INCOMING: Survay Says! Riot Fest Sunday at 1pm on The Revolt Stage #Riotfest #ChiILPicksList

Chi, IL Live Shows On Our Radar
ChiIL Live Shows ChiIL Picks List

Here at ChiIL Live Show we cover loads of large music fests every year. They're great for seeing old favorites, binging on hours of live music, and discovering new bands. We haven't seen Survey Says yet, but we're suckers for a sweet horn section, saxaphones and Ska. Check 'em out if you have a chance.

Sunday, September 14
Revolt Stage
1pm

Six members, 101 shows in 2011, 149 shows in 2012, 208 shows in 2013, and 1 unified goal: To make audiences have the most fun possible.

Survay Says! is a 6-piece ska/pop punk band from a small town called Blairstown, NJ. Originally forming in 2008 by brothers Henry & D.Jay Menzel, Survay Says! has spent the last 4 years honing their craft to bring listeners the horn-driven sound ska fans crave along with the high speed energy of pop punk. If there is one word that could sum up an SS! set, that word would be "fun", and that's exactly what the band strives for.

Considered by many to be one of the hardest working self-managed bands on the East Coast, Survay Says has supported national acts such as Less Than Jake, the Wonder Years, Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, and Bowling for Soup. Survay Says tours extensively, playing 208 shows in 2013 including a month-long run with Big D and the Kid’s Table and Red City Radio which took them to Fest 12 in Gainesville, FL.  2014 promises to be just as intense; Signed to Asbestos Records, Survay Says has already completed a two month full US tour to support the release of our new album "Observations of the Human Condition", a month long tour of the US and Canada as direct support to Reel Big Fish, and a scond full US tour since the beginning of April this year. We're spending the rest of the 2014 playing Riot Fest in Chicago, The Fest in Gainesville, FL, doing a support tour with MxPx, Zebrahead and Allister, as well as touring the full US again on our own.

Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar #ChiILPicksList

Check back with ChiIL Live Shows like we vote in Chi, IL... early and often. We'll be featuring a few acts that caught our eye... and ears. And some must see band we'll drop everything for.

Adele Stein, Ciscandra Nostalghia, Roy Gnan

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, we haven't seen Nostalghia live, but I must say we're intrigued enough to check 'em out. Other options in the 6pm Sat time slot are Wu Tang Clan, Dashboard Confessional, The Crombies & The Get Up Kids

One of the most exciting new bands to come along in some time.  If you're a fan of artists like Kate Bush, Bjork, NIN, the Knife, Mirah or post-apocalyptic gypsy punk, this is a don't-miss band.  Early supporters include Skrillex, Marilyn Manson and Amy Lee of Evanscence.  If you like discovering something exciting, daring, off-the-wall and maybe a little ahead of the curve, then this is the band to check out.

And yes. Yes we do dig post-apocalyptic gypsy punk, Siouxsie Sioux, NIN, Bjork and Kate Bush.

ABOUT NOSTALGHIA:
Nostalghia is comprised of vocalist/songwriter Ciscandra Nostalghia, keyboardist/ producer/drummer Roy Gnan, who met each other on Craig's List, and touring cellist Adele Stein.  With Gnan's BA in jazz performance and cache of instruments, computers and other electronic gear, combined with Ciscandra's artistic bravery that is the product of the collision of two entirely different worlds - Los Angeles and Tehran, Iran, they make provocative, uncompromising and cinematic music.  The band has been embraced by a wide variety of audiences, having shared the stage with artists including Jared Leto's 30 Seconds to Mars, Gogol Bordello, Green Day, The Orb, Serj Tankian, and Avenged Sevenfold. With Chrysalis, the band's debut album that was mixed by multi-Platinum producer/mixer Dave Fortman and released April 8 (110 Recordings/INgrooves), Nostalghia proves they are not your average alt/rock band.

**"...theatrical, poignant, unflinching and desperately meaningful.  Her name is Ciscandra Nostalghia and she's out of this f**king world." -
SYFFAL

"...one of the most original new artists on the music scene today,  A journey between light and dark, 'Chrysalis' has enough pop-like elements to push it forward, though with a noir and avant-garde framework...an artist with a vision and a unique style." - RockSubculture

"Euphoria meets rage on this chaotic, dramatic debut by Nostalghia.  FIVE STARS"  - Examiner

"Vocal splashes of Diamonda Galas, Kate Bush and Siouxsie Sioux, combined with the artistic freedom and sight of a Perry Farrell, Nostalghia are relevant, current and have their finger on the pulse of the future."  - PlaybackStL

INCOMING: Slayer Friday 8:45 #ChiILPicksList #RiotFest

Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar #ChiILPicksList

SLAYER
Friday, September 12
Rebel Stage
Onstage at 8:45PM

With loads of tough calls ahead for this weekend, like Slayer, Jane's Addiction & Rise Against all playing simultaneously... How DO you decide? Sometimes it's a no brainer. Or you follow your friends. Or you go with the band less likely to come back around on tour soon or the one you dig but haven't seen live.

Check back with ChiIL Live Shows like we vote in Chi, IL... early and often. We'll be featuring a few acts that caught our eye... and ears. And some must see band we'll drop everything for.

First up... our group is divided over Janes Vs. Slayer, but look these guys in the eye and tell em you're picking Perry... and things might get ugly. At this point Slayer's winning our vote.

L-R:  Gary Holt, Tom Araya, Kerry King, Paul Bostaph

Slayer has just entered the studio to record its first album since 2011's critically-acclaimed, Grammy-winning World Painted Blood This is an album of firsts - the band's first album without Jeff Hanneman, the first album to be released on the band's own label (through Nuclear Blast), and Slayer's first since 2001's God Hates Us All with returning drummer Paul Bostaph.

Slayer surprised its fans back in April by making a brand new song available as a free download - "Implode" - written by Kerry King.  You can check out "Implode" HERE.   The new album is expected out in early 2015.

For Chicago's RiotFest performance, Slayer will be joined by guitarist Gary Holt who continues to fill in for Hanneman.

ABOUT SLAYER:
The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot wrote that the five-time-nominated, two-time Grammy winning Slayer is "one of the great American rock bands of the last 30 years, forget about genre."  Their membership in "The Big Four" - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - the four bands that defined the thrash/metal genre - secures their place in music history.  Indeed, few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer brings to its live shows, having been named "Best Live Band" by numerous media outlets including RevolverSPIN, and Metal Hammer With songs that mirror the turmoil and aberrations of our society - God's terrifying global genocide, the chaos of our broken political system, chemical warfare, the hideous minds of serial killers, and the way-too-close proximity of world horrors that technology has brought us - Slayer remains crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the Mainstream. Slayer's founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2013, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in since.  Paul Bostaph, Slayer's drummer from 1992 to 2001, rejoined the band on a full-time basis in 2013.

INCOMING: LePercolateur Gypsy Jazz and Americana at Skokie Theatre 8/15

Shows on Our Radar

Chicago’s LePercolateur will bring its unique take on gypsy jazz and Americana to the Skokie Theatre on Friday, August 15:

8:00 pm
Tickets: $25

Gypsy-jazz ... alt-folk ... come discover this unique blend.

The Story of lePercolateur

As the railyard bled into dark warehouses, the stranger found himself alone. Street after street he walked with night taking control of his senses until his ears perked at the music of sirens. The dulcet tones of violin, bass, and the female voice spiraled through the darkness from the sole source of warmth in sight. Helplessly drawn in, he found the last lit trailer in camp that seemed to have sprung forth from another time, and there--in the form of three women--was both the past and the future in one.

He introduced himself as Sam Random and explained that his path and his name were inextricably linked. Sensing a kindred spirit, they proffered their names: Marielle de Rocca-Serra held the violin, Stacy McMichael propped up the bass fiddle, and it was Candace Washburn's voice that had beckoned him. As Sam sat at their fire and opened up his tattered guitar case, another man, his elder, stepped forth from the darkness having been drawn in from afar. Armed too with a guitar, he announced himself as Kevin Rush and sat with no concern as to whether he'd been invited - simply knowing he was home. Fueled by coffee black as the night they found themselves in and so dark it could have been wartime, they played through 'til the sun began painting the eastern horizon red.

Winding their caravan through the windiest of cities, lePercolateur has spent the time since this fateful night sweeping in to transport concert-goers to a time where music was a liberating and cathartic respite from persecution-- where the frenetic energy of struggling to simply 'be' coalesced with the unbridaled spirit of gypsy music and burgeoned into swing dancing. The troupe transforms Katerina's into a sold-out Parisian dance hall circa 1937 on a monthly basis.

Their high-energy sideshow has made Percolateers of attendees of the Jazz Institute of Chicago's 2011 & 2012 Jazz Tours, Andy's Jazz Club, Hard Rock Cafe Chicago, 2013 All Souls Jazz Festival, City Winery, the Mayne Stage, Jazz Showcase, Martyrs, Schubas, the 2012 Deer Park Jazz Festival, the 2010 and 2011 Chicago Cultural Center's "Music Without Borders" series, and Purdue University's Swing Dance. They were Featured Artists in both 2009 and 2011 in the Windy City Lindy Exchange, through which they flaunted their uncanny ability to seamlessly fuse two different eras via their reinterpretations of modern pop through the medium of hipster gypsy jazz. Along the way, these temporally displaced merry-makers were victorious at the Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival's "Last Banjo Standing" contest.

TOMORROW: Liquid Soul and March Fourth at Lincoln Hall (21+) #HighlyRecommended

INCOMING:
Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar Tues 6/10 at Lincoln Hall
8:00 PM   21+  $14.00

ChiIL Live Shows will be there shooting stills. It's our 14th wedding anniversary and we're way beyond jazzed to get to spend it with two of the most fun bands to see LIVE. We can't wait!  Highly recommended.

Here's some crazy cool partner acro on STILTS that we shot when March Fourth played Martyrs last year!  Check it out. Then go see them LIVE already.

Click the links below for loads of our past original photos, videos and coverage on BOTH bands.

A kaleidoscope of musical and visual energy mere “mortal” bands cannot compete with, Aside from their marching band themed costumes, and multi member drum and brass corp, M4 is far from a “marching band” in any traditional sense (though this group of about 20 has been known to parade down Main Street before taking the stage). The show will take you on a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the gypsy camps of eastern Europe and through the deepest grooves of American funk, rock, and jazz then boiling it all together in cinematic fashion with high-stepping stilt-acrobatics and dazzling dancers. They’ve headlined too many major festivals to name, multiple times, as well as playing prestigious venues from The Kennedy Center to a cultural exchange tour of China.

(We've been huge Mars Williams fans since back in the Psychedelic Furs days.   Here's Mars in orbit at Chicago Folk and Roots Fest 2011 with Soul Sonic Sirkus.)

Liquid Soul, the Grammy-nominated combo that has built its reputation on a compelling mix of jazz, hip-hop, funk and hard-bop, makes its Telarc debut with the release of One-Two Punch.

Pioneers of the acid-jazz movement during their early days in the Chicago club scene of the mid-1990s, Liquid Soul has evolved over the past dozen years into a musical compendium of sounds and styles that starts with jazz and embraces hip-hop, R&B, dance, funk, techno, world, spoken-word and much more.

Led by innovative saxophonist/composer Mars Williams, the eight-piece collective has conquered nearly every corner of the U.S. and is looking to turn up the juice in Europe and other parts of the world via their Telarc debut.

Here's the latest Via March Fourth:

My, what a busy summer!
MarchFourth is on a mission to visit each and every one of you this year it seems (more info about the US fall tour coming soon). Seriously. It will take a lot of scrolling to get to the bottom of this show list! From San Diego, California to Portland, Maine to Tampa, Florida, and from the mountains of Telluride, CO (8700 ft) to the streets of New Orleans, LA (0 ft) and everywhere in between, there's a pretty good chance we're headed your way (except maybe the southwest, since we just returned from there). Let's hope the A/C in the bus is fixed for good this time, because this summer is going to be HOT!!!

For a little taste of life on the road with M4, I suggest you check out stilter/stunter Phill's blogHe's kind of new to M4, joining after stilt veteran Sid Simpatico retired last summer due to a knee injury. Phill's been writing these great tour recap posts on Facebook for a while, but now he's taken to the blogosphere. I'm sure there will be much to write about this summer, so keep an eye there to follow our adventures! Here's a video from our birthday show this year of Phill and the gang doing stilt acro to "Surfunk" (a newish song by Taylor Aglipay).

PLEASE DON'T TELL MY LOVER

GQ MAGAZINE'S 25 BEST SONGS OF THE SUMMER

BAND PERFORMING AT BONNAROO, AUSTIN CITY LIMITS & MORE

NEW EP HOW GOOD DOES IT FEEL OUT JUNE 17TH
ON CHOP SHOP / ISLAND RECORDS

Empires are thrilled to announce they'll make their TV debut on The Late Show with David Letterman on June 17th! That same day, Chop Shop / Island Records will release the band's new EP How Good Does It Feel - a collection of songs that will appear on their major label debut Orphan out later this year.

A band hand-picked early on by NPR Music as one their 100 acts to see at SXSW this year, Empires new single "How Good Does It Feel" was recently named one of the 25 Best Songs of the Summer by GQ Magazine.

Stereogum is now streaming "Please Don't Tell My Lover" - a new song from the EP which they rave, "Empires make timeless music - upbeat yet melancholy, pleasant but not saccharine, lyrics tangled up in the messy business of romance ... these guys have their own thing going, though, and that thing is highly appropriate for the summer that is about to unfold before us."

Empires have already played the Hangout and Bottle Rock Music Festivals, toured with Margot & The Nuclear So and So's and are looking forward to performing at this year's Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits Music Festivals. The band will also hit the road with The Chain Gang of 1974 this July.

The EP (and upcoming LP) was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The War On Drugs and The Black Angels) and will be available in digital and on limited edition 10" vinyl. Visit iTunes, Spotify and www.weareempires.com for more info.
