INCOMING: Alice Merton To Play Chicago's Bottom Lounge 4/26; Mint LP Out Now Via Mom+Pop Music

Alice Merton Plays Bottom Lounge On 4/26
Mint LP Out Now Via Mom+Pop Music

Alice has announced Summer tour dates with Young The Giant and Fitz & The Tantrums. Last month, Alice released a new documentary centered around the making of her LP 'Mint'.  The LP was released on 1/18 on Mom+Pop Music. Critical acclaim has been coming in for the LP: Jon Pareles of the New York Times praised the LP in his weekly column. Nylon's Allison Stubblebine said,"...if I did have to assert one quality of Merton’s that I think will grow more and more evident over time, it’s the weird, the quirky, the way that she leaves mistakes in her songs, making them what they are, flawed and perfect, all at once." Town + Country also raved saying, "Alice Merton is About to Have the Breakout Album of 2019."

Her single “Funny Business” is officially Top 20 on AAA, approaching Top 15 and officially Top 30 at Alternative radio.  Alice's video for "Funny Business" was shared on Refinery29. Along with the video, the site she also did an exclusive interview.  The track originally premiered on Nylon.  Along with the song premiere, Alice also sat down with Nylon and did an interview where she talked about both the song and the new album. Last year, Alice's breakout single "No Roots" was certified gold by the RIAA.

Amazon Music listeners can simply ask, "Alexa play "Funny Business" (Acoustic) by Alice Merton" in the Amazon Music app for iOS and Android and on Alexa-enabled devices. In addition to the new track, Amazon Music listeners can access hundreds of Amazon Originals featuring both emerging and established artists across numerous genres, available to stream and purchase only on Amazon Music.

Alice will be embarking on a U.S. tour in April around her new LP Mint. This tour will include dates at Coachella. She then will return to the U.S. this summer playing dates with Young The Giant and Fitz & The Tantrums. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.

ALICE MERTON BIOGRAPHY:
Alice Merton wants to know why you're being so damn serious.

The chart-topping singer-songwriter wrote her most euphoric, pop-friendly track to date at a time when critics and hot-takers seemed intent on sucking the joy out of everything.

“I kept getting asked in interviews, ‘Do you think you’re gonna be a one-hit wonder?’” Alice Merton laughs. “I went into the studio and said, ‘Music is supposed to be fun! We don’t write songs to be hits, we write songs so we feel good.’”

Out came "Why So Serious," with Alice Merton shimmying circles around the noise and the nonsense with parade of jubilant hooks. It's the closing salvo on MINT, an 11-track cavalcade of such powerhouses, and a long-awaited, hard-fought triumph of a debut album (out Jan. 18 on Mom + Pop Music). There are anthems for self-reliance, growing up, lashing out, and finding home in a whirlwind of FaceTime conversations and passport stamps.

“Some talk about growing up and moving around a lot,” the English-German artist (who once moved 12 times over 24 years) observes, “But a lot of others discuss the struggles we’ve had with starting a label, the feeling of trying to prove yourself to everyone.” While studying at University of Popular Music and Music Business, Alice Merton founded Paper Plane Records Int. with her best friend and manager Paul Grauwinkel, while crafting songs alongside co-writer and producer Nicolas Rebscher. Label and radio reps scoffed at “No Roots” - It’s a minute too long! Take the guitars out! - but by the time it topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in the U.S. and amassed over 142 million YouTube streams, naysayers turned to supporters.

Long safe from those one-hit wonder jabs (the fiery “Lash Out” followed “No Roots” as an alt radio staple) MINT finds Alice Merton progressing from the owner of a handful of hits to an accomplished album artist. On “Funny Business,” she ventures outside her usual circle of collaborators and enlists Grammy-nominated producer John Hill (co-producer and co-writer of Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still”) for a swaggering, bass-groovy joyride that's ready to duke it out with "Why So Serious" for the title of Alice Merton's next big hit. It also doubles as her own personal dos and don'ts checklist: "I don't break hearts / I don't do funny business / I just ride in cars / And watch them get hung up in it." Seriously, why so serious?

For fans who have been there from the start, MINT is the full-length affirmation; for newcomers, it's a virtual greatest hits of two globetrotting years spent living, adapting, and creating. With extensive touring and one of 2019’s standout debuts on the way, Alice Merton’s metamorphosis from Hype Machine and Shazam sensation to bona fide stardom is starting to… take root. She has gone platinum in six countries, amassed over 261 million global streams, sold out headlining dates in New York and Washington, D.C., and has been championed by the likes of Billboard magazine, Rolling Stone magazine, Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show, James Corden's Late Late Show, and Live With Kelly and Ryan. "It feels really relieving,” she affirms. “I’m excited we can finally put these songs out and even start working on the next chapter.”

INCOMING: FLIPPER With David Yow (the Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid) and Rachel Thoele (Mud Women, Frightwig)

Chi, IL Live Shows on our radar
6/28 - Chicago, IL - Reggie’s

FLIPPER
CELEBRATING 40 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH
NORTH AMERICAN + EUROPEAN TOUR

DATES KICK OFF APRIL 12 IN LOS ANGELES AT THE REGENT THEATER

PLAYING PUNK ROCK BOWLING FESTIVAL MAY 24 IN LAS VEGAS

Original members, Ted Falconi and Steve DePace will be joined by David Yow (the Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid) and Rachel Thoele (Mud Women, Frightwig)

Seminal punk band Flipper are celebrating 40 years of being a band this year with a North American tour to be followed by dates in the UK and Europe. The shows kick off on April 12 in Los Angeles at the Regent Theater. Further, Flipper will support Killing Joke for their Punk Rock Bowling Festival show on May 24 at Las Vegas’ DLVEC 3rd St. Stage. All dates are listed below.

Original members, Ted Falconi and Steve DePace will be joined by David Yow (the Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid) and Rachel Thoele (Mud Women, Frightwig). Further, along the way Flipper will be inviting special guests to join them on stage. The band also has plans to head into the studio with various musicians along the tour. More details as they confirm!

Rolling Stone included Flipper’s 1982 debut album Album - Generic Flipper in their list of “40 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time” and of the album’s “hit” song “Sex Bomb” Stereogum has noted, “what looks on paper like the most annoying song on the planet ends up sounding infectious beyond the sum of its parts.” SF Weekly dubbed them “easily the most influential” band to rise out of the “vibrant San Francisco punk scene” and Henry Rollins has described them as “heavier than anything.”

Flipper formed in 1979 by former members of San Francisco punk bands Negative Trend, Sleepers and SST/Rad Command. Instead of following the pack with “loud and fast” they instead opted for slow dirges that Black Flag would emulate a few years later. Flipper would go on to also heavily influence the likes of Nirvana (Kurt Cobain used to wear a DIY Flipper t-shirt) and the Melvins a decade later. The lineup has always included DePace and Falconi, and long time vocalist Bruce Loose, who recently retired due to a spinal cord injury. Yow joined the band on their last tour and Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic played and recorded with them from 2006-2009. Flipper has released 4 studio albums, 5 live albums and four singles.

Flipper was one of the most visceral bands in rock 'n' roll, heavily distorted punk-rock stripped to its grinning skull, slowed down enough to make your skin crawl, as antagonistic as it could possibly manage, and its shows in the early and mid-'80s were among the most erratic and enervating imaginable, no two alike.  The Los Angeles Times

Gang of Four February 2019 Tour Dates; New Album HAPPY NOW Out March 29

New Album HAPPY NOW
Out March 29
Released through Pledge Music

First Single "Paper Thin" Out Now
Released through AWAL

“We have short memories, maybe the world has not changed so much. Polarization is not new. We had an idea that we moved forward with; but now it’s crumbled and turned to dust. What was solid is now Paper Thin. Once, we could shut the door but we can no longer, the outside world will get to us, constantly, all the time.” - Andy Gill Gang of Four

Pioneering post-punk band, the GANG OF FOUR were formed by guitarist Andy Gill in the bricolage punk rock fallout culture of late seventies Leeds, UK – a place where art was a mirror and guitars were machine guns.

They redesigned rock in the punk aftermath, taking the incendiary energy of the form and crisscrossing it with funk, stripping away the baggage of rock excess and creating a new stripped-down music that was full of energy, heavy grooves, shrapnel guitars and politically charged lyrics matching the harshness of the times.

Gang of Four bounced around the music business releasing a series of albums including 1979’s universally lauded ENTERTAINMENT (which celebrates its 40th birthday in 2019) and they have been a direct inspiration to a diverse selection of bands, from the surrounding post-punk generation to the big bands that followed. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, INXS, R.E.M., U2, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana and Massive Attack have all spoken of their debt to Gang of Four.

More recently, the band’s influence has become almost universal — now everybody talks about Gang of Four. From Franz Ferdinand to St Vincent, from Sleater-Kinney and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem to Nine Inch Nails and IDLES, today's leading creators have GO4's influence and imprint all over them. The band is also reaching an urban audience with Frank Ocean sampling them on his latest album and Pharrell name-checking the band in his interviews.

Gang of Four have released a series of albums that emphatically demonstrate their capacity for invention and energy. The line-up now includes bassist Thomas McNeice — who joined in 2008 — and John ‘Gaoler’ Sterry whose fervent vocals sit perfectly alongside Gill’s six-string invention.

Urgent, dangerous and intense with their prolific bass sound, the Gang of Four are, somehow, one of the best young bands in Britain. Except this band is built around its founder and esteemed guitarist Andy Gill, whose pursuit of perfection has left him as the gang of one. Gill is as vital as ever at the heart of the project.

Track-listing

One True Friend
Ivanka - My Name's On It
Don't Ask Me
Change the Locks
I'm A Liar
White Lies
Paper Thin
Lucky (Bonus Track)

The upcoming album Happy Now is the perfect synthesis between a modern take on the classic GO4 sound — a pop touch with those timeless angular guitar lines and fractured rhythms — with a fast forward vision. It’s this combination of electronics and the jagged guitar lines pursuing 21st century grooves that achieves a striking balance between the band’s fundamental sound and its restless embrace of the now and the new. Exemplified by the first single, the pulsating "Paper Thin," the result is a body of anthemic songs of modern confusion, and Happy Now a record for our times.

Listen to "Paper Thin" here.

Standout cuts such as opener "Toreador," "Change The Locks," "Ivanka: My Name’s On It," "White Lies" and "I’m A Liar" capture the full energy of their live show which is seriously good. McNeice’s bass is fierce, sharp, full of post-punk grind. He looks sharp and lean, dangerous as well, with his suicide runs across the stage, all the while locking in tight with the dark energy groove provided by Jonny Finnigan and Tobias Humble. Meanwhile Gaoler is delivering his impassioned vocals, complemented by Gill’s steel-eyed resolve.

The 2019 Gang of Four are glorious. They sound enormous. They are exciting and have more than a whiff of danger and revolution about them. Gill radiates intensity and still plays the guitar like it’s sparking with electricity, and his band of young droogs add a youthful exuberance and energy that electrifies the songs and makes Gang of Four a thrilling exercise in reinvention.

Gang of Four’s new single ‘Paper Thin’ is released through AWAL on January 18, 2019 and is available on all major streaming platforms. The new studio album Happy Now is released on March 29, 2019 and is available now on pre-order in all formats from Pledge https://bit.ly/2QHMLXa

NEW RELEASES: WHOLE NEW LIFE, REVEREND HORTON HEAT'S FIRST ALBUM IN NEARLY 5 YEARS OUT NOW!

REVEREND HORTON HEAT RELEASE
FIRST ALBUM IN NEARLY 5 YEARS
WHOLE NEW LIFE

DEBUT NEW VIDEO “HOG TYIN’ WOMAN”
Midnight, Texas TV Performance Airs December 7
On Tour Now

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, we're celebrating the new album release. We got a press preview link and it's been in heavy rotation on our play list this week. I'm shooting live show photos at REVEREND HORTON HEAT'S Chicago Metro show as well as reviewing the new tunes, so check back soon for our full recap.

Horton's Holiday Hayride is coming to a stage near YOU and features an amazing lineup! Including Reverend Horton HeatJunior Brown Fan PageThe Blasters and Big Sandy of Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys

The foot-stomping hellfire roots of REVEREND HORTON HEAT’s rock 'n' roll stylings are louder than ever with Whole New Life, the brand new album available worldwide today. The band also delivers the second video in the form of the sexy and sultry “Hog Tyin’ Woman.”

As the album hits shelves, the Texas rebels have traveled thousands of miles, playing 13 countries in front of over one million people since the release of 2014’s Rev. Watch the band perform “Hog Tyin’ Woman” on the NBC thriller Midnight, Texas on December 7.

Watch “Hog Tyin’ Woman” Music Video:

“It’s the most positive album I’ve ever done, admits ringleader Jim ‘Reverend’ Heath. “Some of my stuff in the past was dark, maybe too dark. I guess I’m not the awful vindictive jerk I thought I was!”

Recording the album in their hometown of Dallas, Heath says that “Creating Whole New Life brought out something more positive in my storytelling and guitar playing. I also saw a vocal coach to reach notes unheard to the average fan. It's got some Southern feel to it, a bit of gruff and a crooning style to it. Write what you know, that’s what they tell ya in school, right?”

The artwork was created by a pair of rock ‘n’ roll sisters called The Mad Twins, Olya and Vira. These creative designers from the Ukraine also animated ‘Hardscrabble Woman,’ the bands final video from the previous album. “Jim Heath is a real old-school gentleman with a precise taste of 1950’s retro style and an excellent sense of humor,” Vira professes. “Jim gave us a good guide of the songs meanings lyrically and musically so we visualized a 1950’s color style from that era. Call it globalism but isn’t it wild that two Ukrainian female artists are doing American 50’s graphics for a Texas band thirty years into their career? The design, art and music of that time are so powerful because people were doing it all by hand - paintings, clothing, cars, instruments - there were simple and naïve emotions, less vulgarity, straight honesty and sincere love. All that makes up the musical tornado of REVEREND HORTON HEAT.”

Undoubtedly one of the most important and popular rockabilly artists of all time, the legendary Texas troop have genre-hopped their fan base in front of audiences from the Sex Pistols, Johnny Cash, Soundgarden, ZZ Top, Motorhead and tons of other heavy-hitters.

“This tour started around 1986,” Heath chuckles dryly. Performing nearly 200 shows a year, REVEREND HORTON HEAT officially kicked off the Horton’s Holiday Hayride Tour on November 27 in Omaha, NE and will wrap up the year in Birmingham, AL on December 22. As more riotous shows are booked for 2019, Heath cracks, “I’m afraid I’m on the Willie Nelson retirement program, which means I’ll never retire!”

NEW RELEASE: Dead Can Dance Album Dionysus Out November 2nd

through [PIAS] Recordings

Check out their new recording ACT II - The Mountain -

DIONYSUS
ACT I :
Sea Borne
Liberator of Minds
Dance of the Bacchantes

ACT II
The Mountain
The Invocation
The Forest
Psychopomp

Having previously announced details of their new album Dionysus, Australian duo DEAD CAN DANCE share new recording ACT II - The Mountain which premieres via Pitchfork.

The follow-up to 2012’s Anastasis and taking its lead from the myth of Dionysus, the new work consists of two acts across seven movements representing the various facets of the legend - conveyed via an array of folk instrumentation,  field recordings  and chants. Its inspiration drawn from across the world, Dead Can Dance continue to harvest an intriguing trajectory both in spiritual and creative terms.

ACT II - The Mountain is the first new recording from Dionysus and the first movement of the album’s second Act where, explains Brendan Perry; “listeners will find themselves visiting Mount Nysa. This mountain was Dionysus’ place of birth, where he was raised by the centaur Chiron, from whom he learned chants and dances together with Bacchic rites and initiations. “

Driven by Perry’s exploration of religious rites and rituals, Dionysus nevertheless sees ally-in-arms Lisa Gerrard convey the feminine aspect of Dionysus's dual nature through song in both solo and mantric choral forms and ultimately to play the role of Psychopomp, signifying Dionysus's role as an agrarian deity returning to winter’s underworld to reassume the role of guide to dead souls.

RED BARAAT RELEASE NEW LP SOUND THE PEOPLE & ANNOUNCE TOUR DATES

CONGRATULATIONS TO
RED BARAAT
WHOSE NEW LP SOUND THE PEOPLE IS OUT NOW!

Catch them in Chi, IL August 15th at Avondale's Sleeping Village!

BAND CONFIRMS SHOW AT NYC'S LPR ON OCTOBER 4
TOURING NORTH AMERICA THIS SUMMER, FALL & BEYOND

Red Baraat released their new LP, Sound The People via Rhyme & Reason June 29th. In a lengthy essay on the album, Stereogum calls it "a boisterous love letter to cultural harmony" and labeled the LP "reverentially revolutionary."

LISTEN TO SOUND THE PEOPLE ON SPOTIFY

BUY VINYL, CD, DIGITAL

Red Baraat have been touring the U.S in advance of the album's release and have just confirmed an October 4 show at New York City's LPR. The full list of dates is below.

Sound the People was produced by Little Shalimar (Run The Jewels) and the band's Sunny Jain. On their newest offering, the Brooklyn-based band continues their exploration of South Asian culture, while firmly placing it within the context of a globalized generation as demonstrated by the diverse backgrounds of its members. An array of special guests and carefully curated covers help to round out the album. "Kala Mukhra" features Pakistani singer and writer Ali Sethi. The title track is the central force of the record. A stunning collision of traditional Indian music and insurrectionary hip-hop, "Sound the People" is centered around a politically-charged rap by Heems of Brooklyn hip-hop group Das Racist. Constructed from disparate ideas about the South Asian diaspora, migration and the current political climate, it is a powerful and incisive response to the way the United States has changed since the November 2016 election. Elsewhere on the album are contributions from American poet and activist Suheir Hammad and  American humorist John Hodgman.

The album is the follow up to last year's Bhangra Pirates and marks a decade of work for Red Baraat.

"...a politically soaked display of energy." - Stereogum
 "
"...heart-pounding, insanely infectious Punjabi folk music." - NPR

"the band explores what it means to communicate music between individuals and across cultures." - SPIN

NEW RELEASES: SONS OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS FATHER Announce new album Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla Out June 1st, 2018

SONS OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS FATHER

Announce new album
Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla
Out June 1st, 2018

"When Things Fall Apart"

New York City's Sons Of An Illustrious Father - comprised of Josh Aubin, Lilah Larson, and Ezra Miller - are proud to announce their brand new album, Deus Sex Machina:  Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla, which will be released on June 1st, 2018.  Following a brilliant video for the song "Extraordinary Rendition," which came out earlier this spring, the band today share another taste of the album with the song "When Things Fall Apart," which premiered today via Clash.  Click HERE to listen to it.

Sons Of An Illustrious Father were born from an inherent need to represent Otherness within personal identity, continuing the astounding lineage of punk rock icons before them who pushed the boundaries of popular culture via explorations of gender definition and sexual fluidity.  Theirs is a sound that leans back towards the outsiderdom and recklessness in music that paved the way for the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, X-Ray Spex, Bikini Kill, and so many more.

It is from this path that Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla has sprung -- a daring record stuffed to the brim with socio-political ideas and sprawling gender theory which also just happens to be their most epic, most infectious to date.  The album is a distinctively literate statement of intent, an act of resistance from the outsiders and the fighters, aimed at the cerebral cortex even as it inexorably moves your hips. It's a specific direction they have charted ever since they first emerged a few years ago, before finally coalescing into a glorious, head spinning whole on this triumphal record.

Casting a critical eye over a society rotting from the inside out - in their own words, "it's a funeral march for our world we have lost" - the music is anything but bleak and morose. Instead, it sounds enormous, weaving in sepulchral folk, punk, electronica, rock, and much more to dizzying effect. They define their undefinable sound as "genre queer," which sounds idiosyncratic to say the least, but self-analysis is not a preoccupation of this band.  And why should it be? Their obsession with the wholly immersive and visceral experience of music makes them wilfully flippant where particulars and details are concerned, and this record makes good use of their heart-and-gut-wrenching reactions to the dismal current state of affairs.  Indeed, Sons of An Illustrious Father have a miraculous way of turning the atmospheric anger, confusion, and turmoil into chest-bursting anthems meant to bring people together during disparate times.

Over the 9-song span of Deus Sex Machina:  Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla, Sons Of An Illustrious Father's particular vision is celebrated fully and without cliché. Like all the seminal oddballs and aliens that came before them, they are looking at the chaos and disorder in the world right now with resourceful, refined eyes, and they see the glorious opportunity and enormous responsibility that affords. These songs are the end result; listen on and marvel.

About In The Whale:
In the Whale is a high energy two-piece rock band hailing from Denver, CO. Members Nate Valdez (vocals and guitar) and Eric Riley (drums and backing vocals) have been making no-nonsense, balls-to-the-wall rock songs since they formed the band in 2011.

Since then, the two have stayed busy exploring the seedier sides of Denver that inspires their music. In 2012 they released their first EP, 'Cake', and followed it up with the EP, 'Eric', in the late fall of 2013. In between those two releases they played with a stupid number of artists you'd happily phone home about. In addition to sharing stages with bands like Murder By Death, Local H, Reverend Horton Heat and Electric Six in their hometown, the band has hit the road and played alongside The Airborne Toxic Event, Agent Orange, Jane's Addiction and Slash. In the Whale released their third EP titled 'Nate' in April 2014 and will continue relentlessly touring until they have conquered everything.

Catch In the Whale's incredible live show on tour this winter!
