Since its 2006 Chicago debut, “Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah” has continued to reinvigorate audiences while paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This show provides our community with a truly unique way to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, not only because of Dr. King’s deep love of gospel and jazz music but the way in which it represents Chicago’s diversity in both performers and audience members,” said Executive Director Brett Batterson. “It’s incredible to see an entire audience brought to their feet with such vigor and excitement. It is a true celebration of music, and of a man so important to United States history.”

Ingeniously re-imagined to embrace black musical tradition, the aptly named ‘Too Hot to Handel’ proved that even the most revered classical masterpieces can be taught to swing.” (Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich). Mixing gospel and jazz stylings, “Too Hot” brings music lovers of all genres to their feet. Brought to life onstage by 200 Chicago musicians including 150 voices from the citywide “Too Hot” Choir under the direction of Old St. Patrick’s Church music director Bill Fraher, and a 50-piece symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble under the baton of conductor Suzanne Mallare Acton. “Too Hot to Handel” then brings the powerhouse voices of Rodrick Dixon, Alfreda Burke and Karen Marie Richardson to lead the group through the incredible music that fills the Auditorium Theatre. The show is enhanced through LED screens that will not only display historical photos of Martin Luther King Jr. but will also capture the performers and audience members during the performance. Video Production made possible through the generosity of Bill & Shelley Farley.

In tandem with “Too Hot to Handel,” the Auditorium’s Department of Creative Engagement utilizes innovative programming to involve the community by teaching Chicago students about Martin Luther King Jr. and the power of music and celebration. The Blood of Power Tour #Death Metal

ChiIL Live Shows--Dying Fetus LIVE at Reggies in Chicago 12/17/12

Reggie's was rockin for Death Metal Monday, when Dying Fetus came through Chi-town the 17th.   It was a cathartic, high energy show and the band did not disappoint.

Self-reliance and musical integrity are two principles which Dying Fetus have always lived by. The band formed in 1991, during the height of the death metal explosion of the early '90s, and have matured into one of the premiere extreme death metal/grind-core acts ever to come out of the massive global metal underground. The band is recognized worldwide as a prime example of songwriting perfection, combining an innovative mix of technical virtuosity and catchy song structures to create the ultimate blend of death metal, hardcore, and grindcore. Intensity unparalleled, and musical power unrivaled, they are the leaders of the new generation in extreme music. Their sounds and lyrics are a brutal response to the everyday stress and pressures of reality in our age, while also providing the ultimate escape from it.

You know it's a sweet show when they hit the lights at the end and people are crawling from the pit bleeding and grinning.

The power of blood indeed...

Some next gen metal maniacs were there, takin' advantage of the all ages admission and early show time.

ChiIL Live Shows had a video interview set up with Dying Fetus drummer, Trey, but they bumped it up a half hour at the last minute so we had to scrap it, since we were already on a prior shoot.

We still managed to shoot stills and we'll catch them for interviews the next time through town.

They tour pretty ruthlessly and I'm sure they'll be back around in the near future.   The band ends this headlining tour the 23rd, then they're back out again in January opening for Hatebreed.   Click here for the lineup and tour dates.

(Tomato's House of Rock). Each week on the series, a new special guest is invited to Tomato's House of Rock, to discuss their journey in the music business, provide educational tips for the growing artists, and round off the show with a kick-ass jam with the kids.

On this edition, founding DYING FETUS guitarist John Gallagher stops by to talk about his band's beginnings, how the band name was picked, fun anecdotes about dealing with customs, scary moments on stage and the meaning behind their infamous classic, "Kill Your Mother, Rape Your Dog." John ends the show jamming with the THOR students on the famous track.
