Buffalo, New York. Hockey, the cold, the canal, the train yard, Rick James and Ani DiFranco, cheap dilapidated Victorians, potholes brimming with ice and slush . . .

Buffalo is a place where people grow up, and a place people sadly—but understandably—end up leaving in pursuit of their dreams. And it’s Buffalo where MiWi La Lupa started his musical adventure, as so many public school kids in America do, by picking a dented, smelly old instrument off the shelf in band class and giving it a go. MiWi picked the trombone. It fit—sort of. He started a band, Thought. Then he packed his bags.

MiWi made his way east, first to Rochester and the Eastman School of Music, trading in his trombone for a bass trumpet, before, like many musicians, continuing on down the Hudson and arriving in NYC in the summer of 2005.

Once in the city things began to take off for MiWi, and he soon found himself performing with music greats like Les McCann, David Byrne, Bill Frisell, Femi Kuti, Charlie Hunter, and El-P. MiWi would also become an original member of the band Red Baraat, with whom he would go on to tour the world.

Be it the diversity of MiWi’s palate, his growth as a musician and experiences on the road, or his roots coming from a blue-collar corner of the country often passed over and left for dead by the chronologists of the musical cannon, MiWi’s endeavors were aligning, naturally, with the art of songwriting. Expression—of loss, desire, grief, forgiveness—and a growing need to examine, document, and articulate his life began to take over, and soon the seeds of MiWi’s first solo album were firmly planted.

New Way Home, MiWi’s debut album on Team Love, is the result of life taking an unexpected turn. With the help of Monica Frisell, the songs began to take shape in early 2013. As things developed, friends such as Joanna Warren, Conor Elmes, Curtis Fowlkes, Rob Jost, Mara Kaye, Natalie John, Timothy Allen, Bill Frisell, and Conor Oberst, all enthused at the sound, eagerly jumped in to lend a hand. New Way Home is a short, immediate, and catchy album, but its real magic lies in its ability to invoke a wide range of sonic diversity while not losing sight of its singular vision.

A track like “Ashes To The Wind” invokes legendary bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, while “Here I Am” positions itself neatly between singer-songwriters like Ron Sexsmith and Stuart Murdoch. The album’s songs range from playfully vengeful (“Everybody’s Fuckin’ With Me”) to sorrowfully serious (“New Moon”). MiWi’s voice is frank, his phrasing crisp, his lyrics easy to grasp yet full of twists. The songs document a season in a life, offering empathy to the listener while asking for the same in return.

New Way Home was released on Team Love Records January 21, 2014.

Chicago's Own Jason Narducy Back With New Band Split Single #NewRelease #SXSW

SPLIT SINGLE ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF FRAGMENTED WORLD 4/1; ALBUM TRAILER, SXSW, RELEASE SHOW

“Watching Jason was the first time I thought I could start my own band, and write my own kind of music....Jason totally set my life in this new direction. It wasn’t a Jimmy Page or KISS poster I had – it was fuckin’ him!”-- Dave Grohl

“Jason’s been doin’ the rock since he was a snot-nosed little punk. And I can attest from his work with me on the road that he’s got it down. And it’s not going to stop any time soon.”-- Robert Pollard

“I’m used to hearing Jason making me sound better, but it’s funny and familiar as well to hear his voice standing out in front again. I’m a fan of Jason’s work – it’s classic late 20th-century pop music songwriting"--Bob Mould

“Jason is a fan of great songwriters like Pete Townshend, Lennon & McCartney, Bob Mould, Robert Pollard, and Strummer & Jones, so it would only be natural that he’d write such well-crafted, memorable pop songs.”-- Jon Wurster

“I’m always wearing so many hats, so I loved the idea of being in a band where all I do is play bass on someone else’s stuff. I felt like a session musician, which was so cool. Still, I got pretty in depth: there were no preconceptions, which is what collaboration is all about.”--Britt Daniel

Jason Narducy's epic career first started as a co-founder of Verböten – one of the seminal acts in the Chicago punk scene that produced groundbreaking bands like Naked Raygun and Big Black. Narducy then went on to become frontman/songwriter/guitarist for Verbow, another beloved Windy City outfit who signed a major-label deal with Epic/Sony during the ‘90s alt-rock bubble. He followed that up with an ongoing, nearly decade-long run as indie-rock’s secret weapon – serving as bassist and backing vocalist for indie-underground icons like Bob Mould, Robert Pollard, and Superchunk, as well as Seattle’s indie power-pop faves Telekinesis.

Now, Narducy is returning to center stage as a bandleader with Fragmented World – the debut album from Split Single. A new project formed with fellow travelers Britt Daniel (Spoon, Divine Fits) on bass and drummer Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Mountain Goats, Bob Mould, Ben Gibbard, Robert Pollard), Split Single proves equal parts solo project and collective. The material on Fragmented World ultimately spans the breadth of Narducy’s history while artfully exploring a gamut of styles and emotions in ways he’s never approached before.

Split Single will be touring on this album, and Jason will be at SXSW (with touring band Ben Trokan of Reigning Sound and Tim Remis). The band's record release will be in Chicago at Schubas on April 5th.

NEW RELEASES: Simone Felice Molly-O MP3

ARTISTS ON OUR RADAR:

Simone Felice
"Molly-O" from Strangers (Out March 25th on Dualtone)

Simone Felice is a founding member (lyricist, vocalist, drummer and guitarist) of internationally acclaimed, Catskill Mountain-based artists The Felice Brothers and The Duke & The King. He has toured and worked with the likes as The Band’s Levon Helm, Conor Oberst & Bright Eyes, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Rick Rubin, The Avett Brothers, and Old Crow Medicine Show.

In 2010 Simone underwent emergency open-heart surgery to correct the slow, degenerative effects of a childhood fever. It was this close brush with death, coupled with the need to tell his own story, which prompted him to walk the solo artist’s path.

His new full-length album, Strangers, is a ten song collection recorded in the Catskills with guest artists The Felice Brothers, Leah Siegel, and Wesley Schultz & Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers. Here is an effort that truly captures Simone’s rare gift as a poet, song-crafter and unique visionary.

Strangers is March 25th, 2014 on Dualtone Records

“Each song somehow sounds like a classic, each live performance suggesting we are in the presence of a rare, fiery brilliance.” The Guardian

“Often times the word ‘poet’ is casually assigned to a songwriter, and all too often it is not true. Simone Felice is a poet to the core.” Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers

“Dylan and Leonard Cohen are brought to mind, such is the depth of emotion wrought by Felice’s careful approach… Shows the power of music to lift your spirits and make your heart full – absolutely fantastic.” BBC

“The most unique person I know in the world, incredible charisma. He sees things in a way that nobody else sees them, which is why his music is beautiful.” Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons

“Nothing shackles Felice.” Mojo

“There is a boldness to Simone’s writing, the fierceness and fearlessness of complete honesty that pushes into places that simply take the breath away…some of his songs are so perfectly formed they sound like they might have been around forever… the best I have heard in a while, touching the hem of Dylan by way of Gordon Lightfoot…These songs are good enough to be sung by the whole world” The Telegraph

“Brilliant.” The Boston Globe

“Spellbinding.” UNCUT

* BIO *
Simone Felice is a celebrated songwriter, author, and poet. He was born on 4 October 1976 in Palenville, New York, a small working-class hamlet in the Catskill Mountains.

At the age of twelve Simone suffered a brain aneurysm and was pronounced clinically dead for several minutes. Recovering from emergency brain surgery in a local hospital, he spent two months in intensive care, relearning basic motor skills, including reading and writing.
When he was fifteen he formed a punk band with friends, making weird noise-rock in his grandpa’s barn. Their emphasis was on head-banging and freaky storytelling. By eighteen, he had quit school to panhandle and play bars and low down clubs, including New York City’s fabled CBGB.

It was around this time that Felice began writing poetry and vignettes, eventually leading to the publication of his first collection, The Picture Show, when he was twenty-two years old. He began performing these bizarre monologues regularly at the historic Nuyorican Poets Café in New York’s lower east side, garnering the young poet invitations to read in London, Harvard University, San Francisco and Berlin.

In 2004 and then 2005 Simone’s first works of short fiction were published: Goodbye Amelia, a coming of age story about a small-town girl with secrets to keep and a hunger to see the world, and Hail Mary Full of Holes, a fable noir about a runaway prostitute lost in the dawn of the Reagan era.

In the Fall of 2001, just after the attacks on New York City, Simone began writing songs with his brother Ian. Together they retreated to the woods they grew up in where, jobless with a cheap guitar, they wrote and made recordings (two collections know as The Big Empty and Mexico) with their friend Doc Brown. In this manner the two brothers clocked five years in complete obscurity, sewing the seeds of what would become (with the edition of their younger brother James in the Winter of 2006) The Felice Brothers, whose subsequent albums Through These Reigns And GoneTonight at the ArizonaThe Felice Brothers, and Yonder is the Clock have garnered international praise, earning these Upstate New York natives an inarguable place in the Great American Songbook. Over the group’s early history, from starting out playing New York’s subways and streets, to Radio City Music Hall and beyond, brother Simone has been one of it’s key lyricists and arrangers, co-writing some of the boys’ most beloved songs, including Don’t Wake The Scarecrow, Frankie’s Gun, Run Chicken Run, Ruby Mae, Whiskey in My Whiskey, Love Me Tenderly, Hey Hey Revolver, Mercy, Wonderful Life, Your Belly In My Arms, The Devil Is Real, and Radio Song to name a few.

At the request of iconic record producer Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Beastie Boys, Adele, et al), Simone flew to California in the late summer of 2008 to play drums on the Columbia Records release I and Love and You by The Avett Brothers. Lending his signature Catskill Mountain dirtbag swing to the Avett’s riveting songwriting and Rubin’s thoughtful production, Felice appears on some of the albums stand-out songs, including the title-track and lead single I and Love and You, which helped send the album to #1 in the Billboard folk charts

In the winter of 2009 personal tragedy reared its head when Simone and his long-time love lost their first child in a late-term miscarriage. It was then that he retreated to a cabin in the Catskill’s with old friend Bird and began writing and recording the songs that would (unknown to them at the time) become The Duke & The King’s album debut. Taking their name from the itinerant Shakespeare theatre grifters in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the project released its gripping Nothing Gold Can Stay in the Summer of 2009 to critical acclaim, being hailed as one of the most haunting and honest albums of the year. 2010′s followup Long Live The Duke & The King has been similarly praised.

Felice’s first novel, Black Jesus, was released by award-wining publisher Allen & Unwin (Atlantic Books/Faber&Faber) and Random House Germany. It tells the story of a young Marine shipped home to his nowhere town after being blinded in action by a homemade bomb, and the unexpected friendship he finds with a mysterious dancer who arrives one day fleeing darkness and violence of a different kind. Part love story, part protest of the broken promises lying at the heart of the American dream, Black Jesus is a passionate, twisted hymn to the marginalized and forgotten.

On 2 June 2010, after a series of fainting spells, Simone underwent emergency open-heart surgery at Albany Medical Center when doctors discovered that a childhood congenital disorder had left the thirty-three year old with an irreversible calcification of the aortic valve, leaving only 8% blood-flow to the body and brain. Just two weeks after the surgery he joined his brothers on stage at Pete Seeger’s annual Clearwater Festival to help rid their beloved Hudson River of industrial waste. The following month his daughter, Pearl Simone Felice was born, a healthy blue-eyed girl who came in a summer thunderstorm.

In the subsequent years following his operation and Pearl’s birth, with a new mechanical heart-valve ticking away the time, Felice did what it seems he’s always done: He wrote songs. With a renewed clarity and sense of purpose, Simone bent to his new work, leaving behind any past monikers, in search of something pure, something truly his own.

April 2012 saw the release of his self-titled debut solo album, featuring songs such as New York Times, You & I Belong, and Charade which have become staple highlights in his live appearances. Among other accolades, Nick Hasted of The Independent called the record: ‘A taut masterpiece of terrifying, exhilarating American tales.’

Simone’s new full-length album, Strangers, (due out March 2014) is a ten song collection recorded in the Catskills with guest artists The Felice Brothers, Leah Siegel, and Wesley Schultz & Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers. Here is an effort that truly captures Simone’s rare gift as a poet, his high song-craft and unique vision; an album certain to cement Felice’s place as one of the great songwriter-poets of his generation.

Recently Britain’s esteemed Guardian newspaper commissioned Felice to write a personal memoir on the subject of his near-death experiences, first as a young boy, then as a grown artist, and how these two odd brushes with ‘the other side’ have influenced his work. The piece begins with a lyric from The Wizard Of Oz:

I would not be just a nuthin’, My head all full of stuffin’,
My heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry,
Life would be a ding-a-derry,
If I only had a brain…

Simone lives less than a mile from the creek-house he was born in, and travels his own country and abroad sharing his songs and stories

INCOMING: Nick Waterhouse at Lincoln Hall 2/21 #FreeStreaming #NewRelease

Nick Waterhouse is one of our current top favorites here at ChiIL Live Shows.   So we're eagerly awaiting the March release of his new album, Holly.   He'll be playing Lincoln Hall on February 21st in celebration of his latest release, as part of a nationwide tour.

We had the great pleasure of catching him twice last year, and shooting stills at Lincoln Hall.   Click here to check out our prior coverage and more live Nick Waterhouse show shots.

NICK WATERHOUSE’S “THIS IS A GAME” VIDEO PREMIERES AT ESQUIRE

SOPHOMORE ALBUM HOLLY SET FOR MARCH 4 RELEASE ON INNOVATIVE LEISURE

NATIONWIDE TOUR DATES CONFIRMED

“A timeless talent…”—NPR’s “World Café”

“The real deal…”—GQ

“…he’s a tightly wound, meticulous rock & roll scholar who commands up to a dozen musicians onstage beside him with the authority of a seasoned bandleader.”—LA Weekly

The video for “This Is A Game,” the lead single off Nick Waterhouse’s latest album Holly (due March 4 on Innovative Leisure), is now streaming at Esquire http://bit.ly/1e2AdQQ. The new record, which follows Waterhouse’s 2012 debut Time’s All Gone, has received early critical acclaim—Rolling Stone explains “Nick Waterhouse is a soul man, through and through,” while Paste Magazine praises the music as a “…cohesive selection of work that, presented together, tells a story.” To celebrate the release, Waterhouse will embark on a nationwide tour. See below for details.

Holly was produced by Waterhouse and Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) and includes song writing collaborations with friend Ty Segall, as well as covers of tracks by Young Holt Trio and Mose Allison among others. Of the new music, Waterhouse notes, “Thematically this record feels more like a novella, or poem with sections, or even a film, than a collection of songs. It is a work of fiction, with a protagonist, but also a floating omniscient narrator, and fragments of conversation from other characters. I was heavily influenced by my surroundings in young Los Angeles, as well as the concept of fate.”

Waterhouse grew up in Huntington Beach, CA. He established his musical sensibilities in the middle of the burgeoning Southern California psych-garage scene, while retaining his unique perspective on the spirit of American rhythm & blues and rock & roll. Waterhouse started performing as a teenager. “I found it had the same feeling I got racing motorcycles as a kid, which is a fight-or-flight feeling of things happening in ‘real time’…I felt like that was the most focusing thing about playing music versus other forms of art. You have to live with what you do in an immediate moment,” he explains.

Girl Band are:
Dara Kiely / Alan Duggan / Daniel Fox / Adam Faulkner

Noisey recently premiered the track saying it "boasts no-wave muttering over a cacophony of defibrillated guitar, as the instruments are forced to glitch and burp within an inch of their lives." The single (due for release on January 20th in the US via Any Other City Records) includes the b-side "Heckle The Frames" and will be released on a limited run of 300 7" records, each screen-printed and hand stitched.  Lawman is the follow up to the band's 2012 debut EP France 1998.

"Second One is a fantastic blast of punky fury and righteous energy." -THE IRISH TIMES

"This is maniacal music, the kind that translates onto its listener and turns them into a more rabid individual. Watch out." -THIS IS FAKE DIY

"musically somewhere between bleach-era nirvana, mclusky, jesus lizard and even that incendiary first idlewild demo in their teens, long before they started sounding like rem. this a band listening to the same bands as metz have been listening to, but living a lot closer to home.' a must." -ROUGH TRADE

"A succinct, vicious little slab of noise-pop genius that expertly blends texture, dissonance, and squealing, searing feedback with tight dynamism and an infectious hook; think 'Song 2' by Blur if they'd been paying homage to noise-rock, rather than parodying grunge." -DROWNED IN SOUND

"Goddamn this is ace." -THE QUIETUS

"Taken from the ingeniously-named France ‘98 EP, ‘You’re A Dog’ is the perfect introduction to fearless neo-grungers Girl Band, on the off-chance that you haven’t yet heard the masterful noise rock these four Dubliners produce." -HOT PRESS

Shrek The Musical Deluxe Edition Blu-ray™ and DVD out now!

Disclosure:  Thanks to Dreamworks and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment for providing us with a review copy.  All opinions are our own.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:

Here at ChiIL Mama, we adore Shrek.   The great green ogre and his wife are the stars of a series of fairy tales that finally don't feature a skinny, blond, narcoleptic princess awaiting rescue.   Princess Fiona kicks booty, and is a fabulous role model.

If you've never checked out the original book by William Steig, we highly recommend it.  The book is even quirkier and cooler than the animated movies (which we also love), and we completely dig the Broadway musical adaptation!

Now the equation goes one step further with a Blu-Ray/DVD movie... of the play... of the book...

This one's a keeper!   Now out on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital HD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Steig is an excellent children's author and illustrator and this is the perfect candidate for playing the "same/different game".  We love to check out the original books when we go see book based movies and theatre and then compare and contrast the different versions of the tale with the "same/different game".

Last night Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, special guests and Broadway stars from Shrek The Musical walked the green carpet in NYC at The Hudson Bond for the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy launch event.

In attendance were Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl) and the stars of Shrek The Musical, including Sutton Foster (Fiona), Christopher Sieber (Lord Farquaad), John Tartaglia (Pinocchio), Daniel Breaker (Donkey), Marissa O'Donnell (Teen Fiona), Leah Greenhaus (Young Fiona, Flower Girl) and many others!

Featuring a fantastic score of 17 all-new songs, Shrek The Musical was filmed on stage to capture the magic of a Broadway performance and stars an amazing celebrated cast. The film was shot live on Broadway with 10 cameras and directed by Michael Warren. Now you can bring the magic of Broadway to your home and get the best seat in the house with Deluxe Edition Blu-ray™ and DVD out now!

Here at ChiIL Mama, we had a chance to give away 4 packs of tickets for our readers and review Shrek the Musical by the Broadway Touring Company and then again by Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, earlier this year.  Shrek the Musical is a pure joy to experience and fun for all ages.  Now you can take it home with you to enjoy over and over at your convenience!

6 Steps To Bring The Magic Of Broadway To Your Own Living Room

Experience The Magic Of Shrek The Musical On Blu-ray and DVD, Available Now!
With the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD release of Shrek The Musical releasing this week, fairy-tale fans and musical theatergoers alike can now experience the Grammy-nominated stage production in the comfort of one’s own home! Featuring a fantastic score of 17 brand new songs, Shrek The Musical was filmed on stage to capture the magic of a Broadway performance and features an all-star cast.

Here are 6 simple steps to emulate the magic of Broadway in your own living room:
Step One - Sight
No digital interpretation of the stage would be complete without a state-of-the-art projector that can produce an image of up to 150 inches. If a projector is too costly, a 40 inch television or larger will suffice to give the home audience the optimum visual experience.

Step Two – Sound
No ultimate living room entertainment set-up would be complete without a crisp surround sound system. With the ear being stimulated from 4 angles, the illusion of being immersed in a theatre can be achieved.

Step Three – Tickets Please
Why not design your own tickets to your show? Guests will have to show their tickets before entering the living room for example. German Shepherds dressed in tuxedos make excellent ushers too.

Step Four - Wow it’s Green in Here
With a simple purchase of green crepe paper attached to a range of living room light sources, a green filtered glow will engulf the room to create a wonderfully Shrek-like ambience.

Step Five - ‘Curtain Call Ladies and Gentlemen!’
The anticipation of waiting for the famous theatrical curtains to trickle away is no doubt one of the fundamental experiences of going to the theatre. With a curtain rail, fabric and some sticky tape, your living room will mirror the Gershwin’s famous curtain call in no time.

Step Five: Intermission:
Why not engage in a 15-minute interval? Prepare a refreshing beverage for the adults and load up on the ice cream for the kids. Don’t forget those little wooden spoons for the upmost authenticity.

Step Six: Applause:
Don’t forget to clap along with the audience when something particularly amusing or impressive arises on screen. Booing and hissing at the respective villains may also prove effective. Please note, please do not throw your shows or any object at the screen for fear of damaging your precious TV set.  Although all these tips may make you believe that you are in the theater, it’s not real remember.
We are sure you’ll love watching your favorite animated characters come to life like magic, and now you’re ready to experience it at home! Pick up the Blu-ray for your family to enjoy today!

Get To Know The Shrek Bunch

The Cast Of The Animated Franchise Comes To Life On Stage and Blu-ray, This Week!

The loved and laughable DreamWorks animation Shrek is brought to life in Shrek The Musical and enjoyed by fans and families of the Broadway stage. Now you can bring the excitement to your living room when you pick up the musical on Blu-ray and DVD. What better way to celebrate the release than a brief introduction to the stage cast of your favorite animated movie. Read down to find out who among them was a Bunhead, a Julliard graduate, and will be starring in a Shakespeare Classic this season.  Meet the Shrek bunch!

Bryan D’arcy James – Bryan plays the role of our beloved ogre Shrek. While he’s sure to win you over in his green role he’s definitely not new to the stage. Mr. Darcy will be star opposite Ethan Hawke in the Lincoln Center Theatre production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The talented artist is also notable on the screen too, most recently for his role as Frank Houston on NBC’s Broadway themed drama ‘Smash’.  You’re probably wondering if he sings too, and he does, his solo debut album is From Christmas Eve to Christmas Morn.

Sutton Foster - Princess Fiona is brought to life by the beautiful Sutton Foster. The multi talented artist (actor, singer, and dancer) is best known for her role in the fan favorite ABC Family series ‘Bunheads’, for which she earned a Critic’s Choice Television Awards nomination. Using her beautiful voice, Sutton has performed at venues across the country performing in concerts such as Funny Girl, They’re playing out songs, Chess, and many more.  Like her fellow cast mate, she also works on solo album projects, releasing two albums, Wish and An Evening with Sutton Foster – Live at the Café Carlye.

Christopher Sieber - Every story needs a villain and none is more villainous than Lord Farquaad, played by Christopher Sieber.  His performance as the miniature maniacal royal is sure to make your living room erupt with laughter and boo’s. Chris’ talent has also been enjoyed in various Broadway productions, such as Pipin, Spamalot, Beauty and The Beast, Into the Woods, and much more. NOCTUM Reveal Album Artwork and Track Listing for New Full-Length Album Final Sacrifice

Available October 29th on Metal Blade Records

Swedish rockers NOCTUM have confirmed an October 29th release date for their Metal Blade Records debut Final Sacrifice.  Today the artwork and track listing have been revealed. The cover art was painted by Timo Ketola (Sunn o))), Arktau Eos) and fits perfectly with the album's raw, natural sound.

In the town of Uppsala, Sweden in the year 2009 a band called Séance was formed.  Moving at breakneck speed the band formed in September, recorded a two-song demo after adding guitarist Per Wikström to the lineup in October, and by November had changed their name to NOCTUM. Within those three months, the band signed an LP deal with High-Roller Records, and a CD deal with Stormspell Records.

NOCTUM's debut album, The Séance, was released in September 2010 via High-Roller and in December by Stormspell. The band finally embarked on their first European tour in July of 2011, and followed that up with a new EP, The Fiddler.

By August of 2011, NOCTUM created enough buzz in the underground to gain the attention of Metal Blade Records, which led to a new worldwide record deal.

With a new record deal in place with a global label, NOCTUM spent the majority of 2012 refining their sound and writing new songs. Their search for original and interesting material led them to a heavier and darker sound. The progression came very naturally for the band and differs from the typical 70's vibe. The new material successfully evokes a heaviness and emotion one might not expect from a "retro" sounding band.

Noctum toured Europe again in 2012, and then welcomed the addition of drummer Fredrik Jansson after Gustaf's departure. Jansson, who spent time in Witchcraft, Count Raven, and Abramis Brama, was added to the lineup in time to record Final Sacrifice in April 2013.

Final Sacrifice is a fictional horror story where each song communicates a portion of the overall narrative. The "final sacrifice" is like a red thread that ties the songs together and is the concept behind the art. Final Sacrifice is an analog piece of art in both audio and visual aspects.

The track "Liberty in Death" can be previewed HERE.

Final Sacrifice Track Listing:
1. Conflagration
2. Liberty in Death
3. Resurrected in Evil

7. A Burning Will
8. Temple of the Living Dead
9. Azoth

HALCYON WAY Announce World Premiere of video at ProgPower USA

Atlanta Metallers HALCYON WAY are currently in the final stages of mixing for their new album.  The band recently completed work on a video for the song "Web Of Lies".  The video will receive its exclusive premiere on Saturday September 27th at 7:45 PM at ProgPower USA XIV in Atlanta, GA.

HALCYON WAY will be hitting the road this September and October alongside Saxon and Fozzy.  The tour kicks off September 12th in Patchouge, NY and runs through October 19th in Vancouver, BC.  A complete list of dates can be found below.
Guitarist Jon Bodan gave some insight on the new album:

"Thanks to the support of the many fans that contributed to our IndieGoGo campaign, we are in the final stages of editing our first 'proper' music video, for a track called "Web Of Lies" off our upcoming new record.  The video is coming out amazing, and the song is killer - it's heavy, technical yet accessible, and it has the giant hook that defines the HW sound."

"We're naming the new album "Conquer" as a result of the adversity that we have faced as a band since we released our last couple of albums.  We've been through many ups and downs over the last few years, and they would have destroyed many other bands.  We've overcome life-threatening illnesses, lineup changes, and all sorts of gutpunches, but we persevere.  We are extremely proud of this new record, and we think that it will help to inspire people going through similar hard times."

The album was produced by Jon Bodan & Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer) with additional vocal production by Seth Von Paulus (Linda Perry, Alicia Keys, Crash Kings, Smashing Pumpkins).  Art will again be handled by the legendary Travis Smith at Seempieces."

Known for their explosive live shows, instantly catchy melodies, precise vocal harmonies, incendiary guitar work, intricate yet pounding drums, and great showmanship, they dominate the live scene.

Aurally combining the heaviness of bands like Testament, the technical prowess of Dream Theater, the power metallic attitude of Evergrey and soaring vocal melodies, HALCYON WAY will leave you awestricken by their punishing riffs and unforgettable hooks.

SUPERSUCKERS to deliver new album to Acetate Records, distributed by MVD Entertainment Group

Acetate Records announces the addition of legendary Seattle band Supersuckers to their roster. The as of yet untitled album will be recorded at Willie Nelson's famous Arlyn Studio, in Austin, TX.  It will be the band's ninth studio record and their first since 2008's Get It Together, released on the band's own Mid-Fi Recordings label.

"The band is really firing on all cylinders here lately and we're super stoked to get into the very same studio where we recorded Sacrilicious (SubPop, 1995) and create this rock-n-roll juggernaut," writes frontman Eddie Spaghetti. "We're also excited that we'll be releasing the record through Acetate Records, a new home for us and we're all in the honeymoon stages of the relationship now, so things are rosy and looking up."

To celebrate this union of rock, Acetate Records and Supersuckers are offering fans a FREE E.P. entitled "50,000 Middle Fingers Can?t Be Wrong," featuring selections from their past catalog.   The EP is available at http://www.acetate.com.

"It's been a rough few years for us, but that means more angry rock for you to enjoy! So batten down the hatches, lock up your wives and trim the hedges! The Supersuckers are fucking BACK!!!," concluded Spaghetti.

The new album will be released at the end of 2013.

Mavis Staples releases “One True Vine” TODAY & Plays Hideout Block Party/AV Fest

Mavis Staples ONLY Chicago performance of 2013 will be at the Hideout Block Party/AV Fest!
Get your tickets NOW!

Mavis Staples has been a guiding light for all of us our entire lives.  It was overwhelming to us when she decided to record her 2008 live album the Hideout.  "Hope at the Hideout” was released it on election night, November 4, 2008.  Jeff Tweedy and Wilco were in the audience that magical night.  That night at the Hideout, Jeff and Mavis decided to record some songs together.  This amazing relationship, led to the Grammy winning “You Are Not Alone”, and now to today’s release of “One True Vine”.   And the reviews are amazing!

Jon Pareles in the New York Times says:  “Far Celestial Shores,” written for Ms. Staples by Nick Lowe, envisions heaven not only as a realm of abundance and joy, but also as “a place I know for certain I will someday see.” …determinedly celebratory…as a whole, “One True Vine” is as introspective and diffident as a gospel album can be. Bravely and intimately, it leaves room for doubt.
Rolling Stone says: “One True Vine shows there isn't much the ex-Staple Singer can't make gorgeous...”

NPR says: “the album blooms into something more celebratory — as Staples begins to find salvation and comfort — the joy in One True Vine peeks through like slivers of sunshine.”

The Guardian UK says: “We think it's great”

Mavis Staples has had a 60 year career where she marched with Martin Luther King and helped change America and the world.  She has become the vine that ties generations, races and genders together.
She has decided to make the Hideout her home. We are beyond honored!
For the next week you can enter a raffle to win a pair of tickets to the party!  Donations will benefit the Betty Hemmert Memorial Music Scholarship Fund at Rock For Kids
The new album is available for purchase here.
