ACT OUT OPENING: Northlight Theatre’s World Premier of Stella & Lou

Rhea Perlman, Francis Guinan and Ed Flynn to appear in the World Premiere of
Northlight Theatre’s Stella & Lou

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. On a quiet night at Lou's bar, two kindred spirits seek solace as they navigate changing times and relationships past. From the author of The Outgoing Tide comes an intimate exploration of friendship, forgiveness, and the longing for companionship that grows with the passage of time.

BJ Jones comments, “When Rhea Perlman saw The Outgoing Tide last summer in Galway, she told me how much she admired Bruce's work. I immediately thought she would be perfect for the role of Stella, and upon reading it, she agreed. Now we are honored to pair her up with Fran Guinan as Lou in this poignant piece about companionship and second chances.”

ACT OUT: Northlight Theatre announces the first selections of its 2013-14 season

Northlight Theatre announces the first selections of its 2013-14 season

including a World Premiere by Christian O’Reilly, featuring John Mahoney,
Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles and
Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize winner Lost in Yonkers

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, announces three of the five productions of the 2013-14 season: Amy Herzog’s award-winning play 4000 Miles; the World Premiere of Christian O’Reilly’s Chapatti, featuring John Mahoney; and Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Lost in Yonkers. Two additional titles will be announced soon.

Northlight's connection to its audience is deep and powerful, and we hear, repeatedly, that one of the reasons for that strong relationship is the play choices,” says BJ Jones.  “Year after year our subscribers return to enjoy our work, joined by an increasing number of single ticket buyers from all over Chicagoland.  It is a season that examines intergenerational relationships with joy and keen insight, through fresh new work like 4000 Miles and Chapatti and classics like Lost in Yonkers.  And, of course, we are thrilled that our frequent collaborator John Mahoney joins us for the World Premiere of Chapatti.”

The 2012-13 season includes:
4000 Miles
by Amy Herzog
September 14 – October 20, 2013
At the end of an arduous cross-country bike trip, a rudderless 21 year-old seeks refuge in his elderly grandmother’s West Village apartment.  These two outsiders face ideological differences, but ultimately find their way together in “a beautifully rendered portrait” (The New York Times) of a cross-generational relationship.

4000 Miles was named Time Magazine's #1 Play of 2012; the winner of the Obie Award, Best New Play (2012) and received The New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award (2012).

The World Premiere of
Chapatti
by Christian O’Reilly
featuring John Mahoney
March 7 – April 13, 2014
Romance is a distant memory for two lonely animal-lovers living in Dublin.  When forlorn Dan and his dog Chapatti cross paths with amiable Betty and her nineteen cats, an unexpected spark begins a warm and gentle story about two people re-discovering the importance of human companionship.

John Mahoney returns to Northlight for this World Premiere play by the acclaimed Irish playwright Christian O’Reilly.
Lost in Yonkers
by Neil Simon
May 2 – June 8, 2014
This nostalgic memory play takes us back to the summer of 1942 – WWII is on, and Eddie, flat broke, has no alternative but to leave his sons with their grandmother while he struggles to pay off his debts.  The boys are left to contend with an ill-tempered Grandma, the sweet but damaged Aunt Bella, and Uncle Louie, a small-time hoodlum in a strange new world called Yonkers.

Lost in Yonkers won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.

ACT OUT OPENING: Northlight Theatre announces The Whipping Man

Northlight Theatre announces
The Whipping Man
Written by Matthew Lopez
Directed by Kimberly Senior

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, continues its 2012-2013 season with Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man, directed by Kimberly Senior. The production will run at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie, from January 18-February 24, 2013.

When Caleb, a wounded Confederate soldier returns to his family’s home at the end of the Civil War, he finds it in ruins and abandoned by all but two former slaves. United by their Jewish faith, the three men celebrate a Seder while wrestling with a shared past they can’t escape—and uncover a tangle of secrets that threatens their family and their faith.

Artistic Director BJ Jones comments, “There is historical precedence for the storylines in Mathew Lopez’s compelling and surprising play The Whipping Man. The context of the fallen South at the end of the Civil War, the newly freed slaves, the returning Confederate soldier - son of a Jewish slave owner, makes for an exotic and combustive cocktail for a play, which is at once gripping and intellectually satisfying.”
The cast features Derek Gaspar, Sean Parris, and Tim Edward Rhoze.

Over the past year, Kimberly Senior directed the World Premiere of Disgraced at American Theater Company and in New York; After the Revolution at Next; Cripple of Inishmaan at Redtwist; Murder on the Nile at Peninsula Players; and The Letters at Writers’ Theatre. Kimberly was, formerly, a teaching artist at Northlight Theatre.

The Whipping Man is the first play by Matthew Lopez’s to be professionally produced. He won the 2011 John Gassner Playwriting Award by the NY Outer Critics Circle. The Whipping Man was one of the most produced plays in the country this year.

The Whipping Man represents an important part of American History. There is record of slaves being raised Jewish, most likely if the owner was Jewish. The play takes place at the end of the Civil War and raises questions of freedom, servitude and identity for all the characters.

In conjunction with The Whipping Man, Northlight is hosting a number of special events with community partners. All events are subject to change, and new events may be added. For up-to-date details, visit northlight.org/events.

ACT OUT EXTENDED: The Odd Couple at Northlight

Due to overwhelming demand
Northlight Theatre adds a week of performances of
The Odd Couple

written by Neil Simon and directed by BJ Jones
featuring an all-Chicago cast of the City’s best comedic actors

Now running through December 16, 2012

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, announces a one-week extension of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, featuring comic actors Tim Kazurinsky and Marc Grapey as the famously mismatched roommates.  The comedy, directed by Artistic Director BJ Jones will play at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie, through December 16, 2012.

When recently-failed marriages lead famously mismatched roommates Oscar and Felix into sharing an apartment, Felix’s finicky habits and Oscar’s slovenly ways make for a disastrous yet side-splittingly funny combination in this beloved comedy by Neil Simon.  The Chicago cast of comic actors includes Tim Kazurinsky (Felix), Marc Grapey (Oscar), Bruce Jarchow (Roy), Peter DeFaria (Murray the Cop), William Dick(Vinnie), Molly Glynn (Cecily), Katherine Keberlein (Gwen) and Phil Ridarelli (Speed)

“We are thrilled that tickets are in such high demand,” says BJ Jones.  “This is a distinguished ensemble of Chicago's great comedic actors giving such rich and colorful portrayals in Neil Simon’s finest and funniest script.  Audiences have been loving this show.”
