynton was also involved in the creation of the Q Brothers’ award-winning CST commission, Funk It Up About Nothin’, which received critical acclaim in its world premiere at Chicago Shakespeare and subsequent international tour to New York, Australia and the UK. In addition to the Q Brothers, the cast of Othello: The Remix includes Jackson Doran and Postell Pringle and DJ Clayton Stamper. Shakespeare's story of Othello...
Desdemona, a young aristocrat of Venice, has just eloped with Othello, a hired general in the Venetian army—and a Moor. Roderigo, lovesick for Desdemona, is assured by Iago that he, too, harbors hatred for the Moor, who has promoted Cassio over him as lieutenant. Desdemona’s father, Brabantio, seeks the full justice of Venetian law, but the Duke is concerned with pressing affairs of state: the Turks threaten Venetian interests in Cyprus, and the Moor’s service is required. 


Othello prepares to embark for Cyprus with his new bride. Iago plots to make Othello believe that the young Venetian officer Cassio is Desdemona’s lover. Ensnaring Cassio in a drunken brawl, Iago looks on as Othello predictably dismisses his new lieutenant. Iago urges Cassio to seek Desdemona’s aid in recovering Othello’s favor, then suggests to Othello that his wife’s interest in Cassio’s misfortunes may signify her infidelity. 

Demanding “ocular proof,” Othello is convinced when his first gift to Desdemona, a handkerchief, is misplaced and, with help from Iago’s wife Emilia, ends up in Cassio’s possession. For service to his general, Iago is appointed Othello’s new lieutenant. Stunned by her husband’s accusations, Desdemona pleads with Othello—first for his compassion, then for her life. As Emilia comes to understand her husband’s crimes, she is murdered for the truth she dares to speak. Tormented by remorse and grief, Othello takes his own life.
 


...is remixed into...
Against all odds, MC Othello escapes the ghetto by giving rhythm and voice to the stories of the people in his hood. As he rises to the top of the music industry, he is living proof of the “American dream.” Othello falls in love with Desdemona, a beautiful singer whose vocals add the final piece that catapults him to stardom. 


They marry, despite her aristocratic father’s disapproval, and are sent by Loco Vito, the CEO of the record label, on a national tour. Other members of the crew include Cassio, a glitzy pop music rapper, and Iago, a hardcore underground lyricist and hip hop purist. Othello decides to release Cassio’s album next in an effort to reach a wider audience. 

Angered by this decision, Iago vows to take Othello down. He enlists the help of Roderigo, the nerdy, socially awkward lighting designer on tour—and in love with Desdemona. With a promise to win him the heart of the one he loves, Iago steals Roderigo’s money and sells him on his plan to remove Cassio from the group. Meanwhile, Iago continues to plant seeds of jealousy in Othello about a fabricated affair between Desdemona and Cassio. 

Further upset by Cassio’s bizarre behavior at an important album release event, Othello kicks him out of the group. Iago convinces Roderigo to kill Cassio. Roderigo bungles the murder attempt and Iago, worried that his plan will be uncovered, kills Roderigo himself. Othello, now on the brink of insanity, flies into a jealous rage and murders his love, Desdemona. Iago’s wife Emilia enters to find her friend dead, and reveals the truth of her husband’s evil plot. In the wake of this overpowering news, Othello takes his own life.
