Misfits at Concord - Chicago October 2013 #OriginalPhotos #punk #hardrock

Every day is Halloween for The Misfits.   Still it was a treat to see them earlier this October at one of Chicago's newest music venues, Concord Music Hall. These guys have one of the most recognizable band logos out there, and they know how to rock a theme!   Of course they played all their own hits, and we even got to hear 'em cover Black Flag.

Check out our full set of live show shots below.

The Concord's a pretty sweet space, close to The Congress, yet much more intimate.  There are plentiful bars and rumor is they'll be greatly expanding their presently meager beer choices next month.   At the moment they offer flaming bottles of booze, a fair selection of mixed drinks, and a few beers.

The main venue is up a bunch of stairs, so don't get too drunk to get back down them.  Balconies provide sweet sight lines (& refuge for younger kids at all ages shows) and there's a bit of seating around the edges of the back two levels. Watch your shins, though.  The black trunk like tables blend in to the dark and are bruisers.

A few lucky punk kin scored pit seating and more young kids were lining the balcony rails where they we're out of the crushing zone and had a great view of the mosh pit.

We're hoping Concord Music Hall improve the audio a bit along with the already slated improvements to the beers on tap.   The sound's loud enough but thin and weak on the bass end of things.   Otherwise, Concords a great addition to the mid sized club scene and to Logan Square in particular.   They've got an interesting and varied line up slated through fall.   Check 'em out here!

Here's a few of our favorites:

Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg with Andrew W.K. on Vocals

Andrew W.K. will be joining Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg as the lead singer for their 2013 world tour. The punk drumming icon and his band will be fronted by the king of partying for a high-octane performance of more than THIRTY of Marky's classic fan-favorite songs! These will include songs that took him from the halcyon stage of CBGB's to touring around the world. From the celluloid halls of Rock 'n Roll High School to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Ramone's career has taken him far and wide, earning him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award, and immortalizing his handprints on the Hollywood Rock Walk.

Speaking on how he chose Andrew W.K. as his singer, Ramone said, "I first met Andrew through a mutual friend and he told me about his party philosophy, which has also always been my exact take on life. We went into the rehearsal studio and it just clicked. We had so much fun that we wanted to invite everyone to the party. I've said before and I will say it again, these songs are too good not to be played live!!!"

W.K. echoed Ramone's sentiment, saying, "When Marky Ramone asks you to be his singer, you don't even think about it. It's an automatic, YES. I was intimidated by the magnitude of the opportunity – freaked out and overwhelmed – but I was also completely determined and focused – it's something I had to do. Even just the first rehearsal felt like an odyssey, but that's how you can tell the experience is changing your life. I've never had a more rewarding, humbling, orchallenging invitation than this, and I'm serving the gods via this incredible sound Marky and his band created. There's never been better rock 'n' roll music made than this, and I will give everything I have to do it justice."

The historic pairing will kick-off their world tour in New York City on May 3rd, 2013 at Andrew's very own venue, Santos Party House, in downtown Manhattan.

Currently, Marky Ramone hosts his own weekly satellite radio show "Punk Rock Blitzkrieg," which is broadcast nationally via Sirius/XM Faction. He has also entered the culinary realm with the release of his highly successful Marinara Pasta Sauce, based on his Great Grandfather's recipe. Marky Ramone's Marinara Pasta Sauce has wowed such mainstream media outlets as the Wall Street Journal, Food Network Magazine and the New York Post. The sauce is even served and sold at world renowned chef Daniel Boulud's New York City restaurant, DBGB Kitchen & Bar.

Andrew W.K. has been a constant figure in national media ever since his 2000 debut, and in recent years he's been spreading his message of positive partying and high-energy entertainment with even greater intensity. His singular ability to straddle both mainstream media and fringe culture has made him an instantly recognizable modern pop icon. An example of his lasting influence is the recent 10th Anniversary Deluxe release of his landmark debut album, I Get Wet, the world tour of which sold out dates across the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan. Most recently, Energizer Personal Care announced Andrew W.K. as the face of Playtex's new product, Fresh + Sexy Wipes. Andrew continues to surprise, confound, and engage his audience with an expanding array of energetic and enthusiastic entertainment.

FIGO

It's been a crazy ride for New York's FIGO. The band, which doubles their live electronic punk rock carnage with a strictly bangers DJ and remix crew, has rocked crowds across North America, Europe, and Asia, touring relentlessly on the local club circuit to sharing stages with the likes of The Crystal Method, Ladytron, Cut Copy, The Faint, Skrillex, The Presets, 2ManyDJs, Eric Prydz, and several others. They've crushed major music festivals along the way, including Identity, Summerburst, Detour, Amsterjam, I Love This City, Camp Bisco, South By Southwest, and more.

After releasing their first single, "PLAZA," via Calcium Records with remixes from EDM heavyweights Tommie Sunshine and Stephen Cole, followed by their own remixes of Justice, Ladytron, and A Place To Bury Strangers, FIGO's debut EP, Put It All On Black, was released independently in 2012. The release has received critically – acclaimed reviews and nods from RCRDLBL, FILTER Magazine, The New York Post, NME Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, URB Magazine, and many others, with comparisons to anyone from The Misfits and Iggy & The Stooges, to Nitzer Ebb, Soulwax, and Kasabian. Keeping true to their signature electro-punk vs. dance sound, FIGO has since collaborated with and remixed artists as diverse as K'Naan, The Boxer Rebellion, and NERVO, for labels such as AM Octone, Astralwerks, and Mute.

In a recent collaboration, FIGO hooked up with Doc Nasty to take on dancefloor dracula Drop The Lime's stupid-funky cover of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper", out now as an official remix on Ultra Records. In signature FIGO style, the flip-script of Drop The Lime's dark and gritty cut takes grimy punk riffs spun with bits of electro-house and reverb, and voila, you've got raw dance-core in all its crunchy, bass-battered glory. FIGO shows no sign of slowing down in 2013: in addition to their Ultra Records release, this October they'll be packing up their musical mayhem and traversing the U.S. on a full live tour supporting legendary punk-rocker Marky Ramone with notorious party-rocker Andrew W.K.

TONIGHT: GWAR Rock Chicago at Riot Fest Confirmed to Wreak Havoc Down Under at the 2014 Soundwave Festival

Thankfully GWAR has a later Riot Fest slot for 2013 near dusk.   Seeing them in the afternoon sun was truly terrifying!   Nonetheless, we got some rockin' campy shots of their set and the crowd carnage after including some of our all time favs below.   ChiIL Live Shows will be there for the bloodbath tonight... will you?!   Bring on the camp n gore.   Click here for more of our photo filled Riot Fest recaps.

Fresh off their highly successful and best GWAR-B-Q yet, your lords and masters have announced that they will be conquering yet another festival.  That's right everyone's favorite Scumdogs GWAR will be returning to the land down under to wreak havoc and make sweet Kangaroo love with the locals.  The first show is Saturday February 22nd in Brisbane, followed by shows in Syndey, Melbourne and Adelaide before wrapping up Monday March 3rd in Perth.  A complete list of dates is below.

"Considering it was twice as big as last year's 2012 GWAR-B-Q and about eight times as slaughter-ific, your Lords and Masters, the mighty GWAR, are semi-satisfied, said lead singer Oderus Urungus, who was contacted at this Antarctican fortress.  "The sheer amount of carnage influcted...I mean I saw whole families just wiped out in the savage glee of the Pit of the GWAR-B-Q, willingly screaming as their bodies were pulped by our giant meat grinder.  Every drop of GWAR Beer and GWAR B-Q Sauce was consumed, and all the bands ruled! And loyal bohab Goldmember repeated as Spew-O-Lympic champion it was far and away the greatest GWAR-B-Q yet."

"Now on to our new album Battle Maximus, the new GWAR album, featuring the debut of new Scumdog Pustulus Maximus.  A new era of GWAR has begun.  Hail FLATTUS, Hail GWAR, tell all of your friends that missed the 2013 GWAR-B-Q that they fucked up!"

On playing the Soundwave Festival Oderus said:

"We can't wait to come back to Australia as part of the colossal Soundwave Festival.  Now if we could only figure out how to get there, if we swim, on Gor-Gor's back we should be able to decimate Asia nicely"

GWAR recently announced the first leg of their massive "Madness at the Core of Time" world tour, in support of their new album, Battle Maximus.  The tour, which features a completely brand-new show full of slavering creatures and deserving victims, is set to kick off October 2nd in Columbus, Ohio and runs through November 17th in Washington, DC.  GWAR shall be joined by deathcore heavyweights and label-mates Whitechapel, Richmond, VA thrashers Iron Reagan (featuring Municipal Waste singer Tony Foresta) and A Band of Orcs (who are actually a band of Orcs).

GWAR has teamed up with VICE to drop the next tasty morsel from Battle Maximus on your pointy little heads.  Head HERE, to read an exclusive interview with Oderus and to hear the premiere of the song "Bloodbath".

GWAR is set to release Battle Maximus their 13th studio album, and their first since legendary Scumdog Flattus Maximus returned to the stars to fulfill his cosmic destiny. The album will be available September 17th via Metal Blade Records.  Check out the first track, "Madness at the Core of Time" and pre-order your copy of Battle Maximus HERE.

GWAR's Battle Maximus features twelve brand new tracks that not only honor their departed ally, but tells the story of GWAR's latest struggle against what may be their greatest enemy yet...the insidious "Mr. Perfect", who has travelled through time itself to steal the power of GWAR--the power of immortality, and use this power to mutate the human race into his twisted vision of what the "perfect" human should be. Once again GWAR finds themselves as the only thing standing between the human race and the latest super-powered shithead bent on the destruction of GWAR and the enslavement of their worshippers.

Spiritualized at Lincoln Hall 7-12-13 #originalphotos

I had the pleasure of shooting Spiritualized for ChiIL Live Shows at Lincoln Hall in Chicago 7/12/13.   Check out our original show shots right here.

 Spiritualized

Sweet Heart Sweet Light

"When you make a record, it has to be the single most important thing in your world. This time around, I wanted to do something that encompassed all I love in rock 'n' roll music. It's got everything from Brtzmann and Berry right through to Dennis and Brian Wilson.  I'm obsessed with music and the way you put it together and I don't believe there are any rules." So says, J. Spaceman, commenting on the recording of his new album, Sweet Heart Sweet Light, which was released on Mississippi-based independent Fat Possum in March 2012.

Recorded over the past two years in Wales, Los Angeles and Reykjavik, and mixed for a year in the confines of his own home, Sweet Heart Sweet Light was Spiritualized's seventh studio album and the first release since last year's epic Radio City Music Hall rendering of their 1997 game changer Ladies In Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space

Coming four years after release of the internationally acclaimed Songs In A&E,Sweet Heart Sweet Light was one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of 2012. Taking musical risks is a hallmark of Spiritualized's outlook.

Witness them playing the new album, unannounced, from start to finish live at London's historic Royal Albert Hall - something unheard of in today's clamour for instant hit gratification. As J.Spacemen says "I don't believe there are any rules" and this album will testify to that.
