SONS OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS FATHER

Announce new album
Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla
Out June 1st, 2018

"When Things Fall Apart"

New York City's Sons Of An Illustrious Father - comprised of Josh Aubin, Lilah Larson, and Ezra Miller - are proud to announce their brand new album, Deus Sex Machina:  Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla, which will be released on June 1st, 2018.  Following a brilliant video for the song "Extraordinary Rendition," which came out earlier this spring, the band today share another taste of the album with the song "When Things Fall Apart," which premiered today via Clash.  Click HERE to listen to it.

Sons Of An Illustrious Father were born from an inherent need to represent Otherness within personal identity, continuing the astounding lineage of punk rock icons before them who pushed the boundaries of popular culture via explorations of gender definition and sexual fluidity.  Theirs is a sound that leans back towards the outsiderdom and recklessness in music that paved the way for the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, X-Ray Spex, Bikini Kill, and so many more.

It is from this path that Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla has sprung -- a daring record stuffed to the brim with socio-political ideas and sprawling gender theory which also just happens to be their most epic, most infectious to date.  The album is a distinctively literate statement of intent, an act of resistance from the outsiders and the fighters, aimed at the cerebral cortex even as it inexorably moves your hips. It's a specific direction they have charted ever since they first emerged a few years ago, before finally coalescing into a glorious, head spinning whole on this triumphal record.

Casting a critical eye over a society rotting from the inside out - in their own words, "it's a funeral march for our world we have lost" - the music is anything but bleak and morose. Instead, it sounds enormous, weaving in sepulchral folk, punk, electronica, rock, and much more to dizzying effect. They define their undefinable sound as "genre queer," which sounds idiosyncratic to say the least, but self-analysis is not a preoccupation of this band.  And why should it be? Their obsession with the wholly immersive and visceral experience of music makes them wilfully flippant where particulars and details are concerned, and this record makes good use of their heart-and-gut-wrenching reactions to the dismal current state of affairs.  Indeed, Sons of An Illustrious Father have a miraculous way of turning the atmospheric anger, confusion, and turmoil into chest-bursting anthems meant to bring people together during disparate times.

Over the 9-song span of Deus Sex Machina:  Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla, Sons Of An Illustrious Father's particular vision is celebrated fully and without cliché. Like all the seminal oddballs and aliens that came before them, they are looking at the chaos and disorder in the world right now with resourceful, refined eyes, and they see the glorious opportunity and enormous responsibility that affords. These songs are the end result; listen on and marvel.

Sons Of An Illustrious Father will be touring America this spring; tour dates are below.

LINK WRAY’S “RUMBLE” INDUCTED INTO FIRST CLASS OF ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME’S SINGLES & NEVER BEFORE HEARD TRACK OUT NOW

New Releases On Our Radar:

“SON OF RUMBLE,” A NEVER BEFORE HEARD TRACK FROM THE LINK WRAY ARCHIVES,  OUT NOW ON 7” VINYL VIA EASY EYE SOUND

The story of Link Wray sounds like something straight out of a Hollywood movie. In 1937, a boy from the Shawnee Indian tribe was taught guitar by an African American traveling carny named Hambone in the segregated south.

“He’s the king.  If it hadn’t been for Link Wray and Rumble, I’d have never picked up a guitar.” - Pete Townshend

“Rumble had the power to help me say ‘fuck it,’ I’m going to be a musician.” – Iggy Pop

“Link Wray was a huge influence on all modern rock guitar players.  If they say he didn’t influence (them), they’re lying!” - Wayne Kramer, MC5

60 years ago, legendary guitarist Link Wray released his influential instrumental song “Rumble,” and changed the face and sound of rock and roll forever. The song has now been inducted into the very first class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Singles. This marks the first time The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has honored songs in addition to artists, and Link Wray’s “Rumble” was immortalized alongside five other singles. “Very happy to see Link Wray’s “Rumble” get its much deserved recognition by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” said Dan Auerbach about “Rumble’s” induction. “It’s a song that changed everything and influenced all that came after it. It's now time for that impact to be fully recognized and for Link to be inducted to the Rock Hall as an artist, where he always belonged.” Read the full details about the song’s induction via Billboard.

Dan Auerbach’s label, Easy Eye Sound has released “Son of Rumble,” Link’s intended, but never released follow-up to the song that introduced the world to power chords and intentional distortion. “Son of Rumble” is a never before released or heard track from the Link Wray archives, and the song, along with b-side “Whole Lotta Talking,” is now available as 7” vinyl here.

Link Wray’s “Rumble” became a flash point for countless musicians including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Pete Townshend, Iggy Pop, Steven Van Zandt, Jeff Beck and Elvis Costello. The song was banned in New York, Boston, and Detroit, for fear it would incite juvenile violence, making Wray the only artist in history to have a banned instrumental.

In 1953, that boy became a Western Swing musician who played the wake of Hank Williams.  By 1957, he was a Korean War Veteran who lost a lung to TB and was told he’d never sing again. Yet, Link Wray spent the next half-century as the only one-lung singer in rock and roll, and lay the foundations for what the genre would become. The impact of Link Wray, one of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time, can be heard in generations of American and British metal, punk, grunge, thrash, and psychobilly rockers, all of whom have claimed him and “Rumble” (and follow-ups “Raw-Hide” and “Jack The Ripper”) as their own.

Exclusive trailer courtesy of BILLBOARD.com

Jane's Addiction has long been a favorite of ours here at ChiILLiveShows.com and I've had the pleasure of shooting them live a handful of times, in addition to covering Lollapalooza for decades. So, we're thrilled to see this new release coming in August to celebrate 25 years of Jane's unique sound and showmanship.

Rock Fuel Media, in association with Sonic Films, Cleopatra Records, and MVD Entertainment Group, is excited to announce the August 4th release of the state-of-the-art DVD, Blu-ray, audio CD and vinyl collection by legendary, multi-Platinum rockers Jane's Addiction, called Ritual De Lo Habitual Alive At 25

Directed by Mark Ritchie (Madonna, Kanye West) and produced by Barry Summers (Rock Fuel Media), Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual Alive At 25 features a complete concert filmed at the historic Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre on September 23rd 2016, which was the last stop on the band's 20-city worldwide "Sterling Spoon Anniversary Tour." The powerhouse line-up of Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney performed an explosive 90-minute show consisting of their entire landmark album Ritual De Lo Habitual, as well as some of the band's biggest hits spanning their 30-year career. It was all captured with 20 cameras throughout the venue and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound.

As Perry Farrell explains, "25 years - what a beautiful milestone for both Ritual De Lo Habitual and Lollapalooza. As both were great achievements in our lives that also helped change the course of music history, we really sought to come up with a special show for this tour so that the fans could celebrate it with us."

Award-winning producer Barry Summers from Rock Fuel Media explains, "The band's great visual and very edgy performances always kick ass on stage. Ritual De Lo Habitual  is such an iconic album that changed the landscape of alternative rock and we wanted to capture the 25 year anniversary in stunning 4k. It's quite mind-blowing and we think fans will enjoy this package for years to come."

INCOMING: Nick Waterhouse at Bottom Lounge With Upcoming Release Never Twice Out 9/30/16

ChiIL Live Shows On Our Radar:

NICK WATERHOUSE AND LEON BRIDGES DUET ON "KATCHI" - OFF WATERHOUSE'S FORTHCOMING
 NEVER TWICE
OUT SEPTEMBER 30TH ON INNOVATIVE LEISURE
CHECK OUT THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR "OLD PLACE"!

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, we've been eagerly anticipating the new release by Nick Waterhouse. He truly shines live, and will be back out on tour this fall in support of Never Twice. We plan to catch him here in Chi, IL on 10/4 at Bottom Lounge. Full tour dates are below. Whether you're a long time fan or newly discovering the stellar style of Nick Waterhouse, give this a listen. Then come out and catch him live.

LISTEN TO "KATCHI" HERE

On September 30th, Nick Waterhouse will return with his third full-length studio album, Never Twice. Waterhouse recently unveiled the track "Katchi" off of the upcoming album. The track features his pal Leon Bridges and riffs on Bridges' family name for a massage - "Katchi." "Leon and I were in Fort Worth hanging out at a friend's place getting massages. He was laying on the table while I strummed the chords, bare chested, he shouted out "she give me KATCHI!"... His mother's old Louisiana Indian term for 'loving touch'. We rode it out and next thing we know we had a straight cruiser," Waterhouse told The Fader.

Waterhouse also recently unveiled his sweaty grooving video for "Old Place," made up of clips of him performing live earlier this year on Flood. The clips were directed by Emma Pollard.

Watch the video here:

Never Twice will be released via Innovative Leisure digitally, on CD and 180 gram vinyl. He will head out on a fall U.S. Tour starting on September 24th. Highlights include Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on October 8th, The Bottom Lounge in Chicago on October 4th and The Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington DC on October 12th. More tour dates to be announced.

With Never Twice, Nick Waterhouse returned to his original collaborator, producer Michael McHugh (Black Lips, Ty Segall, Allah-Las). McHugh was a local legend in the oft-underrated Orange County music scene that Nick grew up in. McHugh was the first person to ever put Nick on tape and in an effort to re-capture the vibrancy of the Huntington Beach scene of Nick's youth, he invited McHugh up to his current home of San Francisco to work the boards once again. Once he had McHugh on board, Nick began cold-calling his favorite players, all of whom miraculously said yes. Jazz musician Bob Kenmotsu's contributed flute, Tom Waits and Elvis Costello collaborator Ralph Carney on sax, Dr. Lonnie Smith protege Will Blades on Organ and a virtual whose who of muso legends on horns, bass and guitar. The result is an exuberant and impeccably recorded album of songs, showcasing Waterhouse's prowess as a musician and a band-leader.

PRAISE FOR NICK WATERHOUSE

"The verses are built on the feet-shuffling groove of jazzy drums and keys as Waterhouse bewails his life's stagnation ... He refuses to sit still for long, however, as the funky refrain kicks everything into fifth gear with driving guitar riffs that bring to mind classic rhythm and blues bandstands, all decked in golds and blacks and blues."
- Consequence of Sound

"Swoony vocals that recall
jazz singers like Cab Calloway and Jack Jones, Waterhouse has been hailed as the second coming of soul, infusing a distinctly California surf-rock spin to the genre.'
- VOGUE

"Waterhouse's show of intensity arrived through an incendiary combo of momentum-building saxophones...riding a grand, Spector-esque wave, punctuated with start-and-stop pacing, a love of musical space and Waterhouse's utilitarian voice singing structured three-minute rockers."
- Los Angeles Times

"Waterhouse straddles the line between rock grit and smooth, sultry R&B. It's sexy, it's smart, and it's definitely worth another round in a bar in the middle of a dark and stormy night."
- Esquire

More About Nick Waterhouse
By Jonathan Toubin

Many moons ago Primo Pitino, the DJ of San Francisco's legendary Oldies Night, passed me a copy of his friend Nick Waterhouse's "Some Place." Nick was a local vinyl DJ and the kid working at our Shangri-la, Rooky Ricardo's Records. Though he didn't have a band at the time, Waterhouse assembled some local musicians to cut a one-off 45 in the vein of the electrifying mid-century modern rhythm and blues he loved. I threw "Some Place"on the Technics during sound check a few cities down the line and was blown away from the howling falsetto all the way to the end! I gave it a whirl every night from Texas to Tennessee and all the way back home to New York. Not only were the dancers' feet responding, but they were also asking about the track on a nightly basis. The Nashville Scene was so blown away that they printed a piece on Nick after that single listen. DJs and collectors everywhere wanted it so bad that the little record with the big sound started fetching upwards of $300 on Ebay.

The immediate and unprecedented underground dance party success of Nick's DIY record resulted in a full band, gigs, and, after a number of obstacles, the widely acclaimed 2012 LP Time's All Gone. Nick's music, vision, and fully formed aesthetic caught on globally and he was instantly a fixture at nearly every major nightclub and festival on both sides of the Atlantic, Australia, Japan, and Russia - hitting stages everywhere from Primavera to Montreux Jazz Festival and charting on college, public, and commercial radio.

Only a year after self-releasing his first single, Nick Waterhouse was thrust into the chaos of leading a band, touring, and recording in the big leagues! Pummeling high speed down a bumpy hill of lineup changes, economic problems, and general chaos without any breaks, Nick made it through and the challenges made him more focused. 2014's Holly captured a more experienced artist upping the ante in writing, performance, recording, and production, inspiring a new level of critical and commercial success.

In addition to a jam-packed five years on the road, in the studio, and in the practice space, Waterhouse also produced septuagenarian soul legend Ural Thomas, Los Angeles Latin stars the Boogaloo Assassins, and garage rockers the Allah-las. He's currently collaborating with the likes of young Grammy-nominee Leon Bridges and Steven Colbert bandleader Jon Batiste. The Rolling Stones blast Nick's version of "I Can Only Give You Everything"at stadiums before they go onstage. Vogue hired him to pose with Kendall Jenner. He hipped her to Little Willie John while Anna Wintour complimented his shoes. While a lesser artist would get lost in these distractions, Nick Waterhouse's acclaim only seems to energize him and make him work harder and push his music to the next level.

Nick's latest Never Twice is a culmination, intensification, and realization of everything he's been developing throughout this prolific frenzy. Catchier and loaded with more hits than its predecessors, Nick's new LP is at the same time harder hitting, more rhythmic, more harmonic, more diverse, and more adventurous than any of the excellent work that already separated him from the pack. A cool and elegant post-post-modern cocktail of 1950s r&b and club jazz, mixed with 1960s soul and boogaloo, and shaken with a minimal contemporary sensibility, Never Twice finds the artist taking his time, refining his vision, and speaking with new authority. In five short years Nick Waterhouse has come a long way and it looks like he may have just painted his masterpiece.

GRINDMOTHER is a 67 year-old grindcore vocalist!  She got her start in early 2015, when an adorable, yet hilariously bad-ass video where she records guest vocals for her son's band, Corrupt Leaders, went viral. Later that year, Grindmother released a video for her very own solo track "Any Cost", which features music by her son Rain Forest.  The video again went viral, and celebrities Ozzy Osbourne and Eric Andre posted the video on social media.  Most recently, a video about her posted by New York Post reached 2.5 million views in less than one week.

In Feb 2016 Grindmother announced her debut album, "Age of Destruction", which is due April 28, and a brand new video for the album's title track has been released.

Wolfmother recently teamed with popular enhanced colouring book app Recolor to give fans the opportunity to create their own colorized version of the VICTORIOUS album art. Fan submissions can be viewed HERE.  Recolor was created by premium photo app developer Sumoing.

The follow-up to 2009's Cosmic Egg and 2014's New Crown, the much-anticipated VICTORIOUS is an electrifying testament to the range and depth of songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Andrew Stockdale's artistry. Recorded at Henson Studios in Los Angeles with 2X Grammy winning producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Chris Cornell, Bruce Springsteen), the songs are edgy, inventive and uncompromising and rank among the band's best ever.

Stockdale began working on the record this past January at his Byron Bay studio in New South Wales, writing on every instrument and embracing the same creative approach he used on the band's debut album a decade ago.
"Back in the early days, I'd play guitar, bass, and drums and then present the ideas to the band and we'd work on the arrangement together," he says. "I thought it would be cool to get back to demoing ideas by myself and playing everything. It's a good way to do things because it can make the style more cohesive."

In addition to vocals, Stockdale played guitar and bass and brought in Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springsteen, A Perfect Circle) and Joey Waronker (Air, Beck, REM) to split drum duties. "We wanted to get back to that big sound," says Stockdale. "The album is a balance of garage-y energy and big production. It's wild, energetic and," he muses, "perfect for a festival main stage."

Wolfmother first made its mark in 2005 with an eponymous debut that was exactly what rock & roll needed: a meaty, beaty, big and bouncy genre resuscitator that not only broke through to the mainstream, but broke big. The album was certified Gold in the States, UK & Canada and 5x-Platinum in the band's Australian homeland. Lead single "Woman" hit top ten on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks Chart and won a Grammy for "Best Hard Rock Performance." Their songs became ubiquitous, appearing in films (Shrek, Jackass, Due Date,The Hangover I, II & III), video games (Need For Speed, MLB: The Show, Saints Row) and television commercials (Apple, Mitsubishi).Rolling Stone named it one of the best albums of the year, Q Magazine called it "immense fun," NME said it ticked "the requisite boxes for all great rock & roll" and called it "utterly, utterly thrilling" and Pitchfork praised the songs for striking "a balance between meaty vintage metal and crisp, stoner-rock melodies."

Led by Stockdale, Wolfmother have amassed a global fanbase, played to packed-house crowds around the world, delivered show-stealing sets at star-studded festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Isle of Wight, Rock am Ring and Reading and Leeds, and have been invited to share stages with rock icons Aerosmith and AC/DC. For their induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame, Led Zeppelin personally invited Wolfmother as their guests (the band showed their appreciation by delivering an electrifying cover of "Communication Breakdown").

Ten years after their arrival, Wolfmother have returned with what could arguably be called their best work to date. With VICTORIOUS, Stockdale once again arrives right on time: in an era dominated by single-song downloads, this is an album worthy of repeat listens from top to bottom.

INCOMING: Chicago's Razorhouse EP Release at Schuba's Tavern (21+) 4/29/15

Chi, IL Live Shows On Our Radar

Chicago’s Razorhouse will be celebrating the April 7 release of the *Codex Du EP with a show at Schuba’s Tavern on Wednesday, April 29: $8, 8pm, 21+. Check out their site here for more details.

Chicago’s Razorhouse follows up 2013's Codex Jun with Codex Du, scheduled for release on Tuesday, April 7.

Codex Du collects the previously released singles "Neu Sensation" and "Girl Like a Hand Grenade" alongside the tracks "Distance Wheel," "Regan’s Song," "If You Find Heaven" and "St. Teresa."

Razorhouse takes its name from the Mayan spiritual teachings in the Popul Vuh and the term "Codex" refers to a section of the Mayan writings. The band combines elements of industrial rock and hard glam with the distinctive voice and songwriting of group leader Mark J. Panick (The Bonemen of Barumba, Chac Mool, Revolting Cocks), whose work is encoded with beautiful daydreams and dirty ideas.

While earlier incarnations of Razorhouse included members of RevCo, KMFDM, and Sister Machine Gun, Panick has more recently opted for a rotating lineup with players recruited specifically for recordings, shows and tours. Codex Du features production by Danny McGuinness and Howie Beno, vocals by Mark Panick, guitars by Panick, Danny Shaffer, John McCurry and Tommi Zender, bass by Beno and John Abbey and drums by David Suycott. Bob Ludwig, well known for his work with Led Zeppelin, The Police and Nirvana, mastered the EP.
