Break Anchor Sept. 21st Chicago - Viaduct Theater w/ Still Alive, Dead Ellington #punk

CHI, IL LIVE SHOWS ON OUR RADAR.   SAVE THE DATE 9/21.

Break Anchor has announced some Midwestern tour dates beginning September 19 in the band's hometown of Detroit.

Break Anchor, fronted by Jay Navarro of The Suicide Machines, released Blackhearts and Blackouts via Paper + Plastick records in March. The band then released Viva La Rustbelt on SideOneDummy Records.

Break Anchor - Blackhearts and Blackouts
March 20, 2012
Paper + Plastick Records

"Even with a hint of familiarity though, Blackhearts and Blackouts doesn’t sacrifice its heart for cheap gimmicks or faulty intentions – and that is all we can really ask for." -AbsolutePunk.net

More about Break Anchor:
When Jay Navarro, the singer/frontman of the Suicide Machines and Hellmouth, finally hit bottom and came out of a haze of booze, pills, anger and depression, he had a fresh outlook. He wrote a song so full of melody and so full of angst, he felt he had found himself again. “A Failure Of Epic Proportions” is a song about the Midwest American experience of growing into adulthood.

Thinking nobody would want to hear a song like this from him, or maybe anyone for that matter, he turned to longtime friend Cris Golan (The Story So Far and King For A Day) to play bass.

“I didn’t think anybody else in Detroit would get what I was trying to go for but Cris,” Navarro said. “I was aiming for early East Bay pop-punk like Crimpshrine, Operation Ivy, and yes...Green Day, and then mix in some Smashing Pumpkins.” Through a mutual friend, they hooked up with Kyle Green (Seized Up). Kyle brought a new perspective that would round out the trio of Break Anchor’s writing style. Late night jam sessions in the garage ensued, fueled by beer and always ending in a drunken listening party of old and new punk favorites.

With Jason and Kyle singing and handling guitar duties together, it became a wrestling match of dual vocals comparable to punk steadymen Hot Water Music and other such bands. Dan Stover (Seized Up) signed on to play drums and this Motor City rust belt machine was complete. Creating a fresh sound, unlike most Midwest offerings, Break Anchor will make you want to crack open a PBR or stare deep into the eyes of a bottle of whiskey, grab your best friend and sing along at the top of your lungs, “I'M FAILING!!”

The Return of the Kings:

Fanfare Ciocarlia, the brass orchestra from the village of Zece Prajini in northeastern Romania, is one of the world's foremost live Gypsy bands. And finally, they’re back.
They were first introduced to North American audiences in 2001 and 2003 as part of the hugely successful Gypsy Caravan Tour. Now, after nine years away, the ensemble returns for an eight-city tour in the U.S. and Canada, including stops in New York, Toronto, Quebec City, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Minneapolis in September 2012.
“Fanfare Ciocarlia's wicked fast trumpets, tenor and baritone horns, tubas, clarinets, saxophones, bass drum and percussion from the Carpathian mountains are a sight and sound to behold,” explains tour producer and New York Gypsy Festival founder Mehmet Dede. “This tour is way overdue for the beloved Gypsy brass band tradition.”

Everyone who has heard Fanfare Ciocarlia agrees on one thing: No brass band plays as fast. Their breakneck speed, technical chops, ripping rhythms and sweet ‘n’ sour horns set the group apart, winning them fans from Borat (they covered “Born To Be Wild” for the 2006 film) to serious music scholars. They have helped unite the best voices in Romany music on stage in two wildly popular musical theater pieces: The Gypsy Queens & Kings and the Balkan Brass Battle (which saw them battle it out on stage with Boban Markovic Orkestar). Their sound has been sampled, covered, championed, and emulated by countless DJs, bands, and Gypsy orchestras. Their radical reinterpretations of popular Western standards like the James Bond Theme and Duke Ellington’s "Caravan" show how this Romanian orchestra can effortlessly put a Gypsy spin on any music they get their horns on.

This flexibility and skill at integrating diverse sounds into their own solid traditions has a long history. The Roma ancestors of Fanfare Ciocarlia's musicians were enslaved in Romania by the likes of notorious Prince Vlad Dracul, staunch opponent of the Ottomans. In their new land, they continued to create their own intricate version of the brass music once played by the janissaries.
Granted their freedom in the mid-19th century, the liberated Roma spread across Europe and beyond, or settled in small villages like Zece Prajini. They kept their distinct musical traditions, inspiring the musicians, poets and artists around them while remaining mistrusted, mistreated, and misunderstood.
“Sometimes when I tell people I come from Zece Prajini, they think I come from the end of the earth,” says trumpeter Costic “Cimai” Trifan. “But here, at the end of the earth, is the right place to make music.”
And there’s lots of music making going on. Despite DJs, CDs, and electronic keyboards, live traditional music still occupies an important place in everyday life in communities like Zece Prajini. A wedding or other celebration without musicians would be simply unthinkable.
Fanfare Ciocarlia’s thumping bass, driving percussion and spinning horn solos plunge listeners straight into the uproarious world of Romanian Gypsy parties, which can last for thirty hours at a stretch. Their repertoire is a musical fireworks display of traditional dances from Romania and rhythms from Turkey, Bulgaria, and Macedonia, yet with ever changing innovation inspired by everything from Bollywood to Eurovision.

Fanfare Ciocarlia has won the prestigious BBC-3 Planet Award in the European category. Many of their eight albums have topped the European World Music charts, and they have played a marathon number of shows, with more than 1,200 concerts in fifteen years.

Simply put: nobody does it better, harder, faster, funkier than Fanfare Ciocarlia!

Tour produced by NY Gypsy Festival. Generous support for this tour provided by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.

Smoking Popes & SideOneDummy Reissue the Classic Born To Quit October 23rd w/ Deluxe Package - National Tour This Fall

“Did you ever hear Born to Quit? It’s by the Smoking Popes. I thought that album was extraordinary, the most lovable thing I’d heard in years.” -Morrissey

The Smoking Popes are pleased to announce the re-issue of their landmark album Born To Quit on SideOneDummy Records October 23rd. The album was their first on a major label after they signed to Capitol Records, and it was a doozy, the first single ‘Need You Around” quickly went into heavy rotation on radio flagships like Chicago’s Q101 and KROQ in Los Angeles.

Praise from SPIN, Alternative Press, Rolling Stone and Billboard arrived and later that year the single was featured in the movie Clueless. The remastered album comes with a deluxe repackaging featuring new artwork, a memorabilia collage, new liner notes from Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Joe Shanahan (Chicago’s Metro) and comedian Kyle Kinane as well as a track-by-track analysis by Popes’ frontman Josh Caterer and two bonus tracks (Willie Nelson cover “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground” and the previously unreleased duet “Blanket In The Park”).

There will be limited edition red and blue vinyl in addition to a CD. Red vinyl will be for sale at www.SideOneDummy.com while blue vinyl will be available on tour.

To celebrate the release, the band will hit the road this fall and play Born To Quit in its entirety every night, followed by a set of other songs from the band’s catalog. Says Josh Caterer, "I'm excited about playing the album start-to-finish every night on tour. That's the way it's meant to be heard. These shows are gonna be a blast!"

Smoking Popes built a relationship with their legion of fans and fellow musicians by melding raw songs about bittersweet heartache with soaring melodies, power chords and punk spirit. Smoking Popes influenced the likes of Alkaline Trio, Dashboard Confessional and Motion City Soundtrack during a career marked with critical raves from their fellow musicians and the press. Los Angeles Times said it well, “Ever wonder what a traditional saloon singer would sound like backed up by a punk band? The Smoking Popes take that concept one step further: They've created a unique kind of music that some listeners are describing as ‘hyperkinetic tear-jerkers.’"

Smoking Popes, the heart of which is the three Caterer brothers – Matt, Eli, and Josh – first burst onto the scene in 1991 and released several albums on various independent labels. They signed to Capitol Records in 1995 and re-released their landmark album Born to Quit to an even larger fan base gained by touring with bands like Jawbreaker and Jimmy Eat World. In 1997, the Smoking Popes released Destination Failure, which many consider to be their defining masterpiece. This album challenged the idea of what a pop punk band could do, with songwriting that didn’t always adhere to verse-chorus-verse progression and lyrics that told tales of love and longing with heartbreaking details. To the shock of many, Smoking Popes decided to throw in the towel on December 19, 1998.  In 2005, rumors started flying that the band would perform at the Flower 15 Festival. Their sold out reunion show at Chicago’s Metro that November sparked a resurgence of Smoking Popes fans, leaving the crowd yearning for new material. The show was released as a CD/DVD.

The band was re-energized and reformed for good, releasing Stay Down in 2008 and It’s Been a Long Day, a compilation of songs released on 7” came out on Asian Man Records in 2010. 2011 brought a great new album from the Popes, who’d recently acquired a great new drummer in Neil Hennessy, who is known for his work with Lawrence Arms. This is Only a Test was perfect proof that their sparkling lyricism and ineffable charm remains intact. This is Only a Test was the Smoking Popes’ first ever concept album, exploring the life of a fictional high-schooler.

In 2012, the Popes signed to LA’s SideOneDummy Records and immediately released the Complete Control Sessions, a live EP that included their cover of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables on yellow and green vinyl while they were preparing the re-issue of Born To Quit.

Press Quotes

"FIDLAR channel elements of classic acts like the White Stripes and Pixies, while practically begging for a co-headlining tour with contemporaries like Bass Drum of Death and JEFF the Brotherhood" -SPIN

"The tune can be summed up in a handful of image descriptions; sandboarding, grim reaper, suicidal flip-up hat, skull mask, and shred." - Filter Magazine
"We all have a major music crush on FIDLAR here at VICE" - Vice.com

"They remind me of Pixies a lot (an obvious link, given the singer's Frank Black style screeeeeeam), but there's also some really, really nice'n'fuzzy guitars in there that sound like they've been nicked from the blueprint Death In Vegas followed on 'Aiesha'." - NME

"FIDLAR has an agressive, straightforward, but melodic conception of punk." - LA Times
"But one wouldn't mistake the band for one of its slacker subjects, not when they play this fast. The tracks sizzle with the aggression and bargain-price fidelity of the SoCal punk tradition, though FIDLAR's catchy hooks have more in common with Social Distortion and Wavves than Black Flag. " - MTV Buzz

“I felt like I was asleep for years,” says California Wives’ lead vocalist / keyboardist Jayson Kramer of his decision in 2009 to leave behind a promising career in medicine for a professional go at music. Jayson's first experience with music began at age 6, playing classical piano up until he was 16. Along the way he started writing songs as hobby, taking influence from bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis, and later electronic music such as Autechre and Aphex Twin. The hobby continued through his undergrad years at Boston University as a pre-med student until, "a weird thing happened when I finished my MCAT and all the studying stopped. I was completely honest with myself for the first time in my life and recognized that I had no desire to go on to medical school. This is when I took a more serious turn toward music, which is something I realized I should have been doing all along." Around this time he moved back to his hometown of Chicago where he was introduced to drummer Joe O'Connor and bassist Dan Zima, who had be playing together since high school.
