Since the sudden death of his favorite student, high-school teacher Larry Morrow has been falling asleep at his desk and dreaming. Steve, the school's guidance counselor, hangs inspirational posters designed to help everyone "process their emotions” while the student's sister and friends find little solace in their schoolwork. The Dream of the Burning Boy is a bittersweet story of choices made, opportunities lost, and finding the strength to move on.

The Dream of the Burning Boy received its World premiere in March 2011 as part of Roundabout Underground, Roundabout Theatre's initiative to nurture new plays by emerging writers. Playwright David West Read, a native of Toronto, currently resides as a Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellow at The Juilliard School, and a recent graduate of the MFA program in Dramatic Writing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The Dream of the Burning Boy was developed at the 2010 National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Mr. Read currently works on a commission for South Coast Repertory.

Directed by Profiles Co-Artistic Director Joe Jahraus, the cast of The Dream of the Burning Boy  features Co-Artistic Director Darrell W. Cox as Larry and Profiles ensemble member Eric Burgher as Steve. Also featured are guest artists Marilyn Bass, Sarah Chalcroft, Joel Collins, Vic Kuligoski and Alaina Stacey.

“The Dream of the Burning Boy was my first fully-produced play in New York, and I am thrilled to be making my Midwest premiere with the same play just two years later,” says playwright David West Read. “Profiles Theatre has been home to many great plays and playwrights in recent years, and with this company at the helm, I am confident that my work is in very good hands.”

The designers are Shaun Renfro (set), Mike Durst (lights), Jeffrey Levin (sound and original music), and Raquel Adorno (costumes). Jessica Winn is the stage manager and Harmony France serves as assistant director.

The Dream of the Burning Boy is the fourth production of Profiles Theatre’s 24th season. The final show of the season, the World premiere of Resident Artist Neil LaBute’s revised stage version of In the Company of Men, opens May 16, 2013 at Profiles newest venue, The Main Stage.

ABOUT PROFILES THEATRE

Profiles Theatre, founded in 1988 by Artistic Director Joe Jahraus, joined shortly thereafter by Artistic Director Darrell W. Cox, was formed as an actor-driven theatre ensemble dedicated to creating provocative and emotionally truthful productions. Passionate about shaping an original vision for new works, they focused on performing World, American and Midwest premieres as well as rarely performed plays. Critically acclaimed hits, such as BLACKBIRD, FAT PIG, GRACELAND and the multiple Jeff Award-winning KILLER JOE, established Profiles as a destination for challenging and edgy theatre. Their unique collaboration with playwright Neil LaBute led the ensemble to perform an entire season of his plays in 2007-2008. Now a Resident Artist at Profiles, LaBute remains an unequivocal artistic influence on the ensemble.

After performing at 4147 North Broadway for more than two decades, Profiles acquired an adjacent theatre at 4139 North Broadway in 2012. Profiles’ new theatre, The Main Stage, with its larger seating capacity, increased performance space and higher ceilings, accommodates more ambitious and technically demanding productions. Their long-time venue, renamed The Alley Stage, continues as the home for plays strengthened by a more intimate staging. Driven by an undiminished appetite for creating honest and resonant theatre, Profiles still seeks to present work that illuminates the determination and resiliency of the human spirit.

ACT OUT: HELLCAB Opens at Profiles Theatre

Hellcab
by Will Kern
directed by Darrell W. Cox

Profiles Theatre newest venue
The Main Stage
4139 N. Broadway

I saw Hellcab waaaay back in the day with a theatre friend of mine who still goes by the name Hellwomann, and I'll never forget how hard we laughed.    We can't wait to see what Profiles brings to the 20th anniversary production.   This quirky, cool slice of Chi-Town life makes for some seriously fun insights into human nature.   We'll be there tomorrow for press night and we'll have a full recap.

Hellcab presents a day in the life story of a cab driver in for the longest night of his life as he transports a bizarre and mysterious collection of customers through the gritty streets of Chicago. Playwright Will Kern draws from personal experience as a former cab driver to create this alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant journey. Throughout his long shift, the eclectic collection of passengers includes a trio of drug-addicts, a smug lawyer, a born-again couple, and a randy couple on their way to a motel. Set during a bitter cold Christmas Eve, Hellcab presents a rear-view image mirroring the passing parade of humanity.

Profiles presents the 20th Anniversary production of Kern’s landmark play. First produced as a late-night show by Famous Door Theatre in 1992, the play was originally scheduled for twelve performances and ended up running for over nine years, becoming one of the longest running shows in Chicago theatre history. Hellcab has been performed all over the U.S. and abroad, including Scotland, Israel, Singapore, and Ireland. The play won numerous awards, including a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival and was adapted for the screen by Mr. Kern in 1998.

Directed by Profiles Co-Artistic Director Darrell W. CoxHellcab will feature a cast of 34 Chicago actors. Originally performed by a cast of one driver and six ensemble members playing multiple roles as the passengers, Profiles celebrates the diversity of Chicago by filling each ensemble role with a different actor!

The cast includes Konstantin Khrustov as the driver with the passenger roles performed by Dennis Bisto, Rebecca Julia Brown, Maryann Carlson, Chris Carr, Mike Cherry, Eric J. Ciak, Alex Fisher, LJ Flora, Jeff Gamlin, Carly Jo Geer, Philena Gilmer, Charles Glenn, Rob Grabowski, Desmond Gray, Aaron Holland, Khalil Lesaldo, Kaitlyn Majoy, Jack McCabe, Christopher McMorris, Katrina V. Miller, Stephanie Monday, Joseph W. Moore III, Todd Neal, Brennan Roche, Sarai Rodriguez, Andrew L. Saenz, Sheridan Singleton, Adam Soule, Aaron Spencer, Elise Spoerlein, Scott Stockwell, Rachel Weeks and Jin You.

The designers are Shaun Renfro (set), Mike Durst (lights), Jeffrey Levin (sound and original music), and Raquel Adorno (costumes). Jordan Muller is the stage manager and Eric Burgher and Harmony France serve as assistant directors.

PROFILES THEATRE
Sweet and Sad (Midwest Premiere)
by Richard Nelson
Directed by Joe Jahraus

ChiIL Live Shows had the great pleasure of seeing Sweet and Sad on opening night.   This is one of the most eloquent memorials to 9/11 out there.   The truths that lie in the things spoken, the things forgotten, and the things remembered but left unsaid, speak volumes.   Truly, memorials may stand and mark the scene of tragedies large enough to reshape the world,   but the purest memorials lie in the works of art, theatre, music, spoken and written word that arise from the effects on real people.    Sweet and Sad deals with losses as intimate and personal as the suicide of a child and the slow loss of a life time's worth of memories, and with mass losses like the death toll of 9/11 and our country's loss of innocence, invincibility and sense of security.
Sweet and Sad
is a
thought provoking
must see.

The scene opens on a stark and barren stage, leaving everything to the audience's imagination.   Then the trappings of polite society are unfurled, physically and metaphorically, as an Oriental rug is rolled out, a table is set for a large, family brunch, and a buffet of real food is paraded out.   As the Apple extended family digs in to their meal and each other,  the audience becomes a fly on the wall, in this highly engaging, realistic, family ritual.   It's amazing just how effectively Profiles was able to pull off a theatre in the round production in their intimate, new space.   The banter and timing come off realistically, and there are certainly funny moments and more than a few chuckles of recognition of real life "characters".

We thought Robert Breuler was a particular stand out with his zen-like, live in the moment, amnesiac.

Of course, with another impending 9/11 anniversary next week and the election buzz in full swing, this show is as timely as ever.   In fact, they are adding a special extra 9/11 performance.

Tuesday, September 11 at 8 pm. The event will feature pre-show appetizers
and cocktails at 6:30 pm and a post-show discussion with the cast and director.

Now that Profiles has new digs, they're off to a great start to their 24th season, with two openings in rapid succession.   ChiIL Live Shows will be there for opening night of After tonight (9/5) and we'll have a full review shortly.

Profiles Theatre continues 24th Season
with the Midwest premiere
 of After by Chad Beckim
directed by Matt Hawkins

Profiles Theatre announces the Midwest premiere of After by Chad Beckim, the second show of the company’s 2012-2013 season.  After, directed by guest artist Matt Hawkins, runs August 31-October 14, 2012.   Performances are held at Profiles original venue, The Alley Stage, 4147 N. Broadway.

When a wrongfully imprisoned man is exonerated by DNA evidence after seventeen years in prison, he is forced to re-assimilate into a cold, foreign world of toothbrush shopping, doggy day care, and a friendship with an anxious young woman with secrets of her own. After is a compassionate portrait of a man struggling with the challenges of socializing and the anger he still feels for having his youth unjustly destroyed.

After, written by Chad Beckim, received its World premiere production in September 2011 by Partial Comfort Productions in New York where he is co-Founder and co-Artistic DirectorHis playwriting credits include …a matter of choice`nami and Lights Rise on Grace which won Outstanding Play at the 2007 New York International Fringe Festival and finalist for the 2007 Princess Grace Award. Chad holds an MFA in Playwriting from Mac Wellman’s Brooklyn Colleges Program and in July 2007, he was named one of 50 Playwrights to Watch by the Dramatists Guild.

“There’s a delicate balance to my work; a dark, often bare-knuckle aesthetic entwined with levity, heart and hope,” says playwright Chad Beckim.  “This is particularly true in the slippery landscape of After which demands a bold production team. Like any playwright, I’ve longed to find a home in Chicago, and am thrilled that Profiles Theatre—a company with a rich history of staging similarly daring voices and intrepid worlds – has carved out space for my baby.  I’m eager to see how audiences of such a theatrically savvy company in such a theatrically savvy town embrace this story.”

The designers are Dan Stratton (set), Bekki Lambrecht (lights), Jeffrey Levin (sound and original music), and Brittany Bodley (costumes).  Krissy Larson is the stage managerand Elise Spoerlein serves as assistant director.

BABES WITH BLADES KICKS OFF 15th ANNIVERSARY SEASON  WITH “SUSAN SWAYNE AND THE BEWILDERED BRIDE”

WORLD PREMIERE OF REINA HARDY’S VICTORIAN DETECTIVE COMEDY

Dig Sherlock in skirts, and cutthroat killers in corsettes?   Then you must see Susan Swayne and The Bewildered Bride.   There's plenty of Victorian murder, mayhem and mystery afoot in this detective drama.  And the gender bending, cross dressing is worthy of The Bard himself.

ChiIL Live Shows had the great privileged of checkin' out opening night and we were thoroughly entertained.   The stage combat and sword play is  exhilarating and intense while the characters are as amusing as they are confusing.   We enjoyed the well written script and quirky sleuthing.   From opium dens to underwear duels, this show is highly recommended!   There are some mature sexual themes and simulated violence but nothing too over the top for older kids.   If in doubt, come check it out first.

Babes With Blades Theatre Company (BWBTC), Chicago’s all-female stage combat ensemble, will open their 15th anniversary season with the world premiere of “Susan Swayne and the Bewildered Bride” by Reina Hardy, directed by Dan Foss.

It’s 1888 in London, and the Society of Lady Detectives meets discreetly to indulge its members’  tastes for swordplay and sleuthing.  As the genteel club considers a disturbing series of murders in the Whitechapel district, a frantic heiress turns up with a startling accusation towards one of their own.  Society member Susan Swayne takes the case, defying societal norms and pursuing the truth through the Victorian streets.

Combat sequences from violence designer/BWBTC ensemble member Libby Beyreis will feature smallsword and bartitsu (a Victorian mixed martial art influenced by jujitsu and savate).

Tickets are $20 for regular performances, students and seniors $12.

Originally submitted to BWBTC’s inaugural Joining Sword & Pen Playwriting Competition in 2005, “Susan Swayne and the Bewildered Bride” began as a one-act play inspired by a print of Emile Bayard’s “An Affair of Honor.”  The script was selected for the company’s New Plays Development Program in 2009 and became a full-length play through a series of three readings and feedback sessions.  Director Foss describes the resulting script as “a quirky Victorian detective comedy.”

The cast includes BWBTC ensemble members Lisa Herceg, Kimberly Logan, and  Megan Schemmel, joined by guest artists Kathryn Acosta, Justine Serino, and Kelly Yacono.
