The show employs high-definition, cutting-edge projection technology and has an engaging narrative structure. Produced by Moya Doherty, devised and directed by John McColgan with narrative and lyrics by award-winning Irish writer Joseph O'Connor. Joseph comments: 'when we marry the sexiness of salsa to the thunder of Irish dance, the lyricism of tango to the yearning of Sean-nós, what a night of storytelling we shall have'.

Sting: The Last Ship will air on Great Performances, Friday, February 21, 2014 at 8 p.m., CT on PBS

Sting: The Last Ship

Sting: The Last Ship will air on Great Performances, Friday, February 21, 2014 at 9 p.m., ET on PBS (check local listings) and features the 16-time Grammy Award-winning musician performing songs from his new album, The Last Ship, and forthcoming play of the same name in an intimate evening of music and storytelling live at The Public Theater in New York City.
The Last Ship will open on Broadway in the fall of 2014, following a pre-Broadway world premiere from Tuesday, June 10 – Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre.  Here at ChiIL Live Shows we can NOT wait to see this one!  Got your tickets yet?

Watch Sting Sing “The Last Ship”

He is joined by a 14-piece band, many of whom also hail from the North East region (Kathryn Tickell on violin and Northumbrian pipes, Peter Tickell on violin and mandolin, Julian Sutton on the melodeon, and vocalists The Wilson Family), including actor and singer Jimmy Nail, who will appear in the upcoming stage production. Also featured is Musical Director Rob Mathes on acoustic guitar, piano and keyboards, and background vocals.

The evening was filmed on Sting’s birthday (October 2) at a special fan club performance during a 10-night run of benefit concerts that immediately became one of New York’s hottest tickets. The Public Theater’s Artistic Director Oskar Eustis observed at the time, “The Last Ship is shaping up to be a masterpiece, both an elegy for and a celebration of the working class life of the Newcastle shipyards.”

Sting has crafted a richly diverse musical landscape for a close-knit community of original characters. With a backdrop of evocative visual projections, he shares his experience emerging from a songwriting hiatus to pen his first album of original material in nearly a decade and his very first musical theater score, incorporating a mix of genres and styles ranging from pub-like folk tunes to ballads to a wall of sound from the full band.

“The memories at the heart of The Last Ship have occupied my mind for most of my life,” said Sting. “I was compelled to tell this story.” Sting’s collaborators on the Broadway-bound production include the Tony-winning team of book writers John Logan (Red, I’ll Eat You Last) and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) along with director Joe Mantello (Wicked).

Of his latest album, Jim Farber of the New York Daily News opined, “The Last Ship has an intelligence, beauty and pitch-black wit that makes it both a worthy solo project and a solid blueprint for something to be fleshed out later on stage.”
Sting has appeared in more than 15 films, executive produced the critically acclaimed A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and in 1989 starred in The Threepenny Opera on Broadway.
An accomplished author, he published a memoir entitled Broken Music in 2003, which spent 13 weeks on The New York Times best-sellers list. In 2007, he released Lyrics, a comprehensive collection of lyrics accompanied by personal commentary and photos.

Directed by Joe Mantello and produced by Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker, The Last Ship is set against the demise of the local Wallsend shipbuilding industry and tells the story of a group of unemployed shipyard workers who are inspired to take back their shipyard and build one last ship – not for their former employer, not for the government, but for their own pride and humanity.

ACT OUT OPENING: Ghost The Musical #BroadwayInChicago

Ghost the musical hits Chicago tonight, just as the arctic vortex is lifting.   We'll be reviewing tomorrow night at the press opening and can't wait to see the stage adaptation.   We just watched the movie again, since we love to play the same/different game and see how the basic plot line, special effects and more are adapted for the Broadway version.   I always dug this movie.   Demi Moore had a rockin' urban loft, and aside from the dead boyfriend tragedy, her character in Ghost was living my dream life, so to say I could relate was an understatement.  I was already running around in overalls, making wheel pottery, and fancying myself an artist before the film came out.   The whole supernatural schtick was a cool premise too.

It's strange to see the movie again and realize that Patrick Swayze is actually deceased now.  My Location Sound Engineer husband, Dug, worked with him on his final series, The Beast, right here in Chicago, before his untimely death at a young age.   Go back and revisit this 1990 movie blast from the past, then head out to Oriental Theatre and catch the stunning supernatural stage adaptation.   We've heard the large screen, multimedia effects are pretty chill.

After seeing the illusions clip below, we're extra stoked for the Broadway touring show.

ACT OUT OPENING: We Will Rock You at Cadillac Palace #BroadwayInChicago

We Will Rock You Features Greatest Hits of Queen
by British comedian Ben Elton (The Young Ones)

Both of my tweens have been obsessed with Queen since they were toddlers, had Bohemian Rhapsody memorized in preschool, and still count Queen as their #1 favorite band.   Sadly, they'll never see Freddie Mercury, and there's no replacing his inimitable charisma, character & vocal range.  But his songs live on, and we're betting this Broadway in Chicago extravaganza will be a fun evening for sure!   We've been promoting this show for months and eagerly anticipating it.  Now we're super excited to check it out on opening night, TONIGHT.   We'll have a full review up shortly.

We're also big fans of The Young Ones and Ben Elton, who wrote this musical!   I'm afraid my kids grew up on Brit humor, 80's cult classics, animated episodes of The Tick and Pee Wee's Playhouse, when other kids were watching Barney and The Wiggles.   In spite of (or maybe because of) our family TV taste, they've morphed into some of the funniest, most delightful kids I know.

For Young Ones fans out there, my punk rock girl is Vyvyan all over and my long haired boy is Neil.   They do some hilarious scenes from the show together, but won't let me video tape 'em.   Lentils... need I say more.   My husband calls me "the people's poet" which I'll reluctantly accept, tho I hope I'm not half as pretentious.

We Will Rock You

Now in its 11th year in London and seen by a staggering 15 million people worldwide, this hilarious, multi-award-winning and record-breaking phenomenon boasts a fantastic score of killer Queen tunes that you just can't resist singing along to.  It's the world champion of musicals and the show that rocks harder than any other, so don't miss the party — book your tickets now!

We Will Rock You is recommended for ages 13+.

Ticket prices are $18 to $85.

ACT OUT CLOSING: American Idiot #review

American Idiot is Hair for the next generation.   There's a lovable band of misfits, a tragic enlistment storyline,

drug use, an inditement of capitalist America, and a celebration of individuality.

We also dug the side thread about the accidental pregnancy and the social commentary on how much having an infant changes your rock n roll lifestyle.

With a rockin' sound track of Greenday hits, Two Tony Awards, and a 2010 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, it's certainly worth catching.    Chicago's own Northwestern student, Alex Nee, stars.

There's even some fun, wire work!

Of course there are theatre fanatics out there who will only see the A list celeb Broadway shows, but we've seen some seriously sweet touring shows that just blew through town for a week or two.   The sets and costumes are still top notch and despite the fact that there aren't huge draw, famous names in the cast, there's certainly talent and charm.    The touring shows have heart, youthful energy, and the glitz and drama Broadway musicals are renowned for.

It's always a treat to see a show at the ornate Cadillac Palace.   My kids like to play rorschach test with the marble walls and find hidden creatures.   Their fav is "the elephant" at the top of the stairs to the basement in the front, left side of the lobby.

Tickets start at just $18 and half price day of show tickets, or discounts through Hot Tixs or Goldstar are often available.

So go already.

Get out and see a show in style.   Broadway in Chicago is hopping this spring with The Book of Mormon, which is one of the best shows we've seen this year if not in recent history!    We caught opening night with a couple of guys named Trey Parker and Matt Stone.   I expected it to be irreverent, but I was blown away by how relevant it was!  Book of Mormon is a no holds barred must see.

Spring also brings Jekyll & Hyde--Check out our past coverage here and also acclaimed Priscilla Queen of the Desert!
