Review:
Hell in a Handbag Productions' latest is a revival of their 2013 hit L’IMITATION OF LIFE, a terrifically timely parody of the 1959 film Imitation of Life. This show is classic drag and high camp of the highest order, exploring race and class, mothers and daughters, and looking fabulous in your dead aunt of questionable fashion sense's size 22 wardrobe!

Handbag ensemble member Ed Jones* (Lana Turner) and Robert Williams (Annie Johnson) killed it as the classic movie diva and domestic duo. L'Imitation is full of amusing affectations, a script to die for, and talent to spare. Daughters Katherine Bellantone (Suzie Turner) and Ashley J. Hicks (Sara Jane Johnson) are also standouts in their Hell in a Handbag debut.

The parody goes far beyond the original movie, with witty wordplay galore on theatrical and movie titles. The backdrop screen work is a wonder, and too much fun, from the first rolling credits through the altered iconic photo shoots.

L’imitation-2 (left to right) Ed Jones and Katherine Bellantone in Hell in Handbag Productions’ revival of L’IMITATION OF LIFE. Photo by Rick Aguilar Studios.

L'imitation manages to hit on the cringeworthy themes of prejudice, pedophilia, homicidal children, closeted gay boy toys, self absorption, parental neglect, passing for white, racism, runaways in the sex industry, and even a racially motivated hate crime attack, with more than a measure of hilarity. This retro favorite is perfect fodder for a drag makeover and Handbag does it with panache!

Hell in a Handbag Productions is a true Chicago treasure and a fun favorite of ours here at ChiIL Live Shows. L'imitation of Life is highly recommended and now playing at Stage 773 through May 6th.

Hell in a Handbag Productions is pleased to kick off its 2018 Season with a revival of its 2013 hit L’IMITATION OF LIFE, a dead on parody of the 1959 film Imitation of Life about race, mothers and daughters – and looking fabulous! Adapted by Ricky Graham and Running with Scissors and directed by ensemble member Stevie Love*, L’IMITATION OF LIFE will play March 31 – May 6, 2018 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. Tickets are currently on sale at www.handbagproductions.org (through Stage 773) or by calling (773) 327-5252.

L’IMITATION OF LIFE features Handbag ensemble member Ed Jones* as Lana Turner with Robert Williams as Annie Johnson, two very different women raising their daughters in a world made for a man. Ensemble member Chazie Bly* plays Steve Martin, Lana’s hunky boy toy. New to Handbag are Katherine Bellantone, playing Suzie Turner and Ashley J. Hicks playing Sara Jane Johnson – the daughter that was “born to be hurt.” Allison Petrillo and Chase Wheaton-Werle round out the cast as various characters.

In this hilarious parody of the 1959 film Imitation of Life, Lana Turner is a determined white widow and single mother with aspirations of becoming a Broadway sensation. When Lana meets Annie Johnson, a struggling single African-American mother, the two team up and take on the world as Lana does “whatever it takes” to make it in show business – while Annie takes care of the homestead and raises both daughters.

The two women face insurmountable challenges led by their daughters. There's the blonde, perky and “so white it's frightening" Suzie, daughter of Lana Turner, and the raven-haired rebellious light-skinned beauty, Sara Jane, daughter of Annie. Sara Jane learns the hard truth about acceptance and the color of your skin – especially when she tries to “pass” as white.

The production team for L’IMITATION OF LIFE includes: Samantha Gribben (scenic design), Garry Nocco (costume design), Rachel Lake (lighting design), Sebby Woldt (sound design), Keith Ryan* (wig design), Sydney Genco* (make-up design), Adrian Hadlock* (props design), Lana Whittington (violence coordinator) and AJ Wright* (production manager).

REVIEW: Hey Mary! Christmas With Rudolph the Red Hosed Reindeer Through 12/30

Chi IL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Old School Drag Delight, 20th Season of Rudolph the Red Hosed Reindeer  Classic Camp

All Photos by Rick Aguilar Studios

Review:
Come out of the closet and into the attic, Hamburger Mary's attic that is. On opening night drag queens on roller skates were camping it up in the ground floor burger joint, while upstairs, a hilarious holiday musical tradition hit the double decades mark. It was a hoot to catch opening night as the audience was filled with Hell in a Handbag celebs and divas from their other hit shows. Everyone is welcome, gay... straight... non binary... crossdressing... LGBTQ... LPGA...

This parody of, you guessed it, the animated Rudolph Christmas classic is ripe for high camp and Hell in a Handbag kills it. I have friends that have come to this show annually for years, but I was a Mary's Attic virgin. The show was every bit as kitschy as I'd expected from King of Camp, David Cerda, and the upstairs bar had an impressive selection of drinks.

The script has been updated to lampoon current political figures and events (Melania's holiday twigs decor makes a cameo!) with Trump's over the top crazy front and center. Expect a jilted, alcohol soaked ex on the prowl, a slightly incestuous hybrid Ivana/Ivanka, and even Kellyanne "Conjob". I must know where Mrs. Claus gets her collection of holiday themed polyester babydoll dresses!

Of course, leave the littles home for this one unless you want them traumatized by santa in a g-string, drunken cougar ex Mrs. Claus, the abominable drag beast who abducts people and makes them listen to her sing, and other assorted sordid characters, but it's great fun for the 21+ set. We adored "Yukon Cornelia" (who claimed to be straight), crossdressing Rudolph (so adorable I want to adopt him and raise him as my own), gender fluid metal chick Clarice, Herbie the not gay enough elf, the "mean girls" elves, the island of misfit toys, and of course the hilarious snowman narrator.

Rudolph (Graham Thomas Heacock) upstaging the also adorable Herbie (Kristopher Bottrall)

Overall, the message is much like the original, it's OK to be different. Friends and allies can be found in unlikely places. And sometimes you have to run away before your family can appreciate the true you.

Back by Popular Demand!
Hell in a Handbag Productions Presents the Holiday Hit
RUDOLPH THE RED-HOSED REINDEER 2017
By David Cerda

November 25 – December 30, 2017 at Mary’s Attic

Hell in a Handbag Productions is pleased to conclude its 15th Anniversary Season with its most popular show ever: the holiday hit RUDOLPH THE RED-HOSED REINDEER 2017 by David Cerda*, co-directed by Becca Holloway and AJ Wright*. Handbag’s irreverent parody of the 1967 Rankin Bass children’s television special will play November 25 – December 30, 2017 at Mary’s Attic, 5400 N. Clark St. in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood. Tickets are on currently available at www.handbagproductions.org (through Brown Paper Tickets) or by calling (800) 838-3006.

RUDOLPH THE RED-HOSED REINDEER will feature Graham Thomas Heacock as Rudolph, Kristopher Bottrall* as Herbie, Allison Petrillo as Jane Donner, Chase Wheaton-Werle as Tom Donner, Michael Hampton as Santa, Tommy Bullington as Mrs. Claus, Sydney Genco* as Elfina, Colin Funk as Spike, Michael Rawls as Score, Josh Kemper as Coach Comet, Lori Lee* as Yukon Cornelia, Terry McCarthy* as Connie Blitzen, David Cerda* as Gladys Dasher, Christea Parent* as Clarice and Matthew Sergot as Sam the Snowman.

Chicago’s favorite cross-dressing reindeer is back and he’s 20 years old! RUDOLPH THE RED-HOSED REINDEER had its first reading in 1996 and has evolved into one of Chicago’s most popular anti-holiday, holiday shows. Join Rudolph and all of his misfit friends as they struggle with fitting in and being ‘normal’ in an increasingly abnormal world. Playwright David Cerda* always adjusts the show to fit the current social climate.

Hell in a Handbag Productions is pleased to continue its 15th Anniversary Season with the world premiere of BEWILDERED, a musical parody of the classic TV sitcom Bewitched, told from the perspective of Gladys Kravitz, Samantha Stephens’ iconic nosy neighbor. Featuring a book by Ron Weaver, music and lyrics by Aaron Benham and Ron Weaver and direction and choreography by Brigitte Ditmars, BEWILDERED will play September 27 – November 11, 2017 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago.

Tickets are currently available at www.handbagproductions.org and stage773.com, by calling (773) 327-5252 or in person at the Stage 773 box office.

A parody and reimagining of the beloved ‘60s/‘70s television sitcom Bewitched, this spellbinding throwback is told from the point of view of Gladys Kravitz, the poor, misunderstood neighbor who keeps seeing crazy things at the home of Samantha Stephens, a beautiful witch, and her ‘ordinary family.’ Gladys’ husband Abner has had enough and is about to take drastic measures. Can Gladys prove her visions are real without destroying the Stephens family – or is she doomed to a life of pills and institutions? Gladys finally gets her due in this fun and magical musical parody.

BEWILDERED features ensemble members David Cerda as Endora, Caitlin Jackson as Gladys Kravitz, Ed Jones as Uncle Arthur, Michael S. Miller as Mr. Tumer and AJ Wright as Darrin G. The production also features Steve Kimbrough as Larry Tate, Matt Miles as Abner, Elizabeth Morgan as Samantha, Scott Sawa as Darrin S. and Robert Williams as Tabitha/Louise. Rounding out the cast are Kira Gaudynski, Jennifer Ledesma, Travis Monroe Neese and Sarah Taylor as Magic Stage Hands.

The production team for BEWILDERED includes: Roger Wykes (scenic design), Rachel Sypniewski (costume design), Cat Wilson (lighting design), Sydney Genco (make-up design), Mealah Heidenreich (props design) Becca Holloway (assistant director) and Keith Ryan (wig design).
