We just shot local boys, Midwest Hype's sold out CD release party at Schubas on the 5th and it was definitely a party!    They've got a compelling blend of jazz, rock, hip hop and....sweet horns.

Here's the bio off their site:

Midwest Hype defines urban garage jazz. Hip-hop flow, unforgettable vocal melodies, punching horn lines, immaculate jazz improvisation, dance floor mayhem, tight pocketed compositions, a spectrum of all colors, a refreshing youthful breath in today's digital world. A celebration and motivation to create a better life, make the day glow.

Midwest Hype has had a string of successes recently.  Starting with a slot at Summer Camp 2010 they have played the Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Fest, the Indianapolis 500, Green Music Festival, opened for the Wailers and GIRL TALK, and performed at this year's North Coast Music Festival with Thievery Corporation, Wiz Kalifa, David Guetta and more.

ChiIL Mama/ChiIL Live Shows also had a string of successes recently, scoring press passes to shoot Summer Camp Music Fest, Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Fest and North Coast the past two years (and Lollapalooza/Kidzapalooza).  We plan to be there with camera in hand, again in 2012.

I don't play an instrument myself, but I love live shows.   I got the writing and photography/art genes instead.  My sister and Grandfather both played sax and of all the genre's I cover, write up and shoot, punk or metal with sax is my hands down fav.   I've always had a soft spot for sax with a hard, fast edge.  Can't wait to see these guys tear it up Saturday.

*speaking of killer sax........we have some amazing shots of Yakuza front man, Bruce Lamont, sans sax, as Robert Plant--in LZ2 at House of Blues from earlier this month.  We'll have a full set of show shots and a "best of" up soon.

We got some sweet crowd shots, too.    The fans even got into the whole 1975 retro vibe and held up lighters, old school style, instead of a sea of cell phones.   Loved it!

For more about this Saturday's Badfish/Scotty Don't/Full Service/Midwest Hype show, check out the bands' sites or follow them on FB and Twitter.

We highly recommend getting your tickets in advance.   When we shot Led Zeppelin 2's sold out show at HOB earlier this month, there were a lot of people turned away at the door, wishing they hadn't waited on tickets.

Chicago's F.A.M.E. Benefit at Rockit Ranch Still Seeking Performers Through Feb 15th!

Chicago's F.A.M.E. Benefit at Rockit Ranch is coming up soon on March 8th. The foundation is currently reviewing auditions for a few more performance slots in that show. The link is here : http://fame-chicago.org/3.html.  The event is being promoted by Chicago's Billy Dec & Windy City Live, so it should be an amazing night! FAME has started up to raise money to provide grants and scholarships for Chicago children in the arts.

Steffan, a young Chicago actor, model, and musician was asked to be one of the performers at the Chicago's F.A.M.E. Benefit at Rockit Ranch on March 8th.  He has his roots in musical theatre, but last year he was pulled away a bit from that when he was cast one of only five kids from thousands of auditions from across the country to represent KidzBop.

We've corresponded with his mom, via e-mail, and plan to do an in depth feature soon.   According to her, KidsBop has been an incredible opportunity for him, but his true dream is to share his original work as a solo artist one day. He is an incredible musician who reads & writes music. He has six original songs in the copyright process right now. Steffan actually plays six instruments -- guitar, piano, cello, french horn, ukulele & percussion.

His mom also acknowledged that some of our edgier readers are bound to consider KidzBop "kind of mainstream fluff that sometimes gets a bad wrap." However, she wisely states that those who would bash it are never the people who it's created for. The idea is to take the mainstream music that parents & older teen siblings are listening to, and make a (non-swearing/non-negative) version of those songs that are more appropriate for younger kids. She told us Steffan is really having a blast with it. But, he has more of a personal edge for music. His all time favorite band/singer is Christofer Drew - NeverShoutNever.   You can check him out in action right here.

Shows On Our Radar-Empty Bottle Monday & Tuesday

Shows On Our Radar-Empty Bottle Monday & Tuesday

Hit The Empty Bottle this Monday &/or Tuesday.
Monday
Free Show
We haven't seen The Mutt's live but we've been loving their tunes on line!   Check out their main site here and give them a listen.   Some of the best things in life are free........and you can use all that cash you saved for beer and generous tips.

MON. 1/23/12 (9:00pm, Free)
Wally Dogger
Pinto & The Bean
Mutts
Otter Petter

Here's our prior coverage of Wally Dogger's CD release party last year at Beat Kitchen.   In that signature synchronicity way things have of cropping up, they played out with The Noses, renowned LA play write, Brett Neveu's band.  That week we had just reviewed opening night of Bretts amazing show, Odradeck, at The House Theatre.   And we were just about to check out another of Brett's works, The Earl, at A Red Orchid Theatre.   A year has past and guess what we just saw at A Red Orchid Theatre Friday?!   You guessed it, another Brett Neveu play, Megacosm.

Pinto & The Bean were part of our Ginormous Holiday Gift Guide & Give Aways.   One of our lucky readers won their CD along with 5 more.   We still have a couple more to give away so check back in like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.

6 CDs:    Soul-R&B-Blues-Rock including,  Fitz and The Tantrums,  How Far To Austin,  The Shams Band, Zach Heckendorf, Pinto & The Bean & The Future Laureates (over $70)

*We have loads of live videos, pit photos, band video interviews and CD reviews.   Check out the archives at the bottom of the page or use the search bar to the right.   We post upcoming shows, introduce new music, and give you breaking music news for alt-rock-metal-punk-funk-blues/bluegrass-and more, including bands for adults & kids.   All are posted at ChiIL Mama.com and archived at our sister site, ChiIL Live Shows.com.
In fact, you can check out two more of these bands at weekend 2 of The Chicago Blue Grass & Blues Festival this Saturday at The Congress Theater.    In fact, we just saw Donnie Biggins of The Shams Band back stage at CBB Fest at The Auditorium Theatre last night!   We'll have some sweet photos up very soon.

Tuesday

This one'll cost ya, but only $15, and they're world renowned musicians and well worth it.  We're hoping to set up a video interview soon with Jeff Parker and his partner who have a baby boy.   She's a filmmaker and college professor out in California.   Jeff also has an older, elementary age daughter we've known since Sagezilla was in a playgroup with her at age 2!

The son of the drummer for Tortoise was also in playgroup with our girls, along with a virtual whose who of chicago theatre and music peeps progeny.   We'd love to interview Jeff and Johnny Herndon and their partners, for our ongoing series on how creatives parent and how parents create.   Check out our Pinterest Board of that name, How Do Creatives Parent and How Do Parents Create, to find most of the interviews together.   We have the rest of the interviews in our Vimeo links in the sidebar at ChiIL Mama.   Pinterest doesn't see Vimeo for some odd reason.   The interviews include Brett Neveu and various Noses, mentioned above, as well as touring musicians from metal band Red Fang, Fitz & The Tantrums, Keller Williams, Danbert Nobacon (Chumbawamba), various CEOs, and a number of theatre personalities.

TUE. 1/24/12 (9:30pm, $15 buy)

Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) & Winters in Osaka at Empty Bottle-Show Photos/Metal

January 4th-Empty Bottle

We were in for a rare treat on the 4th.   It was an intimate evening at Empty Bottle, featuring solo works by metal power house players and a sweet duet, prefaced by Scott saying "Over at Neurosis, we all hate saxophone players....except this guy.  But no more squeaking."

My favorite quote of the night was also by Scott, who sat with a guitar and played haunting, stripped down versions of his new stuff.   Toward the end of his set he dedicated a song to family and qualified it by saying, "This song is dedicated to whatever family is to you.   It can be your own family or a family you create.   Family is the people who are there for you."   Wise words.

From Empty Bottle's Site:
Scott Kelly label: Neurot related: Neurosis

Hardcore / metal legends NEUROSIS are currently in Chicago working on new recordings for release this year and we are honored to welcome SCOTT KELLY to the Empty Bottle, taking a break from recording to perform a solo set here tonight. KELLY has influenced a whole generation of musicians wanting to take heavy music into new realms and with his various projects - BLOOD AND TIME, TRIBES OF NEUROT, doom metal super group SHRINEBUILDER and as a guest vocalist on MASTODONS last four studio LPs. We can’t wait to hear what happens when he takes the stage solo. Our own BRUCE LAMONT’S last LP, Feral Songs for the Epic Decline, out last year via At a Loss was highlighted in SPIN’s20 Best Metal Albums of 2011.” In their words, “thanks to LAMONT’S unholy army of loop pedals, Feral Songs.

Led Zeppelin 2 Rocks House of Blues This Friday and Saturday (17+)

Double click the slide show to alter speed/play full screen/other options

Considering it was just Jimmy Page's birthday, yesterday, it's the perfect time to let you in on the fun shows going down this weekend at House of Blues.   We shot these guys at Do Division back in the summer and didn't even realize who was Mr. Robert Plant, incognito!   Any guesses?

These talented and prolific musicians, in their own right, not only dress the part for Zeppelin 2, but take on the mannerisms and persona of the band as well.   This lethal combo of sincere tribute, excellent musicianship and campy parody, makes for a killer show.   Zep 2 is serious musicians, playing seriously legendary tunes, who don't take themselves too seriously.   Come down and check 'em out.

We plan to shoot their show Sat. and should have more, fun, live show shots shortly on ChiIL Live Shows and ChiILMama.com.

LED ZEPPELIN 2 ... THE LIVE EXPERIENCE brings you the excitement
of Led Zeppelin "In Concert" by re-enacting the live improvisation & onstage interaction that earned Led Zeppelin their legendary status for performing. LZ2 has played major venues across the US in 2010 and 2011 and drawn rave reviews for a "spot-on" Zeppelin show, playing deep cuts and classic tracks from the entire catalog, and occasionally entire Zeppelin shows from specific dates.

BRUCE LAMONT

The Chicago Southsider is no stranger to the city's rock scene. Bruce has been the frontman for the critically acclaimed avant-metal group Yakuza for the past decade, touring all over the world. In addition to Led Zeppelin 2, Yakuza, and his solo works, Lamont performs with other projects including Circle of Animals, and Bloodiest, and previously with Dyslexic Apaches. Lamont's solo album "Feral Songs for The Epic Decline" was recently selected Top 20 Metal Recordings by SPIN

IAN LEE
Canadian-born Drummer Ian Lee's dad was a well-known folk musician (the satirical and occasionally controversial Brothers-In-Law) Starting drums at age 8, Ian moved to US to join Bad Oskar, opening for Ted Nugent and national acts. In Chicago, Ian drummed for Woolworthy, Not Rebecca, and with members of Cheap Trick, Veruca Salt, Ministry, and Urge Overkill. Currently from Arizona, Lee runs the www.thebestdrummerintheworld.com website, and was recently featured in Asylum magazine "How to Be John Bonham -- A Drummer's Guide".

MATTHEW LONGBONS
After winning Downbeat awards on jazz trumpet in high school, Matthew picked up bass. In 2001 Matthew joined Chicago-based Ghettobillies, playing upwards of 200 gigs a year, including shows with Alice Cooper and The Allman Brothers, and numerous European tours. Matthew was voted best un-signed bassist in America at the 2004 National Emergenza battle of the bands. and has played with Pete Special (The Band), Umphree’s McGee, Nyco (Ted Atkatz of CSO), Underwater People, Matt Walker (Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Morrisey). Matthew handles bass, keys, and mandolin in Led Zep 2.

PAUL KAMP

By age 12 Paul was playing lead guitar in bands on Chicago's southwest side. Kamp is recognized for his work with Busker Soundcheck, a Chicago trio known for inventive, interactive rock songs, including bowed-guitar and a range of electric and acoustic styles, a staple of the 1990's Chicago music scene. Busker Soundcheck was a touring machine, with studio recordings hailed on several prominent critics' "Best Of" lists. Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune, called Kamp "one of the most accomplished guitar players in the Midwest" and he earned a nomination as "best guitarist" in the Illinois Entertainer magazine.

Recommended Empty Bottle Shows This Week-Wed (Tonight), Thurs, Sat

1035 N. Western
We'll be hittin' the bottle This week...The Empty Bottle that is.   Tonight, one of our favorite local musicians, Bruce Lamont, is up with other notable hard core/ metal legend, Scott Kelly!   Tomorrow we'll try to swing by early to catch Playfully Yours from Cincinnati.   We had a chance meeting, outta town last week, with band member Maxx, and look forward to checkin' out their live set.   *Show is still FREE WITH RSVP through TODAY.

We just shot Bruce Lamont's solo stuff and amazing Yakuza set at Reggie's Rock Club, and will have those live photos up today at both ChiIL Mama & ChiIL Live Shows (along with another recent Empty bottle show by The Buddies.)

Our own BRUCE LAMONT’S last LP, Feral Songs for the Epic Decline, out last year via At a Loss was highlighted in SPIN’s “20 Best Metal Albums of 2011.” In their words, “thanks to LAMONT’S unholy army of loop pedals, Feral Songs is a dissonant, ritualistic swirl of Middle Eastern scales, mystery slams, ghostly moans, snaking reedwork and acoustic guitars…equal parts bustling and bleak,” and we’re always pleased when he takes the stage here. WINTERS IN OSAKA return to the Bottle, having gone past their punk influenced noise roots, the outfit is now creating quieter, spookier ambient/drone music and has added members of HARPOON and BONGRIPPER to the fold. Playfully Yours musician, Maxx, sited Thrill Kill Cult as one of their influences, when we had a chance meeting in Cincy last week.   Then, weirdly enough, New Years Eve & Day, Thrill Kill Cult came up 3 more times in other unrelated conversations.

*Note to Maxx--never underestimate the power of a crappy day job for networking.   Talk about your passion often and doors will open.   BTW, to add to our prior conversation, Chicago has some seriously sweet thrift stores to expand your rock wardrobe without blowing the beer $$.   Our favorite is the Unique Thrift Store Chain & the best of those two are at Diversey and Kilbourn or Addison & Kimball.   If transportation is an issue...there are two worth a look close to Empty Bottle.   Check out Village Thrift on Milwaukee Ave., just north of Armitage and a few doors north of there, Family Thrift.

Finally...we'll be hittin' the bottle again Saturday.   Check out our prior feature here for all the details.

11 YEAR-OLD ROCKERS HAUNTED BY HEROES ON NBC'S “THE TODAY SHOW”

HAUNTED BY HEROES rocked NBC’s “Today Show” January 3, 2012. The segment, filmed in Los Angeles and San Francisco, features the band of middle-schoolers as they play The Sunset Strip Music Festival and other West Coast venues. Haunted by Heroes , whose members all recently turned 11 years- old, have been the subject of national news stories as the world's youngest rock band, and recently released their debut single "Rock Me Roxy," recorded with famed producer Sylvia Massy (Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, Danzig, Prince, Seal, and many others). Their debut album is set for an early 2012 release. "Rock Me Roxy" was also featured in the "Rock Band 3" game.

Here at ChiIL Mama, we know kids rock, and are happy to help spread the word about young talent.  In fact, congrats are in order for Chicago local kids band, Northbrook Garage, who won their studio time to record at Ardent Studios!   We helped spread the word in early December, so thank you to all of our readers who voted.   In another update, from the same Dec. 6th kid band news round up, our rockin' underage friends in Chicago band, When Flying Feels Like Falling (winners of The Next Big Thing contest at The Metro)
are playing another Chi Town gig this Friday.   The show's an all ages benefit for Chicago Zine Fest and here's the FB event page.

Back to Haunted by Heros:
You may have caught Haunted by Heroes on their Cartoon Network video of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way " (performed with 8 year-old rapper Lil P-Nut, similar to Aerosmith’s collaboration with Run-DMC), which aired nationally in early September, 2011.

Haunted by Heroes is also slated to appear Thursday, January 19 at the Anaheim Convention Center for The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). The band ends the NAMM Show weekend at the Sunset Strip's Whisky a Go Go on Saturday, January 21.
