SHOWS ON OUR RADAR: Common Shiner Album Release at Schubas 2/2/13

Chicago-based indie rock band Common Shiner will be celebrating the release of Before They Sold Out (Part 2) with a show at Schuba's Tavern, 3159 North Southport Ave, on Saturday, February 2nd at 10PM CST.
Click here for tickets and full show details

The album, which was produced by Dan Franklin at Chicago's Strobe Recording, is Common Shiner's "epic rock" follow up to 2011's more intimate, folk-oriented Before They Sold Out (Part 1).

Common Shiner, which formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2002, takes inspiration from smart, pop-oriented groups like Death Cab for Cutie and Ben Folds Five but isn't afraid to turn up the volume and tear down the walls just like their more rock/punk influences Rise Against and Motion City Soundtrack.

Called "Absolutely Captivating" by Chicago's influential Fearless Radio, Common Shiner is thinking big in 2013 and Before They Sold Out (Part 2) is the band's "Go Big or Go Home" album.

Quotes /
"New York trio Bear In Heaven turns its synthesizers into a full orchestra. Leader Jon Philpot uses his voice as an instrument, opting for patterns over melodies, and guitars recall the Cure while reaching for the stars." LA Times

"The band created an impromptu dance club setting, with an extraordinarily visceral onslaught of pounding kick drums and distorted bass lines that had much of the room, and frontman Jon Philpot in particular, dancing in earnest." Boston Globe

"Another outstanding entry from the electro-enclave, Brooklyn-based Bear in Heaven's I Love You, It's Cool is a slick ride—harder to brush off than the "aw, shucks" title suggests" Filter

"Its songs are sweet, reasonably simple and charmingly buzzy, with each whirring synth wrapped around a core of pure pop" NPR

"Melody, texture, and groove, yet I have not the slightest idea how to dance to it — making it a glorious electro-pop mystery" Esquire

HELP LOCALLY: The Bright White at Schubas 18+

Chicago's The Bright White have organized the second annual Warm, Safe and Sound, a concert/clothing drive featuring some of the city's top bands, including co-headliners Panda Riot and openers Panther Style. The show will take place on Thursday, Dec. 20 at Schuba's Tavern at 7PM. Cover is $8 with the donation of winter gear for the needy.

Panda Riot formed in Philadelphia while Brian Cook and Rebecca Scott were working on some short films. Soundtracks turned into songs and Panda Riot was born. They picked up a drum machine, a couple of guitars, and the result was She Dares All Things, a collection of bedroom recorded songs. A move to Chicago saw the addition of Justin Cheng on Bass and Jose Rodriguez on Aux percussion. Last year they dropped the Far and Near Ep. This year they are currently working on a new record entitled Northern Automatic Music.

Comprised of four working class guys who proudly wear their hearts on their sleeves, Chicago's The Bright White debuted in 2011. Frontman Matthew James and guitarist Joe O'Leary dreamt up the concept of combining elements of power pop and post-punk months before drummer Steve Zelenko and bassist Peter Krutiak responded to a Craigslist ad for a rhythm section.
The Bright White released their second album, Lose Yourself, in the summer of 2012. They look forward to connecting with audiences who have been waiting for sing-along choruses, fist-in-the-air guitar solos and the swagger of a band who knows its best days are ahead: "The Bright White make power pop music, with the power part made bold and underlined. This is a band that sounds hungry. Starving, even. For every catchy chorus and guitar hook, there's a sense of urgency--almost a ferocity--that goes along with it to make it clear that they know exactly what they want to do." (Windy City Rock)

The New Folk (Todd Kessler) LIVE at Schubas #HDvideo #showshots

The New Folk (Todd Kessler) LIVE at Schubas 8/27/12   ChiIL Live Shows.com

Chi-Town's own Todd Kessler's been making waves on NBC’s The Voice this season as part of Team CeeLo (@TeeamCeeLo)!

Back at the end of August, The New Folk rocked Schubas with their CD release party, as part of a the Monday night residency series, and ChiIL Live Shows has exclusive, unreleased stills and HD videos right here.

Check out our past coverage here.

New Folk celebrated the release of their debut album Sea Fever with an August 2012 “Practice Space Presents:” residency at Schubas, but the story behind The New Folk began in 2005 as Singer/Songwriter Todd Kessler went in to the studio to record his debut album. That album, entitled We Are The MusicMakers, was released in 2006 and with the backing of his original band helped Kessler to make his name and music known in the local Chicago music scene. In 2007 and 2008, in the midst of touring the Midwest, Kessler teamed up with Producer Greg “G-Ball” Magers to record his next two albums, The Veronika EP and Boomerang, only garnering him more praise and recognition on the road and at home.

It was while recording The Veronika EP that The New Folk began to take root with the addition of Bob Parlier on Drums, Sam Smiley on Guitar and Graham Burris on Bass. The quartet began playing out in 2008 in support of Boomerang, still under the name of Todd Kessler, but it was during the next two years and the addition of a String section (Elana Hiller and Chris Bauler), a Horn section (David Ben-Porat and Ben Bell Bern) and a second vocalist (Molly Parlier) that the band began to make waves with their signature Alt-Folk-Pop sound. 2009’s double-single release Golden Bird, along with headlining shows at Schubas, Lincoln Hall, Double Door and Millennium Park, solidified the bands place as a respected group in Chicago, and in 2010, the band began playing shows under the name Todd Kessler and the New Folk.

With over two years, countless shows and a slew of new material, the band, now billed simply as The New Folk, teamed up with producer Manny Sanchez to begin work on their debut album, Sea Fever, in August of 2010. Two years and hundreds of studio hours later later, Sea Fever was released in August under Kessler’s label Wyzguy Records.

*Apologies for missing a bit of the beginnings of some of the tracks.   I was originally just going to splice shorter bits in to a video interview, but there have been so many requests for the whole songs I decided to run them intact.

Maximo Park LIVE at Schubas #show photos

ChiIL Live Shows original shots--Maximo Park at Schubas, Chicago 9/17/12

NEW MAXIMO PARK ALBUM “THE NATIONAL HEALTH” IN STORES NOW.

ChiIL Live Shows just had the great pleasure of catching Maximo Park's Chi-town show.   Despite being booked for the Monday after 3 raucous days of Riot Fest, in a torrential downpour, they played to a packed house at Schubas.    This is one of the strongest shows we've seen recently in an intimate venue.

They have a compelling, original sound with a heavier, edgier Joe Jackson tinge.   Lead singer, Paul Smith's witty and literate banter between songs had the audience cracking up.   Their lyrics are insightful and genuine and their danceable riffs are impossible to resist.   Couple that with intensity, talent and stage presence, and you've got a winning combination.   Maximo Park is one to watch.

Check back with ChiIL Live Shows like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.   We'll have a full review of The National Health up in the very near
future.

"The album’s title track [The National Health] is the sort of runaway jittery guitar anthem that we’re not getting quite so often from the UK’s postpunkrevivalists anymore."  --- STEREOGUM

"Maxïmo Park have always been best at their fastest, when they sprint through verses into choruses and back out again just as quickly. That's thanks mostly to singer Paul Smith, who has a unique ability to slip into controlled mania like a jockey cracking a whip.”  --- PITCHFORK

“Maxïmo Park live at the crossroads of Joy Division, Franz Ferdinand and early Joe Jackson…”  - ROLLING STONE

"Maximo Park are back with their quintessential furiously fast-paced indie rock – and it’s great."
--- MUSO'S GUIDE

Straight To The Sun Records celebrate Maximo Park's first USA tour in over 5 years and the release of their brand new album “The National Health” on 8.28.12.

Their videos are truly creative works of art.   Check out their humorous new video featuring the concept of a crazed, obsessed fan, set to their addictive and endearing new song, "Hips and Lips".

The Minneapolis band has quickly made their way to the head of the Twin Cities music scene, landing the cover story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and being named the area’s “Best New Band” by Minneapolis City Pages. Night Moves--John Pelant (guitars/vocals), Micky Alfano (bass) and Mark Ritsema (multi-instrumentalist)--joined producer/mixer Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Beachwood Sparks, Devendra Banhart) in Los Angeles by way of their first appearances at South By Southwest to tighten and brighten the ten-track album, which the band had begun on their own before signing to Domino earlier this year.

08-13-2012 Common Shiner
Brand new Acoustic album out now! Although the individual members of Common Shiner hail from different cities, in 2008 they decided to make Chicago, IL they're musical home. It's here that they've crafted their sound and came up with the notion that Pop music can be more than just a hook…it can be meaningful as well. Influenced by not only the music they listen to, but also by their friends and the wonderful community of artists they've discovered through local shows and open mics, Common Shiner is ready to bring their music and bare their souls to the world. Having recently released an acoustic album "Before They Sold Out (Part 1)" full of brand new material, Common Shiner is showing just what can be done with a song when it's stripped to its core. Their calendar is planned with playing all the shows they can in their great region of the Midwest, and later in the year recording another full-length album….this time with all their instruments.
