The Melismatics formed at the turn of the century in the fertile ground of the Minneapolis indie-rock scene. Their debut album “Postmodern Rock” quickly caught the attention of college radio stations around the country and garnered favorable reviews from critics around the world. Shortly thereafter, Minneapolis indie-rock king pin Ed Ackerson (Motion City Sountrack, The Replacements, The Jayhawks) signed the band to Susstones Records and produced their next two albums “New Infection” and “Turn It On”.

The Melismatics toured the country numerous times over and continued to win loyal fans with their high-energy and unpredictable live shows. Their music has been featured on MTV’s “The Hills,” “The City”and “Laguna Beach,” NBC’s “Windfall”; Animal Planet’s “Jockeys” and they’ve played such notable events as Lollapalooza, Summerfest, and CMJ.

The Melismatics released “The Acid Test” on CC Entertainment/E1 Music (2008). Renowned producer John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Rooney, Har Mar Superstar, etc) caught the band performing at 2007 SXSW in Austin, Texas and signed on to produce the album. The music video for “Digging Deep” charted at #4 on MTVU and received widespread airplay.

The Melismatics’ upcoming album “MANIA!” was produced by Jon Auer of The Posies and Big Star, along with Ed Ackerson (Motion City Soundtrack, Golden Smog, The Replacements) and was mixed by John Fields. The LP was mastered at Sterling Sound in NYC by Chris Athens (Coldplay, Beastie Boys, NERD, etc) and features collaborations with Dan Wilson (Adele, Semisonic) and Jon Auer who also lends vocals to several tracks.

The Melismatics have found a sound all their own that is familiar yet unique, euphoric and adventurous. The Melismatics’ sound is constantly evolving and developing– as The Onion put it, “no one ever accused The Melismatics of being predictable.”

Quotes

"YT//ST creates full-scale events, complete with eerie face-paint, monochromatic paper sets and Boredoms-style drum blasts that blend black metal and kabuki into a jaw-dropping new form. The group’s debut album is equally epic, yet it’s all just a glimpse into their master plan to freak out the squares with a stage production so large no theatre in the world could contain it." - Noisey

"the record feels wholly substantial and satisfying in its own right, and even those with no prior knowledge of YT//ST's history and elaborate intentions can just enjoy it for what it is: volcanic prog-rock colored with equal parts post-punk urgency, stoner-metal heft, and psychedelic pop whimsy." - Pitchfork

3. Oak Of Guernica
4. Reverse Crystal // Murder of a Spider

MAGICKS
Website
The beauty of Magicks sound is that it is as accessible as it is indecipherable. Although the Chicago native cites hip hop, rhythm and blues and shoegaze as initial influences, the end product is much more. Magicks is a high minister in the "Church of What's Happening Now", managing to blend a virtual primer of today's most influential sounds into one cohesive package that actually sounds good (to even the most jaded critic). This is dreamy pop music crafted by a psychick warrior. Equal parts pleasure and challenge to the modern ear.

The Sweeps could never disappoint. Their songs are catchy, their stage presence is amazing, and the energy from their fans is intoxicating!

Call it what you will, this is folk music that refuses to sit down.

KOFFIN KATS
KOFFIN KATSWebsite
With over eight years of touring internationally and 1000+ shows, the Detroit based Koffin Kats new home is on the road. This trio kicked it off in June of 2003 with the mission to not stop for anything. Vic Victor (Lead Vocal, Upright Bass) would join forces with long time friend Tommy Koffin (Guitar) and start laying the ground work for the sonic assault known as The Koffin Kats. They put together songs with subjects ranging from Sci-Fi to dealing with the horrors of the real world. With Eric “E Ball” Walls (Drums) they began in small local bars playing for beer and eventually made their way out of the Mid West. The next couple of years proved to be up with numerous North American tours and down with drummer changes. During this time they released their first three albums - S/T (2003), Inhumane (2005), and Straying from the Pack (2006). These releases and the tours caught some attention and helped get the name of ”The Koffin Kats” noticed in the wide world of punk & psychobilly. In 2007 Vic and Tommy hooked back up with Eric to get ready for the fourth album, Drunk in the Daylight (2008), and began what the Kats are now known for… NON STOP TOURING & TRYING TO MAKE EVERY SHOW A PARTY. With their love for their fans and for the road they set out to play everywhere willing to listen to them. In the recent years they have been able to make a name for themselves in Europe as well and have been included on tours with some of the tops acts in psychobilly such as Mad Sin, Nekromantix, & The Meteors. In 2009 they released “Forever For Hire” and at the years end Tommy left the band to pursue a normal life. Shortly thereafter EZ Ian Jarrell took over the guitar and hopped on tour. While on the road they worked on material that would become featured on a split album with The 12 Step Rebels in released in Spring of 2011. Now The Koffin Kats are currently on a North American Tour and have signed with Sailors Grave Records to release the next full length "Our Way & The Highway" in January 2012.

THREE BLUE TEARDROPS
Website
Three Blue Teardrops formed in the fall of 1991. A three piece trio of drums, upright bass and guitar, the band began writing and performing original songs that combined elements of 1970’s punk , gut bucket blues, jungle swing, gospel, garage rock, hillbilly jazz and country harmony to the 1950’s style raw rockabilly sounds of our Rock-N-Roll forefathers to create their own contemporary sound that was not stuck in the trappings of rockabilly, psychobilly, punk, blues or any single musical sub genre.
GAMBLERS MARK
Website
It all started in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley, where a young David discovered great Blues music at the local pub in the city of Arcadia. It wasnt long before False Idols was formed, they became an eclectic trio whose music style was difficult to coin. After invading the local music scene for nearly three years, the trio dedcided to go their separate ways. Meanwhile, the skills of a young musician were forming, as Dan-e took on the task of learning to play the drums. Inevitably, Dave and Dan-e decided to join forces and establish Gamblers Mark. They had a great run the first time around, but were faced with obstacles to overcome. In reinventing themselves and reinforcing the GM unit, they decided to let Dan-e take over the upright bass and call on Ricky Lobo to take over the drums and back-up vocals. With over nine years drumming experience Ricky proved to be a good choice for the missing link. Gamblers Mark fronted by guitarist and lead vocalist David Arechiga, with Dan-e Arechiga on bass and back-up vocals, and Ricky Lobo on drums and back-up vocals remains a trio whose style isnt easily coined. They bring together many sounds including Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Surf, Ska, Corridos para mover las nalgas, and reved up 50s rock n roll.
NOTHING TO GAIN
Website
From the fires of hell they rise with powerful guitar riffs, pounding bass lines, and intense drummming to make a permanent scar on the Chicago music scene. With influences such as The Koffin Kats, Mad Sin, Eddie Cochran, and Johnny Cash they're not here to tell you how to dress, who to be, or what to believe in. They sing of your nightmares and quiet possibly some of your dreams. Lifes to short to worry about money, politics, and religion so fuck all of that and lets have a good time!!

O'MY'S
The O' My's, a group which was haphazardly conceived in the summer of 2007, have since become one of the most adored young bands from Chicago. The O'My's make music that garners comparisons to the soul and blues of Chicago's past, yet the essence of the music is beyond pretension and their sound is far from contrived.

Guitarist Maceo Vidal-Haymes and Pianist Nick Hennessey (who share songwriting and vocal duties) are the beating heart of The O'My's. The band can consist of anywhere from 4-10 members with Haymes and Hennessy being the only constant contributors.

Supersuckers LIVE at Reggie's Rock Club 11-7-11

Dbl click slide show for full screen and other options

I saw The Supersuckers a number of times back in BC--that would be before children--and their shows were always a rockin' good time.   Kiss might have been "The Hottest Band in the Land" but The Supersuckers are the unabashedly self declared "Greatest Rock-n-Roll Band in the World".   Welcome back boys.

Excerpt from frontman/bass player, Eddie, on The Supersuckers main page:
My son Quattro says the next thing they will invent for phones will be the ability to teleport yourself anywhere you want to be. Now THAT would rule! No more long drives for me - I'd be at home every night, sleeping in my own bed, waking up with my kids and having a day at home before heading off to "work" at night. Just think of the havoc that would reign down upon the travel industries! No more airlines! No more cars! Ah, I can't wait... That's gonna be fantastic.

Parents rock and rockers parent.   I know my own punk kin would love to see a teleportation phone invented, too!

Here's the story of The Supersucker's start:

Our story is almost impossible to believe. This band is literally a human cartoon. We all grew up among the dead-ends and cactus needles of Tucson, Arizona and have known each other since grade school. We graduated from the same high school together at the same time (a school immortalized in our song “Santa Rita High”) and we chose to play in a band together because we liked to hang out together, not because we were great musicians or anything. I truly believe that a band is defined by their limitations, that what they can’t (or won’t) do is just as important as what they can do. I guess that, in this era of pre-fabricated, put-together-to-have-a-hit bands, we’re kind of an aberration and I gotta tell ya that that makes us smile a little every day.

We formed the band in 1988 and we were initially a five piece called The Black Supersuckers ( a name found in some quality “adult literature” we had laying around in our impeccably clean band house!), with me on bass, Dan “Thunder” Bolton and Rontrose Heathman on guitars, Dancing Eagle on drums and a lead singer by the name of Eric Martin. After firmly proving ourselves to be the best band in town we decided it was time to get out of Tucson and try our luck somewhere else. So we tossed a coin with heads as New Orleans and tails as Seattle. Tails it was and in May of “89 we packed up and went north.

We had no idea that Seattle was about to become “Rock Mecca USA”, we just wanted to go somewhere where we could wear our leather jackets a little more often. It was exciting and encouraging to see all of the great bands there, doing their own thing and making some kick-ass, aggressive rock-n-roll that we could relate to, so we started recording immediately. After some classic “creative differences” with our lead singer, we decided to try it as a four piece with yours truly as the singer (I was the only one who knew all the words) and The Supersuckers, as you may or may not know them today, were born.

Nashville Pussy LIVE at Reggie's Rock Club 11-7-11

Double click slide show for full screen and other options

Despite a cold downpour and a Monday night slot, fans came out in droves to see Nashville Pussy and The Supersuckers do their thing, LIVE at Reggie's Rock Club this week.   These accomplished musicians all bring it, live.    And we love bands with a sense of humor.   Husband/ wife team, Blaine and Ruyter, have an undeniable chemistry on stage, despite copious flirting with the audience.

Karen Cuda at Bottom Lounge, Chicago

We missed their bass player, Karen Cuda, and wish her speedy recovery.    She's out with an arm injury.   The good news was, Supersucker's own frontman/ bass player, Eddie Spaghetti, jumped in to fill the void.   Yeah, OK, he's not as hot as Karen, but that boy can play.

Back when Nashville Pussy opened for The Dwarves at Bottom Lounge in August, ChiIL Mama snagged their latest release to review and one for our readers.   One lucky fan got the Dwarves DVD/CD and NP's new CD, From Hell to Texas.   We highly recommend it for catchy riffs, and amusing lyrics.    That said, this is not the CD you want little Logan and Madison belting out in preschool!    As you can see from the set list, their tunes are not for the kindie kin.   Save it for your teens or your alone time.    I crank it in the car after elementary school drop off.

We'll be reviewing and giving away a zillion new alt-punk-rock-folk-funk CDs for the way underagers leading up to the holidays (and X and New York Dolls DVDs for the rest of you).   But, From Hell to Texas is some good ol' raunchy, kid inappropriate fun.   From our experience, no one needs that more than people who spend their days with dependents who are...well, dependent...on you.   At the show I was front and center with a couple parents of an 8 year old, enjoying a night out.   We also ran into our friend Dan, who has been with Spin Magazine for years, and is a Chi-Town Dad of 3 young boys.   And I'm sure we were not the only ones.    We're big fans of "life doesn't end with birth".   Parents get to have a life, too.
Here's Nashville Pussy's bio from their site:

True rock n' roll doesn't require definition. It's self-explanatory based on a gut feeling and the unconditional devotion to the musical genre. Nashville Pussy have celebrated their brand of genuine rock n' roll for more than a decade, in classic style at times, surprising at others, but always earthy, raw and unadulterated.

Band mastermind Blaine Cartwright (vocals, guitar), his wife Ruyter Suys (guitar), Karen Cuda (bass) and Jeremy Thompson (drums) poured their heart and soul into the latest rock release, entitled From Hell To Texas, which saw the band hone their most impressive recording to date alongside the non stop touring, from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Japan, and almost a year straight with the Reverend Horton Heat, "We allowed ourselves this time to give the songs the chance to turn out as perfect as possible," Cartwright explains. "We kept playing the new tracks at our rehearsal room until they really clicked. I feel they're heavier and grittier than previous releases. The whole creative process took three long years, but the result has been worth the trouble."

Their songs are mostly about fun and good times, but occasionally – as in the case of 'Late Great USA' – they also stick the finger into an open wound. "Although Blaine's comical and satyrical themes mostly prevail on From Hell To Texas, there are two or three numbers which deal with more serious subjects. 'Late Great USA' is a political song, we simply had to vent our anger at certain grievances in this country."

For some big kid, AKA:  adult fun, check out Nashville Pussy's main site here for CD and tour info.    Also, check out our very own sister site, ChiILMama.com for loads of give aways, theatre and music reviews, upcoming events, live show videos and video band interviews.   We feature cool, family friendly fun and 17+ shows, too.   ChiIL out with ChiIL Mama (2 ii's and 1 L just like our favorite city & state).    Check out ChiIL Mama like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.

Photo Filled Recap: Carnivale Delirium at Reggie's Rock Club

Double click slide show for full screen and other options.

There was a fun bit of Steampunkery goin' down at Reggie's Rock Club Friday night, with the second annual Carnivale Delirium.   We enjoyed circus arts for the 17+ crowd including burlesque hooping, freak show tricks like the old nails up the nose bit, lifting heavy things with body parts, juggling, magic and acro.   We also enjoyed fun music from:

Vagabond Opera - Portland, OR
"Unbelievable vaudeville cabaret show and music!"

Veronique Chevalier - Los Angels, CA
"Master of Ceremonies and polka aficionado!"

The Dead Man's Carnival - Milwaukee, WI
"Circus sideshow and magic act!"

Eerie Twilight - Washington, DC
"Sensual steampunk burlesque!"

Candy Town - Chicago, IL
"The ultimate cabaret act!"

The White City Rippers featuring Lula Houp-Garou! - Chicago, IL
"Mechanical squeeze box and theremin band w live sideshow burlesque!"

with additional accompaniment by the...
Lords & Ladies DJs!
"Vaudevillian disc jockey extra-ordinaires!"

We particularly dug Vagabond Opera and The White City Rippers with their theremin!!   And of course, the crowd was full of characters and character.   We love an excuse to play dress up.

Raffle benefits and "Betty Page style retro calendar" sales benefited our friends over at GIRLS ROCK! CHICAGO.   Check out ChiIL Mama's own Sagezilla performing with Girls Rock! at The Metro in June.    Here's Octopie-her first band/first show ever, performing their original Sugarcubesesque punk song, Bloody Unicorn.

The World /Inferno Friendship Society-Reggie's Rock Club

I first happened upon The World /Inferno Friendship Society by chance, opening for Subhumans at Logan Auditorium years ago.   Since then, I've eagerly anticipated their shows, every time they come through town.  It's always a treat to see these Brooklyn natives live.   They're excellent musicians with a sense of humor and an avid following.   Their April 7th show at Reggies Rock Club in Chicago was once again a rockin' good time.

I always half way expect lead singer, Jack Terricloth, to break into the big shoe dance, with his Pee Wee Herman look.   But he's an icon in his own right, with a unique sound, and an adoring legion of fans.   Everyone's smiling when they play
old favorites like "Only Anarchists are Pretty", "Addicted to Bad Ideas" and "Me V. Angry Mob".   This time we also got a good taste of their new release, The Anarchy and the Ecstasy.

One of my favorite live show moments is the mosh waltz, where everyone is encouraged to partner up with lovers, friends or strangers and waltz.   However, it always turns into a magical, swirling cacophony of laughing punks, happily careening into and bouncing off one another.

They have a new CD out, and a sweet new sax player who claims to be from the Northeast side of Chicago.    Check out their music, touring schedule and What Would Jack Do section, full of brilliant ramblings and amusing musings.

Their new album just came out on March 15th on Chunksaah Records.

Reggies says:
The World / Inferno Friendship Society is one band that might actually be worthy of being called a "society." Consisting of 13 members, recruited from a dream list of "everyone who you never thought would make an album together" (the most peculiar listings from their resume include former members of Blues Traveler, Dexy's Midnight Runners and the NFL's Atlanta Falcons' Half Time Marching Band), the World / Inferno Friendship Society plays every instrument known to man, and has dabbled in every musical genre you could name on a bet. Now this Music Theory class on wheels graces us with a sound that is too out there to be everyday pop, rock, ska, dance, or salsa (even though it sounds like all these), but is too goofy to qualify as serious prog-rock.
